I don't know much about computers and just replace them when they start to run too slowly. I am on my 3rd laptop in 10 years and this one is just starting to piss me off enough to think of replacing it. How long do your electronic toys last you?

I've had this laptop for 6 years. Use it everyday & for work.
 
If the speed has decreased you probably have a virus. Use CryptoPrevent for ransomware protection and I have found Windows Defender to be adequate for everything else. You may also have registry issues which you can fix with programs like C Cleaner. I am running a Dell Inspiron that started with Windows 7 but I upgraded to Windows 10 and I use Edge as a browser but if I want to copy pictures from somewhere, I use Internet Explorer 10. I have used this laptop for over 6 years and used free spyware / malware / ransomware defense programs but except for CryptoPrevent, all functions seem to be protected by Windows Defender. C Cleaner used to be more informative than the current version but it still works. Run an anti-virus and your speed may return.

Depends on what issues the laptop might have, but they should last for up to 10 years, in my personal experience.

I have always paid for the antivirus software, it says its all up to date and no virus detected but I bet its lying to me. It usually slows down after updates. I'll wait til my brain comes back after this migrane and fiddle with it again. I dont really want to buy another one, especially if they are supposed to last longer!
 
Mine have lasted about three years each...they may have lasted a lot longer if I had treated them better. Or only used them on a table, rather than my bed or lap. They got dropped quite a bit. I've also found that spilling Pepsi on the keyboard really shortened their lives. 😂 I'm not getting another one for awhile, it's just not a priority right now.
 
Yeah, bunny hair probably doesn't help the poor little motor thing lol. My last one had buttons falling off, but I really thought I had cared for this one, so I am disappointed its dying already.

Rarely dropped, but often knocked. It has a little fan thingo it sits on and that falls over at least 3 times a week. Its also running netflix almost daily.

Actually, come to think of it, the demon rabbit did use this laptop as a bunny heating bed when I first moved here. Its much colder than the city and she thought it was a wonderful place to lay while licking the touchpad bit. I think it must have tingled 😛
 
Yes, "knocked" is a better description. I'd have it on the bed, get distracted, then suddenly, boom! Oops. And yes, I'd nearly forgotten all the missing keys.
 
I'd suggest Kaspersky for anti-virus/internet security. Can get it pretty cheap on Amazon. 🙂
 
At the moment, I'm using a Lenovo Thinkpad T400. Thinkpads are built like tanks, and I can buy one on Ebay very cheaply. Whenever the current one starts giving too much trouble, I just buy a nes "carcass" on Ebay (no hard drive, no battery, no charger) and put my hard drive and battery into it, and I'm back in business. They are usually available for $20 to $50 dollars, and last for at least a couple of years. I currently have one primary laptop and a second as backup.
 
I have trend micro maximum security installed. I think it was the suggested prog when I brought the lappy. It seems to be good for the phone, but possibly not for the laptop if it is a virus killing it!

I clicked the optimisation thingo and its defintely moving faster. Some days part of the problem could be the touchpad. I have a mouse but I dropped it in a foot soak and I havent tested it since its rice bath. Might help lol.

@white avenger mine is a lenovo too and I love it more than the hp previously. Im going to keep your method in mind.

The longevity of your laptop depends on what you are using it for. If you use it for new video games for instance then at some point the components of your laptop (e.g. the graphics card) will eventually no longer be capable of running them. However, if you take good care of your laptop and you only use it for less intensive needs than there is no reason it can't last many years, provided you have effective anti-virus/malware/spyware software. You can also upgrade individual components to extend the life of your laptop, although this isn't really viable or feasible with apple products.
 
Suggest you use floatation devices on it and gently push it on a lake. It might well last for years as most fish don't know how to write American.

Its defo a hardware issue 🙁 No virus, the internet runs fine, it is the actual computer parts that are taking too long to think. The keyboard has a HUGE lag, like it is not even connected to the monitor sometimes. The poor little lap top is even making dying noises when the room gets warm BOOO! I am going to have to replace this 🙁

I had a look at officeworks and I could afford to downgrade to a smaller screen and keyboard. Buying online is usually more expensive for where I live and risky for a knobhead like me. Maybe I could ask my Christmas obsessed family to chip in for a new one. It will be a heck of a lot more handy than any of the other crap they spend hundreds of dollars on for their own benefit.
 
Before you buy any Microsoft Office product, there is probably an Open Office substitute. It works just as well as the Microsoft programs but it is free.

I've had mine for years now. It has an easy life now that I use my phone or a tablet for most things. The laptop runs well when I need it though.

If your laptop is virus and malware free and still slow maybe it's your hard drive. If it's HDD then buy an SSD to replace it 🙂

Mine is probably on the cheaper side. I only use it to browse the net, watch tv and type stuff on.

I've been reading a little about Ssd thanks @The Bronze it may be the solution. But now I cant figure out what model the laptop is haha. It says G on the sticker, but the lenovo site did not list a suitable ssd for it. It did for other G models. I can go in and ask at the shop next time I am city bound. Its great to learn these things, even if tech is a bit like cars for me. In one ear, out the other.

It has been running better lately too, not sure if it heard my threats of replacement and I wonder if some issues are just due to overheating. I am not particularly gentle with it and I do make it run netflix and other stuff at the same time.

I duno, maybe I should upgrade the tv to save it some heavy lifting! The cords are annoying and a beacon for bunny teeth.
 
My hard drive went bad (1st time ever). Went with SSD PNY 480gb. WHich was about half my original HD drive. So much faster now. 🙂
