How low does the sun have to be?

At the end of "Afterlife," Spike told Buffy that he can walk around in the outside world in the daytime when the sun is "low enough." At the end of "In the Dark," Angel waits for the sun to go down almost completely before he takes off the Gem of Amarra, so I'm thinking how low does the sun have to be for vamps to move around in the daytime? That last scene in "Afterlife" was brighter than "In the Dark"'s, so how did Spike get from his crypt to the back of the Magic Box without being on fire? I don't see a blanket anywhere near him... Seriously, the scene in "Afterlife" looked like it was really hot outside.

I'm gonna say that since they're in California, it probably depends on how high the Smog Index is on any given day. Lots of smog, vamps can come out early.

Or it could have something to do with creative license and whoever happends to be directing, cinematographing, and/or writing a particular episode. But I'm digging the smog idea.

Hmm, really pondering this one.

I think that the lower the sun is, regardless of brightness, there are more shadows created, thus it's easier for vamps to move about.

Also, LD makes an excellent point. Creative license can controll the world....

If you really wanna know, you have to rephrase the question to how much UV can they stand, cause obviously there are more things then just the angle to consider.

He is in the shadow, there is nothing indicating he's in direct sunlight.
I think he means low enough as in, the shadows, becuase throughout that scene he doesnt move into the sun.
But the whole, getting home part, maybe Buffy went into the Magic Box for him, and got him a blanket, OR, he came through the sewers...
