I got season 1 today!

Heey! I just got season 1 today from a friend as a birthday present! I want to know how excited i should be, cuz i am 🙂, but i dont want to be dissapointed or anything. I have seen all the Buffy seasons and LOVE them! I just want to know if its just as good as Buffy or not. And is there anyone in Angel like Anya? Because i love her too 🙂🙂

No, Angel is horrible. As you can see, everyone around here hates it. You should give it back to your friend while you still have the chance and ask for season 1 of Charmed instead.

No, I'm TOTALLY kidding. Angel is excellent, but in my opinion, aside from its excellent fifth season which I think rivals any of Joss' other work, it's not quite on the same level that Buffy is. So as long as you don't go in with the absolute certainty that it is going to be just as good as, if not better than its parent show, I highly doubt you're going to be disappointed. Plus, if you do wind up liking it more than Buffy (and there are a lot people that do), you can be pleasantly surprised. 🙂

Also, I guess the Angel equivalent of Anya is Cordelia, but overall, the characters are very different than those on Buffy (not that they're not great, of course!).

I'm on the verge of liking Angel more than Buffy, but I haven't quite gotten there--and I doubt I ever will. Angel is a fantastic show, and although I don't think it's easy to objectively say which show is "better", it's easy for me to say that I enjoy Buffy more. Well, at least as a whole because on an episode-by-episode basis, I like Angel just as much.

I'd almost say that Lorne is a bit like Anya, in the sense that he's a very "out there" character, someone who's so much different than everyone else. I wouldn't quite say he's similar to Anya personally, but he serves a similar role on the show--someone who came from a different way of living, someone who sees things much differently from all the humans, etc.

Cordelia is definately the most like Anya in that she says what she thinks, especially in the first 2 seasons. But overally, they're still much different. I prefer Cordelia, myself.

Season One is good and you should enjoy it. I like Angel when he's shy and socially awkward, and there's a lot of that in the first season. The first time I watched the entire series, I liked it better than Buffy. Now that I've seen both series multiple times, I'm not sure.
