How to Disagree Agreeably

Every intelligent person already considers all (or most) of this when arguing (except maybe when they get really heated and emotional over something.) It's the closed minded people who are impossible to argue with that you need to be careful of. And there are PLENTY of these type of people everywhere.

I love number 1 and 9, they're all good but those stood out to me. Good article!

Good article! I think number 9 is really important to consider, that you should aim to understand the person rather than "win". I have a problem with this sometimes when I'm talking about something I really care about, I just want the person to go over to "my side" and tend to argue from that standpoint. I should really try to focus on understanding instead in those situations, I think it's often from there a person has the potential to really listen to your opinion as well as you listening to theirs.

I love how the very first words are "Yankees and Red Sox." Lu, where are you? 🙂

It's not really listed on there, but for me the key is to not take things personally. Especially when we're discussing things in an online forum. It's OK to disagree and have different viewpoints. I can objectively debate issues without getting personal both with the other person or myself.

I definitely agree with this. I think sometimes online people tend to take things more personally or as an attack when the writer didn't really mean it that way. That said, it's sometimes hard to convey what you are saying and the inflection you mean when you are typing. Sometimes you might come off an combative when that isn't your intention at all.

That said, like the earlier thread, re-read before you post!

I love this article... Numbers 1,3, and 9 really stood out to me. I know, personally, I have the tendency to get really sarcastic and mean when I'm debating something, and when someone says something to bait me, it's usually really hard for me to walk away. I need to get better at following the three I mentioned, for sure. 🙂
