True north isn't quite where it used to be. The magnetic north pole has been moving so fast that scientists on Monday released an update of where true north really was, nearly a year ahead of schedule.

Earth's north magnetic pole is wandering about 34 miles (55 kilometers) a year. It crossed the international date line at the end of 2017. It's leaving the Canadian Arctic on its way to Siberia. The shifting magnetic pole is a problem for compasses. Airplanes and boats also rely on magnetic north usually as backup navigation.


Is global warming to blame for this as well?
 
No. Magnetic north and true north are very different things.
 
It's the other way around - I believe magnetic shift has a major effect on global warming but no one has figured out how to monetize it. You can invent a carbon tax to punish people for sinning against the environment but you really can't convince people to accept blame for polar magnetic shift. The shift causes rock to be scoured away from the underside of the mantle of the earth, moving the liquid core closer and raising the ground temperatures.

There is a large magnetic anomaly that ranges from Brazil eastward to cover most of the Atlantic ocean due east of Brazil. If we lose the magnetic field (it appears to be diminishing rapidly with a 10% reduction since it was first measured in 1855) we lose the protection from the charged particles in the solar wind. This may seem like a long time but compared to other geologic phenomena, it happens in a flash. The most recent polar reversal took less than 5000 years. We have the record of lava flow in the mid-Atlantic where the continental drift has occurred and we see fossilized plants that suffered genetic mutilation during these 5000 years due to the lack of a magnetic field to keep excess electrons and protons from causing damage. As the lava cools below the Curie point (the temperature above which magnetic materials become non-magnetic), it is magnetized in the direction of the existing field and we see reversals still maintained in the magnetic record and we know the rate at which the continents have drifted.
 
This isn't new news to me, but Dr Karl seems to think it isn't too big of a deal and that's where I got my info from haha.

Are magnetic poles influenced by solar behaviour? Genuine question. I got no idea 🙂
