How was Spike to die ?

Ok so Spike was meant to be killed off in S2 that we all now. But there have been different stories of how he was meant to die.
1 To be killed off in What's My Line
2 For Angelus to kill him in Innocence and replace him

So which was it ?

I think he was supposed to die in What's My Line pt. 2 when Buffy knocked him over the head..

What's My Line pt two. Dying in an organ fire and then it would've been Dru and then Dru and Angelus. In Innocence there are many deliberate Dru/Buffy parallels.

James Marsters has said that it was Angelus who was originally going to kill him and take his place. Which is where the confusion comes in.

I've never heard that theory. The writers have said its from 'WMY', and that seems to make sense, its a high point for Spike as a bad guy.
