How Important was it to have Cordelia and Wesley in the "Not Fade Away"?

I personally loved "Not Fade Away", but whenever I think of the people standing in the alley at the end of the episode it always hurts my heart because Cordelia and Wesley were incredibly important to the show. I always hoped for that last scene to have the characters that made the show so great, Angel, Wesley, Cordelia, Gunn, Lorne, and Illyria/Fred to be standing side by side against impossible odds (I wouldn't be too upset if Spike wasn't there).

I think Wesley's death was very moving, and that Cordelia's good bye episode was perfect, so I didn't think it was that bad that they weren't there. Could be because I don't like the episode in general...

I don't think it was important to have them there. I was fine with Cordelia dying half way through season 5, but it did feel a little odd that Wes died. I think it would have suited the scene more if Gunn died instead.

Though then we wouldn't have had the great scene with Fred and Wes as he laid on the ground bleeding out.

I thought they both had perfect endings. Cordy's finale episode in "Your welcome" was such a perfect way to say goodbye to her (the final Cangel scene was so good), and I wouldn't change a single thing about Wesley's death. I don't think I could come up with a better ending for him if I tried.

I always, always wanted an ending with Buffy and Angel in Not Fade Away, even it was just a shot of Angel holding the ring he and Buffy exchanged or him calling her and getting an answering machine.

I think that it adds a certain amount of reality to the episode that at least one of the principal members of the team die, and Wes actually was the logical one. He had been very little more than a shell since Fred was consumed by Illyria, and I honestly think that he welcomed his fate. The final scene with "Fred" promising him that they would, at last, be together and happy was both heart breaking and beautiful, as well as the perfect closure to their short lived relationship. Was it a total lie? Was Fred's soul actually consumed, thereby making that final promise merely part of the lie that Wes requested? In that moment, it just plain didn't matter.

As @whiteavenger said, it added a lot of reality to the episode, the chances of all them making it as far as they did was at best probably one in few million lol. In a way it also brought a bit of closure to Wes & Fred (even though it was Illyria) but it was a moving scene,and it wouldn't have been the same if that scene had been different imo.

You can probably tell they were mixed between having Gunn dead/alive by the time they got to the alley together,the fact that he was mortally wounded before the fight had even begun as such probably goes to show they were happy enough to have Angel/Spike/Illyria as the final 3.

Wes' death was perfect, heartwrenching, and totally unexpected. I bawled. It wouldn't have been near as emotional without that scene, and nowhere near as perfect. Cordy was already dead (and again, her death was perfect as is. I wouldn't muck it up). It's been awhile since I've seen the ep, but the most I would like to see Cordy in it is Angel looking at her pic at some time or somthing similar (I don't think he does this) just as a nod to her character.

Since neither were in the final scene, and both had excellent departures from the show in the way they were written and the emotions they conveyed, I'd say it's pretty non-important for them to be in that final scene.

Well, it would have been awesome to see some sort of reflection of their faces there in the mist of the rain or something, but I agree that their deaths were definitely heavy, emotional moments in the show. Their absence in that scene just adds to the weight of their deaths to me; the fact that they're not there is sad and makes me miss them even more.

I understand what you're saying, and I feel the same way about the missing person in the finale of BtVS, not standing with the rest of the group outside the bus.

That said, though, I would not change a thing. NFA was perfect in every way.

It would have been supremely awesome to have cordy there... but I was ok with Wesley not being there, he had a great death scene.
