How to Pretend to Understand Art
1
Study the artist beforehand. Perhaps this artist had personal struggles as a child or is an activist; consider that the majority of his/her artwork may focus on those important aspects when coming into a situation.
2
Stare thoughtfully at the piece. Someone who totally “gets” art will thoughtfully examine the piece, typically rubbing the bottom of his/her chin to get an extra pensive look.
3
Focus on one aspect of the art. If you are totally drawing a blank and have no idea where to go with your comments, think about honing in on one aspect of the piece and devise some sort of commentary that won’t call attention to the fact you are drawing a blank.
4
Make only general comments if asked or piggyback on other’s comments. One way to get around having no knowledge of art or the piece is to remain quiet and perhaps agree with others in your party.
5
Respond to a question with a question. In some cases coming back with a questions to a question may work. However, you can’t do this during the entire excursion or exhibit as you will end up appearing to be annoying and/or your cover will be blown.
