I have been going through some very tough times right now and I can honestly say that one of the things that puts me at peace is watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I know that sounds corny and all. I just think Buffy is such a wonderful role model out there for people. She is strong, independent, witty, and so many other awesome qualities. She faces so many difficult situations and fights so many different kinds of demons but I think the ultimate wonder is watching her fight her own personal demons.
This show has been such an outlet for me. I am so happy and thankful I have this show to turn to while I am fighting my own personal demons. Buffy is my hero.
I was just wondering How is Buffy you're guys' hero?? I find this to be an interesting topic and would love to hear your thoughts and opinions. Thanks 🙂

not Korny at all. I totally get it. For me what Giles and Dawn say in season 5 spiral pretty well sums it up for me ;)

Of course that´s not corny. Buffy have helped loads of people that have felt the same way you did. And it sure has helped me with my mood many times. *hugs*

Hey hun 🙂
It's actually 'your' (possesive) You're would be 'You Are'

Anywho...

Thanks for sharing. I too was going through a pretty hard time around the same time I discovered Buffy. I hadn't gotten this job I really wanted, and I had just broken up with my longtime boyfriend, and was really anti-social and depessed, drinking alot....
and coming home after work at the end of the day and watching Buffy was really the highlight of my day. I could totally lose myself in that universe. I still do that now. Whenever I'm stressed, or need a study break, I watch one of my favorite episodes.

That's what fiction does. It soothes, and entertains, and can also enlighten. 🙂 We grow to love the characters we follow. That is the power of fiction. Buffy is truly a work of art, my friend.

How is Buffy my hero? I think what mostly drew me to her in the first place was her humility. She is just an 'ordinary' girl thrown into (by 'fate') an extordinary situation. She always tries to do the right thing. As a result of the power she is given, she matures and in time becomes an excellent role model. She is strong, and doesn't need anyone to take care of her. 🙂

If I had a daugher I'd name her Buffy. And when she asked who Buffy was, I'd tell her that Buffy was the best character in all of fiction.

Hope you're feeling better soon 🙂

This past year had been really, really tough for me...and the #1 thing to distract me and make me feel better was watching Buffy. My friend sent me Season Three on a whim after I mentioned I used to watch it as a kid, and from there I bought all the other seasons, and honestly, it feels like it saved my life. I know that sounds melodramatic. But it's amazing how much this show helped.

She's my hero because she always fights her demons. That's something to be admired.

It's weird, because soo many people can relate to your post. Buffy just helps in that way, I suppose.

I absolutely know how you feel.🙂 I bought my cousin Buffy S3 as well for Christmas...maybe she will get really into it! I hope.

There is NOTHING that will bring me out of a crappy mood or take my mind off things like BTVS. It's completely therapeutic. No other show can do that for me.

Simply put: Buffy is determined to do the right thing no matter what. Even if does mean sacrificing some things that are important to her. Be it her social standing - or her lover to save the world. It's that basic ideal to Buffy that has her be a tremendously inspiring character. Yes, she herself is flawed and makes mistakes, but she always manages to somehow persevere and pull through.

High school was really tough on me. I was a lot like Willow- content to be in the background, madly in love with a guy who didn't love me back, kinda socially backwards when it came to guys... When I found Buffy, it was kind of like an escape of my reality into theirs. I looked forward to one night a week when I could get into the story and not think about the crappy stuff going on in my life or what a spaz I was. I related to Willow a lot and I kept watching to see if things would work out for her... I thought the character of Buffy was SUPER cool, and wished I could be like her. Xander was, in just about every aspect, my best friend Kyle... It was kind of like watching my life, if vampires and demons were thrown in! LOL

Wow, I totally echo this! I've been a mess, and then BTVS came into my life. Never watched an episode 6 months ago...now I own the entire series and am totally obsessed. At first it was just fun, but now it's become really theraputic, because the characters go through things that I can relate to. I grow along with them.

I've been telling people how the show is therapy for me, and have felt a bit silly saying so, but this thread is making me feel better!

I like that the characters are not "perfect" heroes, and their problems are not solved in 48 minutes or less, they don't go to bed with a clean slate, they muddle through, just like us.

And some issues in my life that I've never really seen dealt with on other shows, are dealt with either literally or metaphorically on Buffy.

Now, I think the OP was asking how Buffy herself is my hero. And Up until S4 I don't think I really related to her often, but that has changed.

I relate to the way she does what needs to be done, no matter how hard, daunting, emotionally painful, etc it is. She does what no one else will or can. I play that role in my family and among my friends often.

I like how she's human and superhuman at the same time.

To keep fighting. No matter how dark and bad it seems if you keep on fighting you'll find what you were looking for.

Buffy isn't my Hero , I would say Xander is , or even Giles/Wes.

But watching the show Buffy makes me feel full of pride that some of her decisions in life , and as a slayer have and would have been mine also. Sacrifice is a massive thing to do for mankind and for yourself. Buffy does it everytime for all of us risking her neck for a birthrite , it seems she cares about everyone of us and is almost sad that she cannot be apart of this world but dwells in death and darkness. It seems infair but she is a Hero, a Warrior of the night. Without her the show with not exist.

LMAO@your siggy!! Hilarious!
Buffy has been my hero since the show first aired. I have been thinking about what to say in this thread, how to express my feelings without sounding corny, and without sounding like everyone that has spoken about this subject before. So I'm just going to point out a few ways that Buffy is my hero.

1.) She is beautiful. Not everyone thinks SMG is the most beautiful person in Hollywood, but there's something about Buffy and the way SMG plays her, especially in the earlier seasons that I really liked. Her hair, makeup and fashion all just seemed to draw me towards Buffy as a young teenager and pre-teen. All this may sound shallow, but hey - I take pride in the way I look and this was one of the first times I really started copy-catting fashion trends.

2.) She befriended the outcasts while still herself being popular material. Buffy had the chance to be a cordette, but instead she chooses to hang out with Xander and Willow. This might sound silly, but for me this was a big deal. When I was in high school and 15 I also made the decision to leave the popular crew of girls behind and start hanging out with the smart kids, or sometimes just spending my lunch times alone reading a book. Doing this is NOT easy at that age, but Buffy gave me strength to do this. She didn't care what people thought of her to much, as long as she was happy.

3.) Buffy is strong. Really strong. And some more shallow-ness is going to come to surface here before I get to deep. I love that Buffy is such a kick arse fighter, I always wanted to be able to fight like that, I guess it probably comes from going to a slightly rough high school. I just always wanted to be able to be that physically strong. Then not only is she physically strong, but she's emotionally strong. I watched Buffy go through so many tough things that hadn't happened to me yet, and saw her come out the other end okay. Knowing that Buffy, who was once just a ditzy cheerleader can cope with such a wide variety of problems and life issues has always given me the knowledge that I can work through things as well.

4.) She keeps trying. She never gives up. I guess this is similar to emotional strength, but I'm referring more towards everyday activities here, like getting Owen to go on a date with her, or convincing her mum to let her drive. I love her perseverance.

There's a lot more to be said, but I don't really know how to. So I'll leave this here.
