How good is BtVS post Angel and Cordelia?

So i'm watching the show for the first time and I know that Angel and Cordelia leave the show after season 3 to be on "Angel", even though I try my hardest to stay away from spoilers lol.

I'm currently watch season 3 (about half way done) and i'm amazed how good the season is and how much Angel and Cordelia have grown since season one.There is such an interesting dynamic between Cordelia/Xander/Willow/Oz and Angel/Buffy/Giles that I don't want it to end.

Do the later seasons introduce characters as interesting as Cordelia and Angel? And do the characters have the same interesting dynamic?
 
You'll get differing answers I expect, some people dislike the last few seasons, some people love them.

I personally love them and think that yes, there are interesting and fun characters. The dynamic is constantly changing and evolving. I don't want to say more for fear of spoiling you, but all I can say is keep watching - and hopefully you'll continue to love the show.

The later seasons are what make the show the show for me, but I know several people who'd disagree.

I love BtVS to death, but I definitely favor the first three seasons. It just all depends on you.

However, I think it's going to be really hard not to get spoiled on this board! Try to be careful! BtVS has a lot of twists and turns and it sucks when you can't be surprised about them while first watching 🙂
 
The show is still good.. of course, if you like Angel and Cordelia in BtVS, you'll miss them in the begining, but later on you'll get over it. Sure, there will be some boring episodes, and episodes you won't like, but in overall, the show is still awesome 😉
 
To be honest, I didn't think Angel was that great in BtVS, and he's much better on his own show(he's three dimensional there). As for Cordy, she's funny, but again I thought she was much better on AtS. So when you ask if they'll replace them with good characters... Yes they will, and for me these characters will be more interesting than Cordy/Angel were in BtVS. 😛
 
I think the show is great past the first three seasons and I only watched Buffy at first for Cordy and Angel. You should watch the later seasons and see if you like it.

As for the first question, yes, there are more characters introduced after Season 3.

Angel gets about ten thousand times for interesting on his own show. Cordelia, too. She really grows up and becomes a very admirable character. I can't say anything else without revealing spoilers.

And don't worry about the show going downhill after Cordy and Angel leave. The show only gets better in my opinion. Season 6 is my favorite season.
 
and of course you can watch Angel season 1 while you are watching Buffy Season 4 and not miss anyone 🙂
 
Personally, I think the show was at its best in season 1-3. There's a lot about 4-7 that I find hard to watch, let alone enjoy and I certainly don't care about the characters in the same way.

In saying that, there is a lot to love in the latter seasons. I definitely wouldn't not watch 4-7 in fear of not liking it as much.
 
The show is still worth watching....I loved Cordy, but it was better off going this route....I wouldn't take it back because you want some change in your show to keep it fresh...I prefer Angel and Cordy getting their own show and having Buffy get newer characters....at first I didn't like it either but once you start watching you will appreciate it.
 
This is some awesome feedback, I still plan on finishing the show though. I can tell from the comments that season 4 is onward is mixed and is going to take some getting used to with all the changes, but i'll watch and make my own opinion on that

Totally agree with this. ATS s1/BTVS s4 is the year that has the most crossovers, and I got the most out of them by watching them in the order they were aired. And I agree with everybody else (except Icarium LOL) that you will probably enjoy the new characters as well (& old characters that get more airtime). Two names in particular that make the rest of the series worth it: Spike and Anya.

The show changes some, but the new characters they introduce are great. I don't think Angel and Cordy moving over to Angel was a bad move at all....now you have two awesome shows to watch. 😀

Depends who you ask. I don't really have a preference, since there are good storylines and episodes all over the place, but the changes post-season 3 can be pretty polarizing. I think you'll find that the people who have a very strong preference for the earlier seasons tend to be big fans of Buffy/Angel or Willow/Oz, so if you don't have a specific romance you're really into you'll probably like the later seasons.

As for your question about new characters, yes, there are plenty of new characters who join in and fill the void that Angel and Cordelia left behind. I actually think that the group dynamic gets even more interesting after high school because that's when everyone really starts to develop.
 
Angel gets LEAPS AND BOUNDS more interesting on his own television show. Colour is added (Figuratively speaking, of course) to his character, we get to know him better; He's no longer defined by Buffy. Buffy is much the same. When they remove Angel from the equation, she gets much more likeable, in my opinion. Their worlds are no longer centered around one another, and, consequently, both characters REALLY are able to grow up.

As for Cordy, I liked her on both shows; It is true though that she gets much, much deeper going over to Angel than she ever did on Buffy. Which is fine, because in the end, BtVS season 1-3 were set in high school, and not every single character can be expected to have that extreme depth in HS. It just doesn't happen.

I really don't think the show lacks without them, but rather, grows. When they leave, we understand, that entering season four, they weren't in High School anymore, they are forced to start growing up. Keeping Angel and Cordelia around would have only hindered that message of growing up, I think.

Seasons 4-7 of Buffy were still fantastic, in my opinion. They had some less than stellar episodes in EVERY season, including the beloved 1-3, but it's still Buffy. Even Buffy on a bad day is better than most television shows on a GREAT day. I still think you'll like it in the later seasons.

Angel is a fantastic show, really. It isn't at all a rehash of what we've seen on BtVS. Both shows are their own, yet they still complement each other quite nicely, if you so choose to watch both. Also, at the end of the day, you have TWO Buffyverse shows to enjoy, and what could be better than that?
 
The show's still great, plus if you watch Angel then you still get your fix of Angel and Cordelia and they actually become better characters.

The solid base of Buffy, Xander, Willow and Giles is still there, i'm confident you'll love the seasons and to be honest i am envious of your position having not seen what is to come. 😀
 
The show stays very strong in seasons 4 and 5, in my opinion - some may say that S4 is a drop in quality but I think it's underrated. We may lost Cordelia and Angel, but their replacements are great - two old faces you will recognise - Anya and Spike. Spike is of course great as always, and Anya is brilliant, she gets a lot of character development.

As for new characters... opinions towards them are mixed. Pretty much everybody adores Tara, but Dawn and Riley tend to attract a lot of hate.

As for S6 and 7... you can ask a lot of people and will get a lot of differing opinions, but in my opinion they are an insult to the show, the characters, and television itself. Stop with "The Gift" (S5 finale) - it was the perfect way to end the show and should have been the end.

I don't know... (slight S4+ and AtS spoilers below)

...my favourite relationships - Cordelia/Angel, Wesley/Lilah, Anya/Xander, Willow/Tara - were all from the later seasons of the show or AtS, but I am much more a fan of the high school years.
 
I respect what "the Void" said but i'd urge you to watch season 6 and 7. You may share the same views as "the Void" after you've seen them but i'm pretty certain you'll find elements in both seasons that you will enjoy.

Personally i think season 6 is probably the weakest season but at the end of the day it is still Buffy and i throughly enjoyed it.

As for season 7 i think it is underated. There are some cracking episodes in that season.
