I'm watching a 9am-5am marathon of Buffy on SYFY in America right now, and it's 2 am and they're showing the musical

AND THEY LITERALLY CHOPPED UP ALMOST EVERY SCENE TO DEATH this is worse than what Hallmark does to The Golden Girls. What an insult to Joss Whedon and the people who created this masterpiece

To what purpose are they doing this? To keep the marathon shorter? Isn't the point of a marathon to show the whole thing for die-hard fans?

They chop the episodes to make room for more commercial time. Syndicated shows on late night pull in very little money per minute for commercial time, so, in order to pay for the show, the station has to sell more commercial minutes. More commercial minutes means less episode time, and very little or no effort is made to select which minutes are chopped. It may come in the middle of a scene or in the middle of a sentence, just as long as it results in additional commercial time.

Yeah but FX was never this bad when they syndicated Buffy

They showed the original, uncut version just once on TV, during the original airing in the various countries that airs the show, then after that, it was always, always cut down to 'normal' episodic length, which cuts out a lot of stuff, admittedly. The only place you can see the whole, uncut version is on the DVD/VHS sets.

But when FX reruned this episode they at least showed the Suite scene after the opening credits, and they actually showed the rest of "I've got a theory"

I don't know what was or wasn't shown in this marathon last night, as I'm in the UK and didn't watch it - admittedly, I don't watch a lot of BtVS anymore, so I probably wouldn't have watched it anyway. But from my perspective, when watching this ep on UK TV, the only time I saw the bit after the opening credits was on my very first VHS boxset. I also never saw Dawn's ballet or Spike saying 'Bugger this' during the 'Where Do We Go?' song until I got that boxset. It's always been cut out when aired on TV, at least in this country.

Weirdly in the UK they seem to look at it from a completely different direction. They showed the first season of The Good Wife on Channel 4 which is one of the main channels in this country, then from season two they aired it on More4 which is one of Channel 4's digital off shoots.

Anyway I missed the original run on More 4 and was waiting for them to repeat it on Channel 4 (C4) but they never did. I eventually spotted it in late night double bills on C4 in the listings (about 1am I think) so I set it to series record, and it was great cause I could watch two episodes a week but also great because there were no adverts. Not a single one. It felt like watching a DVD. Even between the two episodes they just ran trailers for other programmes as though they couldn't sell the advertising time.

I have a feeling that they were contractually obliged to air the program on their main channel and this was their way round it.

I always wonder how Americans can cope with the number of adverts screened over there, although I don't 'do' adverts any more. I record everything.

Once More with Feeling ran about 48 minutes whereas the rest of the episodes were about 42 minutes. When it was shown locally, they cut the dance scene where Dawn tries to escape from Sweet's minions and most of Tara's song when she is outside with Willow. Annoying.

We go to the bathroom, get more popcorn, or go tell the kids to stop arguing, finish their homework, and go to bed. The late night stuff we record and watch the next day.

Either that, or watch on the internet, where you can watch any series, any season, any episode, at your convenience, commercial free.

Of course that last one is probably totally illegal, unethical, steals money from the networks and the sponsors, and, for all I know, causes cancer and premature baldness. I, personally, would never do a thing like that.
