In Ted, Buffy killed her mother's boyfriend Ted by accident. It was only later that it was revealed that Ted was a robot. But if Ted was just an ordinary human and stayed dead when Buffy accidentally killed him, what would be the consequences of this for the rest of the season?

What a great question
I'd say the main consequence Buffy would have faced is her own personal one. She clearly disagreed with killing humans despite her Slayer status and strength, so dealing with the loss would play quite a big part in that season. She would feel the guilt, especially for her mother, who would find it difficult to even make conversation with Buffy after what happened. So there it creates another issue for Buffy and her mother, their relationship scarred after the death of Ted. It is unknown as to whether the police would take action against her, however it is unlikely as they showed some sympathy during that episode. In fact, it would have an affect on Buffy for the rest of the series, not just the season. She was an extremely delicate girl, I think it would have destroyed her partially.

Wow, that was depressing. Glad the dude was a robot.

Remember in What's My Line Part 1, two episodes before, she kills a member of the Order of Taraka at the skating rink. Wasn't he human? He wasn't the most appealing human I've ever seen, but he looked human to me. If so, she's already killed a human.

good point! I guess exceptions could be made for humans who are actively trying to kill her?

Every time Buffy kills or thinks she killed a human, it ends up with her not going to prison. She always gets away with it! I think there would have been a solution for that too.

This might affect the situation with Faith. Although now that I think about it I find it alot more interesting.

This was my first thought. The whole Buffy/Faith relationship would change!

When watching What's My Line recently, I was thinking about the whole 'kill a human' issue.. as in several episodes this is really covered as an important issue.. I have come to the personal conclusion that the cyclops dude wasn't human.. there are a lot of demons and other things that can look very human... but then again maybe Buffy just didn't really stop to check or care with this one.

that's what I ended up just assuming.
They kind of covered that when Faith killed that guy who worked for the mayor. Giles said something about collateral damage not being unprecedented.

Giles would have taken care of it. Giles always took care of it.

I agree with spicecakes. It definitely would've destroyed a part of her forever even though personally, I wouldn't have cared if she did because the guy was completely psycho & he makes me so mad in that episode.

Oh what a intersting question. I think Buffy would never came down to earth. So she would never be as shee was before the accident. Maybe Giles could make her to slay again, but she would had a pysichal trauma, she would been paralized. I don't realy think that she could live on as she was livig before the accident. Therefore she is to sensetive.

Good point... I forgot about that dude.

So why was Buffy so quick to forget that she has killed a human before when Faith killed the Mayor's assistant, Willow killed Warren, etc.?

I think the first question to ask is, would it have come to the accident if he had been human?
Robot-Ted threatened Buffy several times. He was evil and wanted to harm Buffy and Joyce.
Would've human Ted been evil?

If human Ted had been evil and Buffy really had accidentally killed him, it would have had pretty big consequences for Buffy. Also depending on Joyce's witness statement, of course.

If Ted had been human and good, there wouldn't have been a fight in the first place.

Back when we thought he was human, Ted was definitely unpleasant to Buffy, but he didn't threaten her in a physical way, as I recall. The "threats" he made were typical of the things that an exasperated parent might say.

Don't get me wrong, I didn't like him, I didn't like the way he treated Buffy, I thought he was controlling and condescending at the very least, and I was on Buffy's side as to not wanting him in the Summers household.

But his behavior, before the accident, did seem to me at least to be within the range of normal, not criminal behavior.

For the most part I agree with White Avenger, however while Ted's behavior would be understandable in a parent or even step parent, it was way controlling for someone he had just met. Also, while most of Ted's conduct could be excused, he did in fact start the fight, which would go beyond what is legal. She probably would not have been convicted of anything, as she was acting in self-defense and the law would definitely take their size difference into account. I think that the single biggest difference would have been the damage that would do to Buffy's relationship with Joyce.

However if Ted had been human and had stayed dead, I think Buffy's long term reaction would have been similar to her reaction in season 3. It would have haunted her for a time but I think she would have gotten over it eventually, and she would have definitely been better equipped to deal with Faith when she crossed that line. Another question that I think would effect Buffy's long term reaction would be whether or not Ted was still a serial killer.

How many humans has she killed (or thought she killed)

Didn't he say something like "I will slap your face?"

He was always very, very nice to everyone, but when he was alone with Buffy he turned kinda sinister.
My point is that, if he'd been human, he probably would've stayed that über-nice when being alone with Buffy.

Well, or not if he'd been still evil, of course.

He DID slap her face. Right after that she said something like, "I was hoping that you'd do that," and attacked him.

Harry Potter Karma.
Well, I think that the assassin was pure evil and blatantly trying to kill Buffy and Angel while Ted only slapped Buffy and threatened to send her to a mental asylum for what he found in her diary. Plus Buffy knew how much her mother loved him and made her happy so I think that would affect her feeling worse about killing Ted more so than the assassin.
