Howlers Unite

I've been debating starting this series. It keeps popping up in my amazon "for you" pages. I'm assuming you are a fan? lol

I read the first book and I got a bunch of others, all remaindered. I couldn't seem to get into the second book, though, so have put the series aside for now.

Finally one suggestion that IS in the library! Got a copy of the first book and read the first 5 chapters. Straight into the action. Reads like a movie so its easy to visualise, maybe unfortunately hah. Bit different than the fairies.

Red Rising is a series of sci-fi novels where a future humanity has spread out and colonized/terraformed the solar system. There are no aliens but humanity has divided itself into 'castes' through extreme genetic engineering. All the castes are colour-coded for their different roles in society so you have grey (security/law enforcement), blues (navigators), pinks (pleasure), black (scary af), the gold (the noble warrior elites divided into houses) and the reds (the shlub-miners of Mars). There are other colours I can't recall offhand

Basically the series first 3 books (Red Rising, Golden Sun, Morning Star) is about a 'red rising' to destroy the oppressive caste system, the books after (Iron Gold, Dark Age, Lightbringer) are about what comes after. It's all very evocative, crammed with great characters and ideas. If you like good sci-fi then you should check it out.

Extreme Genetic Engineering? Sounds like the name of this years version of Geneco's latest Version of our Genetic Opera
I have never had such a visceral reaction to books. Like, I need a nap after I finish reading lol. No character is safe, and the author (Pierce Brown) does not hesitate to put his main character in a situation he can't get out of. You actually fear for the characters when they're in peril because you don't know what the author might do to them.

The term, 'Smile you are on Candid Camera' obviously means nothing.
I'm not much of a reader but I did discover Red Rising full cast graphic audios. Absolutely loved the original trilogy. I was completely drawn into the world. It's one of the rare occasions where I'm hooked on the plot and characters. It's a proper roller coaster of emotions and there's lots to think about as well.

I've been hesitant to start the second trilogy because I liked the conclusion to the original and I'm not sure if I want to know what comes next.

I didn't finish Red Rising before it was due back, but I'm back in line to borrow it again after the holidays. Got up to just after Titus War. There is a heck of a lot to visualise!

Ugh I am halfway through Golden Son, I stalled after Darrow and Mustang had their little "ask me to stay" tiff. The angst! Argh! Now Im worried one of them will die with all the things unsaid.

I thought I had posted about this but must have been in a different thread. The city library didnt have the next two books after red rising but a little country town not far from mine did! So I drove out there to get them.

I am so glad I get to finish the first trilogy at least. Its my kind of series, and Im finding Golden Son an easier read than Red Rising. Perhaps I am more used to the style or writing now. Red Rising was a bit overwhelming with layer upon layer unfolding, it took me a bit to get my head around the scenes. It did keep me guessing until the last pages as to if Mustang would betray them and I got back into the habit of covering the bottom of the pages so I dont skim ahead haha.

I liked Golden Son a lot more than Red Rising :)
I just started Iron Gold and I miss Darrow 🙁 I knew it would need to take other POV's on eventually, so its not a surprise, but I did enjoy Darrows voice and I miss it when reading Lyria and Ephraim. Its not as swift a read as the dragons or fairies for me. I am pleased with the time jump and look forward to the unknown of it.

Out of the original trilogy, Golden Son was my favourite. The end of Morning Star was shocking, it all came down to that end. I was in shock by Sevros end and relieved when it was a misdirect.

I am not sure how many more books from here that I can get from the library, but they seem to be popular so eventually it will all be available, no doubt. Its got far too much in it to be a tv series or movie, so I appreciate the books! I had somewhat agreed with Lorn early on and Im keen to see how the new world works out. "Where do we go from here" kind of thing.

I haven't looked at the posts here, but Red Rising has come in at the library for me, but I have to finish project hail mary before I can start it.

I just got up to the Lysander chapters and now its like Firefly! Woo! I was a bit meh about it until that chapter and now I am all YAY! More please! I am glad Cassius continued, I really liked his relationship with Darrow.

I am slowly getting through Iron Gold. Its heavy. Darrows hears his wives voices where ever he goes. From the depths of the mines with Eo and now out into the other planets, Mustang echoes. Its a lot. He is still my favourite character but he broke my heart when he left Mustang and Pax like he did after murdering his own. He better not get Sevro killed or I will cry!

Lysander is super interesting and Im keen to see where this side of the story goes.
