Ok, so I am writing a paper but let me asure you, I have been a fan of Buffy, AtS and Firefly for ages. Down and dirty and straight to the point I recently entered college and was forced into an English Composition class where we can chose any subject to write on. I chose Joss and have my basic paper completed. Of course because I've watched ever ep, commentary and special feature available on dvd in the us I have alot to say, but due to circumstances beyond my controll I no longer own any of all the dvd's I had obtained over the years. (I even had Tru Calling cuz who dun love Eliza?) *weeps* and I miss them all.

To the point though, I serieouly have a quote at the tale end of my paper, a beautiful quote of Joss's and probably one of his more famous, but for the life of me I can not recal exactly where I got it from. Its the one where he says

"I'd rather make a show 100 people need to see, than a show that 1000 people want to see."

He's quoted all over the place as having said that but I need the source for my citation (english comp you know?) So if anyone can give me as much detail on exactly when he said that.. if it was a video interview (which I swear it was but again.. dun have the disks) please tell me. Interviewer, disk number, whatever. If it was a journal or article and you have a link or copy.. PLEASE contact me with that info as well. There's a bag of A pos in it for ya.

As for the hi .. this is who I am..well, I'm 32 and female living in the US, about to be divorced and studying Computer Information Systems with hopes for a WebMaster Associates Degree. Oh and my paper is due tomorrow so I'd like to place a rush order on my request.

I'm assuming that you've tried a Google search for your quote, which is about as far as my expertise goes 🙂 However, amongst our lovely members we have a few highly-trained search operatives and if they can't find your quote, it don't exist 🙂

I've just done a quick Google and found that Joss quote on the following -

Unfortunately, none point to a source but I would say that IMDb and the BBC h2g2 ones are pretty reliable.
 
yup.. I googled. Honestly the only place I've been able to find it is on IMDB where they have a list of quotable quotes, but not their origin. Which is extremely frustrating. And can I add that I really want an A on this paper cuz my putz of a soon to be ex has made it his mission to let me know that college is changing me into a strong headed woman (although those are not the words he used. I'm pulling an A in Algebra and it needs a friend in English so again,. I beg, I plead I bribe.

Wish I could help, but all I can offer is sympathy. I know that problem of trying to source a quote.

I know the one you're talking about. I too have seen it on multiple occasions, but can't remember where, or even when the first instance was.

It might even be one of those when you go back looking for the source the original site has disappeared from the internet. If you had more time I'd suggest using the search function of sites like this one where old interviews are quoted and archived. Those search functions are limited though. You'd have to use a simple query like "Joss interview", then Ctrl F each one.

Have you considered this though? Is there a way to make the actual story of the search for the mysterious quote relevant to the paper? For example if you speak of the difficulty in separating the myth from the man you can mention that quote, and show how it appears around the internet.

For actual information though, the only thing I can offer is, I'm almost certain I've seen that quote quoted at Whedonesque.com in the members comments.
 
appriciate your input. I'm not sure if I could switch around my ending paragraph to make the search for the quote relevant but if it comes to it, I may have to. I'll go check out the site you mentioned and see if that helps. TY all again.
 
Actually I found one instance of it at Whedonesque for you.

Quotable Joss: "I've said this before, but it is how I feel and I know no other way to say it exactly: I would rather have 100 people who need to see this show than 1,000 people who like to see this show."

He also repeats the statement he's already written the end scene for S7, and that it makes no difference whether there will or won't be a S8.

It's interesting because it sources the quote to be at least pre-Buffy season 7 completion. Unfortunately the site it links to is dead.

that book, joss whedon: the genius behind buffy has a quote of him saying that in it. if it does not need to be the first place he said it, you could use that, cause you can find that quote in there, and its not like some fan saying 'i remember that joss said...'. if that cant help, sorry, ive got nothing else.
