When The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 debuts later this month, it will mark the finale to the blockbuster movie franchise that made Jennifer Lawrence a superstar. However, this might not be the last fans see of their favorite Hunger Games characters and locales. According to a new report by The New York Times, Lionsgate is currently planning several theme park exhibits around its film properties, from The Hunger Games to Divergent and, yes, even Now You See Me.

Considering that The Hunger Games is partially a commentary on the way American culture abuses its young for entertainment, the idea of turning the movies into family-friendly theme park attractions raises some moral question marks. According to The New York Times, the same thought crossed the minds of Lionsgate executives, but the success of the movies urged them to forge ahead.

“The more we thought about it, the more we realized there was a major opportunity — not just to create something smart and captivating that Hunger Games fans would love, but to bring all of our franchises alive in new ways,” Lionsgate’s chief brand officer Tim Palen told the paper.

“There are so many positives about these movies, starting with the fact that she’s an empowered young woman,” Atlanta developer James Ram said.

According to the report, Lionsgate will be following the Warner Bros. model of licensing its properties to park developers rather than building the parks itself. Current plans are for theme parks in Atlanta and China. There will also be a “Lionsgate zone” included in Motiongate park, set to open in the United Arab Emirates next year. Potential Hunger Games rides include a recreation of Katniss Everdeen’s mining town, Peeta Mellark’s bakery, and roller coaster rides based on the movies’ high-speed Capitol trains, according to Palen.

But seriously, it is kinda weird that they're making a theme park out of hunger games. I would have preferred an online video game.

Do you think we'll get a meta-Hunger Games movie sequel where, in the future, the Hunger Games theme park has become a deadly form of entertainment for the masses.

Wayward children are sent to their deaths on deadly rides as people watch them battle for survival over the airwaves? If they survive all the hellishly deadly entertainment then they become heroes.

The movies are problematic themselves.

It's like a "anti-war" movie that spends 90% on war scenes and all cool military devices and explosion and posing and stuff. Then uses a few minutes to obligatorily preach you that war is bad. What message does it actually send? War is all cool of course!

I think you might have missed the point a bit, HG is a reflection of our own society in a way. Our own world spends most of it's time at war, and yes that's exactly what people say to us, war is bad, don't do it. But everyone else is doing it. The movie is about oppression and fear, it's a dystopia, of course that's gonna be the main theme. Also, there's been a total of 2 explosion in 3 movies, and it's only the third book/movie that deals with the war, and even then Mockingjay part one has about a eight of the scenes where they actually show the war.

Hard to imagine it would be successful long term but who knows. I wouldn't be surprised if it's more of a Lionsgate theme park that starts off heavily Hunger games themed and then changes as new things get popular, like Universal Studios.

@brinkster130 But look at all the movies you could conceivably make rides/themes from.. I was going thru the list of Lionsgate movies and man, there are alot.. a few I would actually be interested in seeing.
