I didn't get to see this while it was in the theaters, and only rented it this past weekend. Will Smith was good, and the special effects were okay, but one thing kinda disappointed me. Am I the only one who thinks that the "mutant zombie cannibal with the rabid bite" has been just about used to death (no pun intended). From the original "Night of the Living Dead" up until now, variations on the same theme have been used in at least a dozen different movies, probably more.

I thought I am Legend was awful worst film in years. If you havent already read Richard Mattheson book. Thats how the film should have been.

You're not the first one to have noted this problem.

When I saw it in theaters,I came off with the same impression-Smith busted his butt acting-wise,seeing New York as a deserted place was cool(but I'd have to think NYC would look a bit more rundown;if you saw the National Geographic Channel show Aftermath: Population Zero,you'd see what would happen if,suddenly,every human simply vanished. Let's just say the results aren't pretty.),but seeing the zombie thing kinda killed it for me(so to speak).

Yeah, I read the book a long, LONG time ago, and I agree, it was a better story. The original movie with Vincent Price, despite all of the cheezieness, was really closer to the book. Of course, how many movies are made faithfully from the books they were based on? Very few.
 
I haven't read the book (it's in my pile 'o books to read, though) but my hubby says the main character was a real sleaze and he liked the character better in the movie.
 
It's awesome, the book I mean. The film was okayish. And agreed, the character in the movie is more likeable, his legend is saving the human race. The legend of the same character from the book is slightly more villianous, so to speak. He becomes a legend for very dark reasons. Definately read it though, brilliant book.
 
the film was alright, it entertained me at least so i didn't feel like ripped off or anything.

YES, the whole virus thing is done to death, though for Resident Evil as a video game plot it works lovely (those movies tho...as such a huge fan of the games...*shudder*).

I think the best movies with this idea though was 28 days later and 28 weeks later. I think because of the instantaneous change with the Rage virus, and i think they were much creepier, and i think the CGI in I Am Legend of the vampire/zombie things were TERRIBLE. But 28 days/weeks, you just use people and its so much scarier.
 
I saw this movie a couple weeks ago with some friends (we finally rented it) and I have to agree that I was dissapointed concidering how awesome it looked originally.

Will Smith, I thought, did an outstanding job with his character. I think that despite the (severely!) over-done storyline they had a nice solid basis for a good movie, but really I felt as though throughout the entire movie I was being "jipped out". I was expecting something more more action-packed, and definitely for a lot more to happen than what did. Watching the movie, it was almost like I watched the same day over and over and over until finally it ended. I was really hoping for there to be a lot more attention on other survivors, a more intricate storyline somehow. A really great idea, but I just felt bored watching it. Don't think I would sit through it again. 🙁

Have to emphasize again though how well I though Smith did with his role. And I did like the way they wrote his lifestyle (having all those TV's with old radio shows, raiding houses one by one for supplies, keeping in shape, in by dark, etc...), I thought it was more or less accurate to what I think what someone may rationally do. And they really did emphasize in the first part of the movie just how alone he was (even with his furry accomplice), which although I wish they had expanded on the "survivors" deal a lot more I thought that was a very smart move for the storyline that they chose. If they were going to have him alone, they were going all out to emphasize that. Which I do give the writers/director etc. props for.

All in all, I probably wouldn't watch it again. But I'd give it a "nice try" rating 🙂

Everything has been used to death. There aren't any new ideas. There's nothing. Get used to it.
 
Some day, they'll do justice to this story, keep the original ending. Give it another decade or three.

I see they're doing more Richard Matheson adaptations. The Box, Countdown, and...Brett Ratner's doing an Incredible Shrinking Man remake (eesh, that can't be good).
 
I read the book just a little while before I went and saw the movie. So basically, my knowledge of the whole franchise went like this: saw the trailers, then read the book, then saw the movie. Going from the small amount of film I saw in the trailers, I could have told you the moment I finished the book, that the two were going to be nothing like each other. I went into the movie expecting the two to be different and I wasn't disappointed at all (and of course, it had nothing to do with my love for Will Smith cough*sig*cough). I think if I were to expect them to be similar, that I would have a different opinion on the movie.
 
It was boring.

I'm no action movie nut.

But when a guy spends ten minutes just making breakfast and looking at windows, your attention wanes.
