How old was William supposed to have been when he was turned? I always got the impression of very late-20s to very early-30s. Angel on the other hand explicitly stated that Liam was 27...

I'm not sure his exact age but I think late twenties or early thirties is right.

Spike to Buffy: I've been alive a lot longer than you. And dead even longer than that.

^ Spike said that when Buffy was twenty-two. I don't know what he considers "a lot older" than 22 to be.

I always thought it was around thirty and they implied it in the commentries.

Actually Liam was 26 when he was turned.

Actually Liam was 26 when he was turned.

Where's that from?

"I was born 244 years ago in Ireland, small town, good family. 27 years into an unremarkable life, i met a woman she said she could show me a world I'd never seen." ~Angel (Pilot)

I think from an outside the show perspective, we all know Joss sucks at math but it's quite clear from the Prodigal that Liam was born in 1727 and turned in 1753 making him (as the priest says in the ep at his funeral and it actually says so on his head stone) a man of twenty and six years.

I wouldn't be too woried about though for two reasons, it's not the first time Joss has been inconsistent with ages and it could be argued Angel wasn't being exact in the unaired pilot. Overall though I'd take the Prodigal to state his canonical age when he was turned.

Or Liam just could have been 26years & 11 months old, so Angel considers Liam to have lived for 27 years ;)
If you ignore Buffy's school transcripts in IRYJ then her age was consistent throughout the series. Her mother says that she is sixteen in WTTH and since in Witch she has been slaying for over a year that means she started at Sunnydale High after January (and not in September) which makes sense since the series began in March. Buffy stated that she is a Capricorn on the cusp of Aquarius, which would put her birthday in mid to late January (Jan 17-20). That ties in with the fact that Valentines Day was just a few weeks after her birthday in S2 and Christmas (usually the 10th ep on BtVS) was just a few weeks before her birthday in S3. The S6 episode All the Way was on Halloween and Dead Things was the same month as Older & Far Away (Buff's 21st birthday) since Spike still had a bruised face and Willow states that there is 32 days between DT and Gone and we know Gone took place the very next day from Wrecked making it still in December, thus showing that her birthday is in January.

Or, like we do it in Germany...
There's 2 ways commonly used to express someone's age, their age (which for me, for example, would be 20), and what year if their life they are in (so for me that would be I'm in my 21st year of life). This makes sense because, let's take the simplest one, a newborn baby is 0 years old, but in its 1st year of life.

If we now transfer this to Angel, he was 26 years old (as stated by birth and death date, plus what the priest says), but he was in his 27th year of life, which might be what he meant.

Or maybe I'm just fanwanking my way out of this 😛

I came to the same conclusion :) see above
It is a smart fanwank so it is allowed.

I am sure we will eventually get an official age for William Pratt when he was sired. I was shocked when we finally got to know what his last name was.

That Pratt is canon is questionable. I think it was used in Asylum(the comic) which makes it canon to me, but it depends if you count Asylum as canon or not.

In the commentaries to Lies My Parents Told Me, whoever did the commentary mentioned something like "It's so silly, a man in his fourties sitting in his mom's lap". (Might be thirties.) I remembered thinking that it must be too old, but even tough James looked young in season 2, he did look 40-ish in season 7.

So I would say 30-40, overall. But then we have to take into account that due to conditions back in the 19th hundreds, people aged faster. William probably got good food(rich and all), but I heard that a century still made a difference to how people age and how long they live.

Buffyverse Fan agrees: Or Liam just could have been 26years & 11 months old, so Angel considers Liam to have lived for 27 years 😉

Yes but if I'm being really anal, Angel would have said "In my 27th year", rather than "27 years into..." because he hadn't been around that long, either way it doesn't really contradict my post. I'll go with 26.
