In a recent survey of Consumer Reports readers, the respondents who tried to negotiate for a better deal were rewarded with a lower rate or room upgrade 80 percent of the time. Skip the toll-free booking number; call the hotel directly and talk about room rates with a clerk.

And here I thought the answer was going to be 'book through Cait'...
Hell yeah, it seriously works. Also, don't be afraid to ask for discounts if they offer them. With my hubby being military, I've learned that a lot of places offer a military discount, just not proactively; you have to ask for them.

I second Cait, I thought Sco was gonna put "Just call Randiann! She'll hook you up....."

Just promise me one thing (cause I hear it all the time)....don't call the hotel back AFTER you check out and ask for a better rate. Cause it isn't happening. You booked it; you agreed to it, you gave me your credit card. Get over it.
