"Hush" has failed me!!!

I've never been this more upset. For the first time, gentle viewers, I've tried to get a friend of mine into Buffy with the one episode I thought would be the hook, line and sinker. And guess what? He liked it until the ending. He didn't like how she screamed and the heads popped off and that was it. He described it as "meeting the most beautiful woman in the world, and you guys are having a wonderful time, only later on to discover she has crabs."

I can't believe that would turn him off of Buffy completely! I am so lost and confused. 🙁

i started off with hush and my friend really enjoyed it, but she still won't watch any other episodes with me.
 
But that sucks so bad! Like how can you NOT be hooked after that episode? I am in denial-land. 😡
 
I don't know, 'Hush' really freaked me out when I first saw it. The demons in the straight jackets chasing after the people really turned me off of the episode. I can understand that someone would not like the episode, but it was still an amazing one. Though I can't see how it would turn someone off of Buffy as a whole.
 
Maybe your friend thinks every episode is like that? Like with a pretty cool story and villain but ultimately a stand-alone ep? Just a theory because I've been turned off by shows for that reason before. If that is indeed the reason, you could ask for one more chance and try showing an episode with a major character and possibly a cliffhanger. I always use a cliffhanger episode to lure people into shows.

(BTW- I love 'Hush') 🙂
 
Im glad I had a bit more luck than you. I showed Hush to my boyfriend, and while he isnt hooked (yet) he did admit Buffy wasnt as lame as he thought it was 🙂 So thats a start!

Well it's not for everyone I guess. I love it but I can see why someone would see that ending as cheesy (the 'princess' getting her voice back and shrieking consequently saving them all... it's a bit fairytale, which I like but I'll concede that it's not for everyone 😀)

Perhaps force him to watch another episode, like 'School Hard' or 'Passion' or something. Maybe chose another of your favorite episodes that is less 'special' Buffy and more 'every day' Buffy in it's style. 🙂
 
Well, honestly, I thought the ending to "Hush" was a little bit lame, myself. LOL I love the rest of the episode, but Buffy's "scream" (which was probably the worst TV or movie scream ever!) seemed like a really stupid way of killing them to me.
 
I was cracking up laughing when he gave me the "crabs" metaphor. But seriously guys, I'm so mad. It's like I set him up with my favorite sister whom I love dearly, and he stood her up. I was thinking, "Is Buffy not *sniff* good enough for him?". LOL I'm thinking about giving him another shot at it to see if he likes it. He trusts my intuition (I gave him Breaking Bad, which he is obsessed with now, and I just gave him Veronica Mars, so if he likes Veronica then he should DROOL over Buffy).

I was thinking about giving him Surprise/Innocence. I don't want to give him Passion because I'm saving that shock for when (or if) he gets attached to the characters. What should I show him guys? He thinks Breaking Bad is the Buddha of television shows, and if you haven't seen that show, it's a very dark and bleak show. So should I give him some darker episodes? The Wish maybe? I need help!!! :eek2:
 
Those are some great choices, [MENTION=11396]WileyDairyGnome[/MENTION]. But I don't know about Bad Eggs. It rubs a lot of people the wrong way, plus it's really not one of my favorites either. The Pack is great, and Band Candy is hilarious. Tabula Rasa may be too character driven, and I think it may be funnier/sadder if he knew and loved the characters, you know? But see he likes arc driven stuff. He said he was turned off by the sudden ending of Hush. That's why I was thinking Surprise/Innocence because it's an arc, it's powerful, has its dark moments, and it makes you want to find out what happens next.

Well...I can say the same thing for "Hush", but hence, "Hush has failed me", so I'm looking for a new device.
 
May I suggest OMWF? 😛 But it's possible he's not into musicals and he'll probably think it's silly. 😛

Or maybe Living Conditions or Him? They're both very funny, but not really story arc-y. :/ I hope you find something to get him into it! 😀

That sucks. "Hush" is an excellent episode. It is very dream-like, especially with the haunting score. You can get into it without knowing anything else about the show (because like EvilBuffy mentioned above, it's pretty stand-alone). Yeah, the climax with Buffy's awkward shriek seems a little cheesy, but it's just to surprise a viewer. Like you're expecting this big vocal explosion and get a cracking off-key scream instead. Tell your friend that was part of the fun 🙂

Anytime I have ever tried to introduce someone to Buffy I showed them "Hush" with satisfying results. After that I usually follow it up with "Fool for Love" and maybe "The Gift." Those are fairly standalone as well ("The Gift" sums up the entire situation in a few minutes.) I'm a bit apprehensive about "Once More, With Feeling" though. It's a great episode, but in my opinion not really for beginners...
 
I just show them Buffy from the "School Hard", because I don't want to give them spoilers. It's a good springboard because I feel S1 isn't that worth watching, except for "Prophecy Girl" (and "The Witch"), and "School Hard" is an excellent episode that introduces the awesome that is Spike.

Kind of wide-eyed at the Buffy's-scream-saves-the-day hate. I loved how that the scream defeated the Gentlemen. It worked very well with the fairytale theme--and I love fairytales. Like, "Gingerbread" is one of my favourite episodes--so I loved absolutely everything about "Hush".

You know, thats a real good theory. I never thought of it that way. There are many shows that I don't care for because their show has that set up. I feel like im forcing myself to watch Grimm.. I guess I just accepted Buffy from the get-go.

I agree with this, it be like introducing someone to Buffy with Once More With Feeling. I would choose a normal Buffy episode next time...
 
Maybe Conversation With Dead People is dark and emotional enough to show him how deep the show is and will leave him saying: "Now, what on earth were they talking about? I want to see it all!!"
