How I Found Serenity

So way back in college (never mind how long ago exactly...no, seriously, don't ask) my tech director suggested I watch Firefly, since he knew I liked Buffy. I gave him the vague "Oh, yeah sure, I'll get right on that."

But having recently survived Buffy season 7, I didn't really want to see anymore of Nathan Fillion (you know he's good at his job when his character of Caleb made me really hate the site of him) so I didn't watch Firefly.

For four years.

Until this March when my sister came into town for her spring break and handed me the Firefly DVDs and said, "Ok, sit here. Put this in. Watch. No! No iPad! WATCH."

Two episodes in, I wondered what the heck had taken me this long to watch it.

It took me forver to finally bring myself to watch the show. I had always heard about it and how brilliant it was, but I kind of had this thing where I'm like, every movie or show set in space that's not Star Wars is crap.
Well, about one year ago, I thought, what the hell, and just bought the DVDs. I've watched the complete show five times since then.

I've already seen it twice through. And each time I watch it, how I wish there were more!! And how I wish the network had aired the pilot FIRST. I can't imagine watching it starting with episode 2.

Took me a long time before I watched firefly. I saw some cover photos of it and it just looked so doll to me. I did not like the beige cowboy space theme. But when I friend almost forced me to watch it. I got hooked.

As always when its from joss whedon. The characters are amazing. And thats what I love about tv shows.

I also learned to love the world the show takes place in.

Like a lot of others, "Firefly" was never something that I ever bothered with when it was in its first run. In fact, I never watched the series until AFTER I saw "Serenity," and for that matter, I wouldn't have watched "Serenity" except that some friends wanted to go out to a movie, and it was the only one showing that none of us had seen. I ordered the series on disc from Amazon as soon as I got home that evening. I'm a trekker from way back, and this is the only scifi series that I have found, to this day, that has ever came close to matching Roddenberry's original dream of "Wagon Train To The Stars."

I have often regretted the fact that there was never two, three, or more seasons of "Firefly," but, at the same time, I've always felt grateful that the few episodes that were made were all top quality, solid gold, with never a "pot boiler" in the bunch. None of the cast seemed to ever get tired of their roles or become jealous that someone else was getting better lines or more screen time. They were a family, they loved what they were doing, they took pride in their finished product, and it shows.

I found Firefly in 2005 after my first Dragon* Con trip. I had heard of the show, but never saw it because of that Friday night deathslot. At Con 2005 Firefly stuff was all over the place to promote Serenity, which was coming out in a few months. My friends were all raving about it so I picked up the DVDs and have been a brown coat ever since.
