Hurray for Angels Epiphany

I have to say during season 1 and the first half of season 2, Angel didn't impress me that much. It didn't have the same light hearted humor and in depth character relationships that Buffy did (IMO). I was also beginning to really dislike Angel when his obsession with Darla grew as did his attitude to his friends. But now after watching "Epiphany", "Disharmony", and "Dead End". I'm loving Angel more than ever (I mean the actual character).
He has this cute awkwardness about himself, and he's making a lot more jokes, ones that I can actually have a giggle about 😛

Did anyone else feel that Angel didn't have the same spark as Buffy until around this time in the series (mid season 2)

I agree.
I never really liked Angel (the character and the series) before his epiphany but it got much better after that. It was Angel's constant moping, which started to bug me around the third season of Buffy, that threw me off and I think the only thing that kept me watching were those other characters that I started to love (just to have one of them being killed off after nine episodes, nice).
But yeah, Angel one and a half years into his own show - Sir mopes-a-lot.
Sure, he still did a lot of moping because that's just how he is but not half as much as before and it really made him more likeable - to me, that is.
Though Angel (the show) never had that kind of light-hearted humour that BtVS had because it was a more "adult" show than BtVS. Sure, there was still a lot of joking around but never to the extent to that of Buffy.

But the first thing I thought when he said "I had an epiphany" it was "AAHHHH NOOOOOOO!"

but i disagree.

I mean, I'm still only in the second season and haven't seen epiphany yet.
When I was younger, I thought Angel didn't have what Buffy had...it was too dark for me or something. But these days, I'm usually impressed with the episodes of Angel and actually find them on a whole different level than Buffy episodes.
I like the progression of the relationshipson Angel...they didn't start out "best friends yay!"
But the message of Angel seems so much more evident and profound than on Buffy. Buffy almost feels like a teen soap with monsters at first glance. But after one episode of Angel and you get this epic adventure vibe.
I love Buffy & the Scoobies...but lately I've been rooting for Team Angel. And I haven't even gotten to epiphany yet.

I think Angel was always funny but I think that maybe Buffy and Co stole the show , but when hes on his own show he really does shine hes funny, broody, vain lol and he has compassion. x

I agree, sort of. I liked Angel in Buffy, but then in season one of Angel I found him rather boring. By the end of season two, I do think his epiphany really changed him as a character and he became a lot more likable to the fans. It was always nice to watch though, just to drool over DB. 😉

I think the character becomes funnier as the show progresses, but season two is by far my favorite season of Angel. It is a little cool to see Angel acting so dark even without losing his soul.

really liked the episode "Epiphany", especially watching Angel tryin to get back in his team's good graces.

Plus he appears to be loosening up more, less broody.

I prefer Angel before the Epiphany. 😀 I love how dark he got, Dark Angel is a good Angel IMO. It makes him kinda like Angelus, but saner. And it greatly reminded me of Buffy S6, which is always fun. 😀

I never really watched Angel's series on a regular basis until Season 5, but, with both Buffy AND Angel canceled, and already having all 7 seasons of Buffy, Angel became the only game in town, so I bit the bullet, shelled out the cash, and bought all 5 seasons of Angel. I have to say, I liked him much better on his own show than I did when he was in Sunnydale. Whether by design or accident, Buffy simply overpowered him, so much so that his character never really seemed to evolve there. It wasn't until we saw him out from under Buffy's wing that he really seemed to develop. (A perfect example of what I'm talking about was the scene in "Sanctuary," when Angel tells Buffy not to come to "his town" and give him orders. Imagine what would have happened to him if he had tried that back in Sunnydale) There is a definite parallel between Angel leaving Sunnydale so that he could learn to make his own decisions and fight his own battles, and Giles leaving Sunnydale in Season 6 so that Buffy could do basically the same thing. For both characters, when they reached a certain stage in their development, they had to be figuratively kicked out of their warm secure nests so that they could finally begin to fly on their own. Angel had to leave Sunnydale in order to really become a champion. (I personally don't believe that that was the case with Spike, but that is a debate in and of itself, completely independent of ship preferences, and not a part of this thread.)
