Hilary Duff is set to star in Hulu’s How I Met Your Father, a sequel series to How I Met Your Mother. Variety reports that the show will follow Sophie, played by Duff, as she tells “her son the story of how she met his father: a story that catapults us back to the year 2021 where Sophie and her close-knit group of friends are in the midst of figuring out who they are, what they want out of life, and how to fall in love in the age of dating apps and limitless options.” How I Met Your Father will be overseen by This Is Us co-showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, while How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas are onboard as executive producers. It’s unclear whether any of the How I Met Your Mother actors will appear in the spinoff.

The father will die prematurely so that female Ted can hook up with the guy the audience meets in the first episode who was some sort of "uncle" to the kid.

No doubt it will be set against the backdrop of the shit show America currently finds itself in.

Spoiler Alert: the father was just a sperm donor and mother is actually a lesbian!

That is probably the actual outcome or, given that the main action starts in 2021, they'll have the father be black and there will be an "interaction" with the police that doesn't end well for him and so the crux of it will be female Ted overcoming her grief and wanting to start a new relationship.

So, this will be a 30 min sitcom like HIMYM? Hmm, I'd prefer it to be an hour dramedy. I still want Hilary Duff as a grown up Lizzie McGuire! I did like How I Met Your Mother (last couple of seasons notwithstanding) and I do like Hilary Duff, so I'll give this a watch. But I don't want it to be just a female version of HIMYM.

I wonder how much, if at all, Bays & Thomas will be involved in the series. I'll probably still give it a go.

Definitely feel you on this hour long dramedy format! Hulu doesn’t do big episode counts per season, so hour long would be better than half hour sitcom!
