Hypocritical much?

Giles vs Ripper

Giles killing Ben in cold blood for "the greater good". You know, I find that just as scary and disturbing as Willow killing Warren for revenge.

I think there's a definite parallel between the Giles/Ripper character and the Angel/Angelus one, certainly not to the same extreme, but definitely there. At the beginning of Season 1, Giles was pure nerdish librarian, almost a comic figure. By the end of Season 6, he was proposing the definite possibility of killing Dawn "for the greater good," not to mention killing an at that moment helpless young man, not in the heat of combat, but in cold blood and with no apparent hesitation or regret, and in Season 7 he's plotting to murder Buffy's strongest ally, once again, "because it's for the best."

Given the evolution of his character over the seven years of the show, plus what we are led to believe about his dark past as Ripper, I think he does seem quite hypocritical toward Willow. Ripper, in fact just might be one of those people that Willow "wouldn't want to meet."

I think Giles was angry at himself, he knew Willow was too caught up in the magic at the start of season 6 but didn't really do anything about it. Like so many have said, he knew what magic could do.he has lost friends and nearly himslef in it when he was young and if you remember he never really wanted willow involved in it in the first place. But desperate times calls for desperate measures, with Angelus loose and Jenny dead someone had to be the witch.

But i do think there is a deep theme of hypocracy among the scoobies. Willow tortured Giles mercilessly, almost killed him and when she did it she was willow, not some alter ego. Angelus did the same thing, yet Willow gets the Dumbledore treatment, while Angel who actually was not in control of his body at all gets treated like Sh!tE. Also, when Anya starts killing again in selfless Xander is all about forgiveness but when it was Angel who was the cold blooded jelly donut he saw nothing but evil. I mean anya CHOSE to be a demon TWICE while everything with Angel HAPPENED TO him, it was out of his control. It seems like there are double standards running rife within the scoobies.

I agree. I love this about the scoobies because it makes them human. I hate this about the scoobies because I feel bad for Angel, Spike, and anyone else who gets left out in the cold because they're not part of the inner circle.

while i agree with the hypocracy in the show sometimes, i think there are some circumstances here. for xander, he was just in love with anya, and he was blinded by that in some ways. he hated angel from the beginning, so it wasnt much of a change to not forgive him for the terrible things he did as angelus. in fact, if anything should be called into question (which i believe it has before anyway), it should be how anya was accepted to the scoobies without penance, regret, or anything for all the killing and torturing and vengeance from her demon days, and no one really minded. just to be clear though, i do think anya is awesome 🙂.

as far as giles and willow versus giles and angelus, there is the love factor there too. he loved jenny, and angelus brutally murdered her. willow only killed warren, who was a pretty bad person to begin with. doesnt make it right, just how he might have seen it versus the other scenario. then, there is the fact that she is just a corrupt witch, who he knows has goodness in her heart. angelus is a vampire; a vampire is evil by nature, no choice (well, there's the whole spike thing, but thats another topic as well). maybe he believed willow could be helped and learn to be a "goddess" instead of a big evil, and use her magic for good, through her own control. angel, however, just needs perfect happiness, or even the right spell (like that shaman in angel did), and he's totally evil again. its not like they could talk him down, or teach him to be in touch with the "purity of his inner vampire". he'd still be evil and brutally murder people.

well, thats my opinion on the subject anyway. argue with it if you will.

When Willow kills Warren, Giles is really really mad with her for killing a human, but woah there. We go back a season, am I right in saying he killed Ben? I think I am. And Ben was more innocent than Warren, I mean even if Glory did live in his body.

Do you think Giles was unfair to act this way? 'Cause I do

Oh for goodness sake... sometimes I really don't think people watch Buffy properly. People take everything at bloody face value. It's quite depressing

Giles acted that way because Willow was killing through RAGE and REVENGE, not for the good of preventing Glory coming back and trying to destory the world again one day. End of!

Surely you can see the difference... use your brains

Oi calm down. She was just asking a question, there is no need to be so utterly rude to her, she's a young girl give her a chance.

I'm going to add my voice to those who say:

1. Giles' killing Ben was different from Willow's murder of Warren. Giles saved the world. Willow satisfied her urge for revenge.

2. Giles yelled at Willow for abusing magic by bringing Buffy back, not for killing Warren. He was very supportive after Willow's meltdown. And, yes, I think there was a lot of parental-type self-blame coming out when Giles scolded Willow, especially considering he had made similar mistakes and been unable to steer Willow away from them.

3. Even so, the scoobies are sometimes a big bunch of hypocrites.
