As the older/younger sibling in your own family, do you find yourself identifying more with the older/younger sister of the Summers family - Buffy/Dawn?

(As in, if you're the younger sibling in your family do you identify more with Dawn? (or the other way around) Do you understand more Dawn's anger toward her older sister, or find the little sister - Dawn more annoying because in your own life your younger sibling/s is/are annoying to you?)

Hope the question was clear enough 😛

I'm the youngest in my family, with an older brother and sister. And I still find Dawn annoying in general or am just apathetic toward her, even though I'm closer to her age than Buffy's. The only time I really liked Dawn was in her first episode. I thought her character traits and relationships with other characters were fascinating, and that her diary entry was pretty endearing. But they trashed some of her personality established in "Real Me", like her playing chess or liking school. I thought those little characteristics made her more real and likeable, but they disregarded that in later episodes, and turned her into a regular, overly whiny teen.

I'm the middle child so I can see both perspectives. I still think Dawn was whiny and needy though and identify with Buffy more.

I'm the oldest... and I think that probably did factor into my "I hate Dawn" stance when I first watched. Since then though... I've fallen for Dawn a little bit. I still hate her in season 6. And that might have to do with the fact that I'm the oldest... but I think it has more to do with the fact she's written as an 8 year old in season 6.

I'm the eldest, but Dawn has never particularly bugged me, I was always able to see reasons for how she acted like she did, and I have always been able to see why Buffy acted how she did, so I've always remained fairly balanced about it.

I am the youngest in my family, I have an older sister (and 2 brothers), and I think that is why I don't hate Dawn and I actually really feel for her sometimes

Ha, I love this question. My older sister and I are so totally Buffy and Dawn (not that she knows it!). As a character I prefer Buffy and I understand both of them, but I relate to Dawn far, far more. Even when she's so annoying that I don't even want her on the screen, I relate to her more.

Dawn/Buffy reminds me so much of me and my older sister. I know I used to be the annoying younger brother, and my sister was the rude older sister. I used to think my sister's friends were my friends too, and whenever they'd be over I'd try to hang out with them too. 😛

I'm the oldest and I identify with both Summers siblings at different times. Both Dawn and Buffy are in my top 5 favourite Buffy/Angel characters [Buffy, Fred, Dawn, Anya, Drusilla] and although I understand why some dislike Dawn, I don't hate her and never could.

In a sibling sense I don't really identify with either of them. I am older, but I just have a younger brother and we always got along. I really dislike Dawn and love Buffy, and my personality is much more like Buffy's.

I am the younger of two but I don't relate at all to Dawn and I can't see comparing my brother to Buffy. Our sibling relationship was very different than Buffy and Dawn's.

Middle child. How it has had any effect on me liking/defending Dawn even if she can be annoying I don't know. The middle child are supposed to be the "forgotten" sibling and I guess that relates to Dawn. Or at least how she feel.

Everything that's happened in my life has made me become the person I am today and how I feel about things. If anyone want to make my position in the family a statistic in who likes Dawn or not they are free to do so.

Being protective of a younger sibling can't be uncommon and maybe since my sister is handicapped/disabled those feelings are even stronger. Add to that the extra help she needed took even more time away from my "parent time" that might increase the "being ignored/ no one care" sympathy for Dawn.

I definitely love both my sisters and I'm thankful for my parents so the above isn't a complaint, just how it were. Even if I in my younger years probably could be jealous of the attention. Nowadays I hate being the center of attention.

I'm glad for kittenpoker's post above, makes me feels less odd... as I'm the older sibling, but I still relate much more to Dawn than to Buffy. (Enough so that I may be the only person in a lightyear radius who never minded the "get out get out get out"...).

On the other hand, in another Whedon show... Simon and River very much resonate with me as to me and my sis, in the "expected" roles. (And that's even stronger a resonance when you add Shempy as Kaylee into the equation... 🙂)

I also was never bothered by the "GetOutGetOutGetOut"! In fact, when I first got here, I was confused about why people were referencing it all the time, haha.

I can make anyone feel less odd. :-) and I dont' mind the "get out" either
It made me get Dawn even less. I'm the youngest sister, but my sister is 7 yrs older. We had a fairly tough life, so that really made us close in many ways. She did so much for me, but was also scary as hell 😛 Speaking of...if I screeched like Dawn did, I would get smacked, seriously. OR at least just the threat of, which was completely enough incentive to not be like that, even at 7 or 8...so at, what, 14 or 15?, doing that is not something I can even conceive of. But, hey...there's the silver lining in poverty, right? If you have to move around enough 'cause you can't afford to pay the rent, and sometimes don't even have food for dinner, you become significantly more mature and less whiney. (This is why I fell for Supernatural...their depiction of Sam and Dean is completely my sister and me.)

I have an older sister and I love Dawn and totally understood/understand where she's coming from.

Hope that answers your question 😉

I'm the younger in the family, but I don't think I identified with Dawn.

In fact, I didn't like her behaviour and I thought she was childish and rude and whiny. But all teenagers are like that. I can't stand that kind of behaviour, and I've barely become an adult. I cringe knowing I was a bit like that. But certainly some of Dawn's situation is familiar, like for example thinking that your older sibling is more respected and listened to.
