She has one of the most tragic stories in the whedonverse, yet remains perky and upbeat throughout. Even more-so than Buffy does. What do you think? Which characters compare to the calamity of Skye/Daisys life?

Debbie in Beauty and the Beasts should have never met Pete, who eventually killed her. You could say that if she had stood up for herself, Pete may have moved on and found a new victim, but in Debbie's world, that didn't happen.
Debbie just died though, her torment stopped, it ceased to exist. Debbie got peace.
Skye was a made an orphan, violently, grew up in uncaring foster care, lived in a van, met Mike and her entire existence was turned upsidedown.
Joins SHIELD, finds a family, gets shot, dies, gets resurrected with alien parts, falls in love with her SO, who turns out to be a liar and evil.
Finds out her parents are alive, her Dad evil and violent. Reunites with parents after gaining earthquake powers in the mist that killed her friend right in front of her face.
Shatters her own arms trying to control her powers.
Skyes mother gains her trust, until she turns out to be extra evil and tries to suck the life out of Skye, twice.
Watches her father kill her mother and then loses her father (again) to TAHITI...
then her best friend gets sucked into a portal to another planet and that is all before s3 begins!!!

I find Ward's whole arc to be far more tragic than hers.
He is literally failed by almost everyone in his life, in every way possible, including himself, from childhood to adult. I believe the character was completely redeemable with proper therapy and rehabilitation, up until the point they tricked him into shooting Kara. That's when he snapped, and from there he spiraled.
I found it really hard to watch at first, because as Coulson pointed out in season 1, the S.H.I.E.L.D hypocrites had the ability, and resources, to rehabilitate him, and they let him slip through the cracks because they were bitter. They let multiple characters slip through the cracks though, Kara (Agent 33,) Donnie, and Carl Creel (the brainwashed HYDRA assassin, who ends up being rehabilitated by none other than Talbot, and then helps S.H.I.E.L.D in the end) just to name a few.
I wept pretty hard at Wards death scene in Maveth for two characters that I loved deeply at that point. For Coulson, who fully gave himself over to vengeance (completely understandable btw) and for Ward, a broken soul who had been desperately crying out for help, and at that point had a death wish.
I thought the writers did a masterful job of pointing out the hypocrisy of S.H.I.E.L.D as an organization, and the S.H.I.E.L.D team throughout the seasons.
While I was initially disappointed that Ward didn't get a redemption arc, when I took a step back and processed everything, after finishing the series, I realized that the writers actually did give Wards character a redemption arc of sorts, just in a non traditional and subtle way. And they used Skye/Daisy his parallel character to do it.
I think its some deep and brilliant writing to be honest.
I'm planning to do a deep dive into my thoughts about Ward as a character, and explain why I am an unapologetic Grant Ward fan when I do my next rewatch. I'm not the best at translating my thoughts to writing though, so we'll see how it goes. Im like a non writer who suffers from writers block. 😂

Yes! Agree, he could be redeemed in some way (not necessarily therapeutic) in that all of his actions were a result of the environment he was in. He never had a chance to live free. I wanted to start a thread on Ward too, but much like you, I dont have the words right. So I'd be happy to read your thoughts on the rewatch.
There was undeniable chemistry between Skye and Ward. Somewhat explored after Ward died, when he was Hive. The talks about belonging and the mutual need to be accepted.
That adds another layer of heartbreak to Daisy. Season 3, she gets a promotion, has therapy with a dude who turns into a monster murderer, falls in love with lincoln electro boy, betrays him and the team after Hive, the man with her ex's face, brain snatches her, Daisy spills the lot to Hive, putting everyone in danger, gets the blood sucked out of her. Gets rescued by the monster therapist who then dies violently immediately. She goes through withdrawal, tries to return to Hive, is rejected, fails at killing him, so electroboy blasts off to space and both he and Hive die. Then she goes on the run, abandoning the team.
On the brightside, she can fly now...
There is more sad in there than in a soapie!

From the day they met! And I desperately tried to ignore it at first because at that point I loved Skye and couldn't stand Ward, so I didnt want them together. Little did I know how much that would change. 🤣
Not to mention, the way the writers slow cooked Skyeward was brilliant. Such good storytelling!
I enjoyed every single moment of Haisy! Especially when I realized that that was what Raina was foreshadowing in S1 when she says to Ward, "And when that day comes, maybe you two could be monsters together." I have a ton of ship videos of them mixed in with Skyeward lol.
And you didn't even mention what she goes through in seasons 4-7! She has one painful life, but she is given the forgiveness, and support to use those things to make her the strong woman she eventually becomes, whereas Ward is not, and thats why I think he is a bit more tragic in my eyes.
It was so much fun watching Skye grow into the woman she is by the end. One of my most favorite character arcs of all time, for sure.
