I was just watching BtVS Season 3 'Lover's Walk' and noticed that Buffy implies Spike isn't exactly famous for keeping his word. That got me to thinking, when has he actually broken his word?

In the episode with (billy?) Fordam and the Vampire cult, Buffy escapes and locks Ford down there with the vampires. She clearly expects him to be dead when she gets back, and so does the audience. Ford says to Spike something like 'I did my part, now you said you'd make me a vampire' and from the expression on Spike's face, you're sure Ford is soon to be just a meal. However, at the end of the episode it is made clear that Ford becomes a vampire, and Spike kept his word.

Also Spike gives the money he promised to that snitch who brought him Angel in Season 2 (the episode when Kendra arrives). He clearly could have just killed the snitch, but he actually pays.

Another example, Spike leaves town after getting Dru back in the last episode of season 2 - just as he promised.

Another example: Spike tells Buffy in the Gift that he'll protect Dawn, and not only does he attempt to do so in The Gift, he continues doing so Fanatically until Buffy returns from the dead.

I keep thinking on it, and I can't actually recall an instance when he broke his word. Can anyone else? I mean, I know there has been times he swore to do something and failed (eg: I will kill the Slayer), but I don't think that fully counts as breaking your word.

lol ... I don't think counts as breaking your word either!

I guess your right, can't remember him breaking his word, but

Spike leaves town after getting Dru back in the last episode of season 2 - just as he promised.

Wasn't he supossed to stay out of town and if so that could be why Buffy said he didn't keep his word in Lovers Walk, the ep in which he returned!

What do you gotta like Make it Perfect?hehehe

I think Spike has never broken his word, not that i remember.

Well if he didnt come back than there would be no spike now.

He has broken his word in Tabula Rasa, he said he was going to pay his kittens (that he owed) to the shark dude and he never did.....lol so he broke his word.

fit or what!!??!!

so what if he don't keep hiss word his a reallly fit/hot hunni and if hes honest thats a plus but if not who cares

he actually did pay the kittens to the shark.

he just didn't do it on camera

he could have killed that shark at the end of the episode, yet he kept him alive with the promise to pay him.

Spike doesn't lie

lying doesn't take an edge.

but keeping your word even to your enemies even when you don't have to does take an edge.

Spike could eviscerate you in no time flat, so sod off.

okay, not lie, but more like he does have certain amount of honour to keep his word or something...i don't know, i give up, i can't get the thoughts onto writing (hence writer's block, hehe)

oh well. I salute you on having an opinion.

Spike does have honour. Yeah. There is a thing as evil honour, though. It just makes him better. He isn't a coward or a git.

Ok OK........Sorry mabie he did keep his word on the kittens. I dont know anything else that he lied about........I think hes pretty honest.

Dru

I don't think Spike has ever broke his word. He's hot, he's honest, he fit, he's perfect!

Spike's a good guy inside. Maybe some of us just see it that way because we all relate better to different characters. For instance, my buddy relates better to the Agel personality making it easier for her to see things the Angel way and I relate more to the way Spike is so I can understand his character better than Angel. There are great things about both but I can not think of one time Spike didn't keep his word and I think it's things like that that speak volumes for his character. It's a very nobel quality that not many people posess. None that I know anyway...

The only time Spike broke his word was when he came back in season 3, coz in season 2 he promised Buffy he'd take Dru and she'd never see him again. I think that's what Buffy means about Spike not keeping his promises.

Well I guess deep down Spike is a good guy! Althogh in that same episode when buffy said "he probely just locked them in a factory" and Spike was like "How stupiddo you think I am?" he was kinda lying there.....

Well, he kept that promise as long as his relationship with Dru lasted. I guess he thought there was no breach of honour when he came back after their break up.
After all, he came to Sunnydale to be with Buffy, to be hers. And he never broke his word to her again.
He protected Dawn and Buffy till the end of the world (his own death) sacrificing himself in the name of love to save the world.

Spike really is an honorable victorian gentleman at heart and I just wish there were more like him out there !

YES! YES! YES! So true!

About the Spike coming back to town after Dru dumped him:

Yes Spike said that he and Dru would never come back to sunnydale(so Buffy wouldnt kill Drusilla in the fight at the Mansion) and he did brake his word then when he came back in S3, but he came back to find a love potion or something so he could get Drusilla back.

He constently lied in S4 to get his chip out by Adam.

S5 he didnt really lie about anything, not that I can remember, except when Dru came to town and he tried to get Buffy to love him.

Like Magui stated for S6, but thats the only thing I can remember for that season.

Season7 I cant remember him lieing about anything.
