When Willow kills Warren, Giles is really really mad with her for killing a human, but woah there. We go back a season, am I right in saying he killed Ben? I think I am. And Ben was more innocent than Warren, I mean even if Glory did live in his body.

Do you think Giles was unfair to act this way? 'Cause I do

I think he wasn't so much mad at Willow as he was at the fact that she'd lost her innocence. He'd known her since she was a fifteen-year-old computer geek with no knowledge of the world. Now she's a murderer. I think he felt bad about that, maybe that he couldn't protect her from becoming that.

rep for constantly being the voice of sanity! :p
Really, I think Buffy Obsessed Fan has her episodes mixed up. Giles never shows anger towards Willow for the actual murder. He's angry because she's messing with magic in a way that's unnatural, and dangerous, and that precedes Willow's confrontation with Warren.

Remember that scene in the kitchen, in Flooded, after Willow resurrects Buffy?

Giles: Oh, there are others in the world who can do what you did. You just don't want to meet them.

For a view of Giles feelings towards Willow as a reaction of what Evil Willow did it would be better to check the early eps of Season 7.

I deserve a lot worse. I killed people, Giles.

They stop and look at each other.

GILES
I've not forgotten.

WILLOW
When you brought me here, I thought it was to kill me or to lock me in some mystical dungeon for all eternity or—with the torture. Instead, you go all Dumbledore on me. I'm learning about magic. All about energy and Gaia and root systems.

Do you get the impression Giles is angry, or understanding?

You said what I was thinking!
Yeah, i think N4H is right he wasnt really mad at her for killing warren, i think he was more understanding and sympathetic more then angry, he was really really angry when she brought buffy back with the magic, remember he said to her "You're a very stupid girl." and all the rest that follows that argument

I think that has a lot to do with his own bad experiences with magick though, right? I mean, in his teenage days as Ripper, he and Ethan apparently killed someone (unless I'm getting totally confused)
It has a lot to do with Giles not wanting to see Willow go down that same path, he doesn't want to see her get hurt or put herself in danger because in a way, he's her father figure too. And maybe he feels a helluva guilty because he bailed. It wasn't just Buffy that relied on him, the rest of them did too and he wasn't there to stop Willow getting too deep into the dark magicks before Tara was killed.

But he was never angry that Willow killed a human... it was all about the magicks

insightfull
he killed Ben to save the world.. If he had of had mercy, like he had said in 'The Gift', Glory would re-emerge, and she would have tried again to get back to her hell home dimension, endangering Buffy.. Willow killed Warren out of Vengeance, ok, his death can by some be seen as justice, but still, it was only out of vengeance. This is different, Giles made a sacrifice (his innocence for the world) whereas Willow was on a vendetta

No, not at all. It's a really interesting topic, hence all the replies.
I did see Giles as being too harsh with Willow after she raised Buffy.. but I also remember not liking how impressed Willow was with herself, just before she became out of control.

I think that he was justified in his anger, mostly because Willow killed Warren for revenge (I can't say he didn't have it coming, though.) Giles, on the other hand, killed Ben because he felt it was the right thing to do for the world as a whole. In short, Willow killed for selfish (but I can't say unjustified) reasons while Giles killed for the greater good.

No Giles was acting in a very utilitarian way, too be honest to not kill ben/glory would have just been stupid and would have resulted in countless deaths as glory would definetly have gone even more psycho and killed the scoobs and then anyone else she felt like.

Whereas Warren did need to be stopped but killing him wasn't the only option to accomplish this and he was nowhere near as much as a nuisance as ben/glory.

Also Giles' killing of ben was unselfish whereas willows murder of warren was entirely selfish and was a result of her insatiable desire to soothe her vengeance.

I think Giles acted in a way that would be SEEN as hypocritical but I don't think that Giles was unfair to Willow because, unlike himself, Willow CHOSE to murder Warren over the death of Tara, whereas Giles did what he did because he felt he had to. If there was a choice between saving Ben and destroying the world or killing Ben and therefore killing Glory to save the world, then Giles obviously chose correctly. He killed to save; Willow killed for vengeance.

Giles knew that some way Glory would come back if he didn't do what he did. He was saving the world. Even tho Ben is innocent, he kind of isn't. He knew what was happening. And this was just something Giles had to do to save Ben from Glory and save the world.

i want to switch gears a little and state that giles did to ben what ben should have done to himself. i mean, come on, if i knew that the distruction of the known world would be brought about by something that only i could prevent by killing myself..........i would kill myself. ben was very selfish. he knew deep down inside that eventually he would die (sooner than later) because glory was becoming more powerful every day than the magic that kept her inside him. ben is as much to blame for season 5 as glory.

k. back to the topic. im glad giles killed ben (see paragraph above). he did it because he HAD to. willow raised buffy from the dead; not because she had to, but because she WANTED to.

HAVES and WANTS are very different things.

so, in summary, i vote that giles was appropriate in everything that he said to willow and not hypocritical at all.

obviously tho we know from giles past there is no innocence to be lost, he lost his when he was younger. so not much of a sacrifice. still i agree he did it for more noble reasons.

Well, you have to take into account the whole survival instinct. It's not like he was severely depressed/suicidal, he wanted to live.
Also, unless I'm remembering it wrong, Glory wasn't that much of a problem until recently (being season 5-ish) when she was able to emerge completely with no hinderance from Ben.

i would understand the survival instinct thing if ben was actually trying to survive. to me it seemed like he was more or less hiding from the world. i mean, look at the room he lived in; it was tiny (he was living a life of isolation). further, he knew what was inside of him and he knew that he was losing control of it........having said that, if it were me, and i knew what kind of powers there were in the world, i would search every inch of the earth to find someone or something to help me.

think about it, if dawn used to be a key and ben is a jail for glory, dont you think that someone somewhere would know how to transfer glory into another person or even better, an object. i would transfer her into a log and then throw her on the fire ;-)

To repeat what everyone else said, Giles was never mad at willow over warren, he was mad about her getting so addicted to magic. I think Giles could have possibly seen this outcome happening b/c he had been down that road before ( The Dark Age). But this is why Giles Killed Ben.

Ben is Glory.......Glory is Ben......Ben is Glory.......Glory is Ben........

See how those terms are synonnomous? You kill ben you kill glory, which was the whole point of the mission at the end of season 5. B/c Ben was innocent Buffy could not do it, but Giles could. Plus I don't recall Buffy being around when they all figured out that Ben was Glory and Glory was Ben. I could be wrong there it's been a while since I've watched that season. So, that's my take

I don't exactly remember whether she knew, either, but she did see Glory change to Ben (hence why she quit smacking with the troll hammer), and didn't display any surprise, so I'd say she had an inkling, at least.

Giles killing Ben in cold blood for "the greater good". You know, I find that just as scary and disturbing as Willow killing Warren for revenge.
