I have no friends.

Friends are not a requirement to enjoy life. In fact I'm much happier with less people in my life. A lot of people, whether they're honest or not, will be self serving and perceive your life as an extension of theirs, rather than an individual with needs and considerations for that individuality.

Basically what I'm trying to say is people are awful, make friends with animals instead. 😀

Priceless
Priceless
That's a message I can get behind :-)
A lot of friendships are pretty superficial and I prefer chatting online with people about a topic that I love for lighter interaction. Having said that, one of my closest friendships came from online fandom. I just don't have many relationships that are deeper ones and genuinely don't want many. I'm pretty introverted and prefer a small number of close relationships and I really dislike wasting time on pointless interactions about the weather or whatnot. It's much more satisfying discussing BtVS online in my downtime than trite topics with a bunch of people I'm enduring in person. 😀

Having no friends is only an issue if it bothers you and then you could join another group like you did in coming here. Nothing is set in stone. 🙂

Oh so nice to read these insightful posts! Love this place!

Much on the same trend, I know a lot of people, I have connections, but when it came down to me needing them and asking as my doctors proposed, I was not well received. It was a blessing and a curse to know who really cares and who just wants you for what you can offer them.

My online mates know the "real me" they get the good and the bad rants, and it feels like they enjoy my company more than my actual "real life" friends. Its actually lovely to be that real with people who owe you nothing, and they still choose to chat. My core group of online friends have been from this board (not all active members now) and some I've known for nearly 10 years 😱 those kinds of friendships run deep.

Since my brain/back injuries I find it difficult to converse in person. I repeat myself a lot, cant maintain eye contact, make uncontrollable body movements, and sometimes just cry (My eyes/nose will start watering at many chemical triggers) obviously people find this awkward unless they know the history. Even with that, its not been difficult to make new aquaintences in my new town, but it is difficult to feel interesting to them, or be interested in them.

Im also finding being truly alone, not worried of people just dropping by or phoning is very relaxing. I meditate and garden, I have more energy for myself and what I enjoy.

If being friendless is depressing to you, Do you have hobbies or clubs to go to? Clubs are good to find people with similar interests. Even our town library is a bit of a social hub 😛

I definitely don't think the internet is given enough credit for the friendships it can create. 🙂I've still got friends I met 10+ years ago on other factions of the internet. I went on my first holiday abroad with two girls I met on a discussion board, just like this one. I'm still friends with them to this day and although we don't talk much, when we do it's like we've never not spoken.

I prefer quality over quantity of online friends. The people I have spoken to online I've just formed an instant connection with, connections that honestly I find very tricky in real life, because I'm such a shy klutz. I can't initiate first contact with someone in a club or on the street, I've never been able to. I just don't have those issues online.

I have a lot of online friends, mostly met through gaming. I used to play this old Star Wars MMO called Star Wars Galaxies. It's very old, I believe Buffy was still on the air when the beta started. However I made quite a few friends in the game that I still talk to today; some of which I've known for over a decade since we were kids. It's the only game I ever got into like that and have struggled to make friends since.

In real life, I met some cool people in college that I sporadically keep in touch with, but I have a close group of maybe 8 or 9 friends at home that I've known for almost 20 years. We've been through some terrible crap together, but of course there were good times as well. Other than that though, I only talk to other people sporadically or not at all other than maybe some facebook likes or comments.

If you think you don't have any friends and that bothers you, that is a self imposed prison easily rectified. Into board games? There is a tabletop simulator on Steam... you can play Risk, D&D, Settlers of Catan, even the Buffy board game. There are communities built around making friends and finding people to play with, not just for Tabletop Simulator but all sorts of games. It starts out that way, but eventually if you stick around long enough, it becomes a social experience and everyone becomes friends, so you end up just logging in to talk to people. I come from an online gaming background so that is just some of my advice for you.

Got a couple of close friends. Probably my closest is like 40 something. (I know I'm weird). 😉 Plus met some cool people here. 🙂

I don't want anybody to feel bad about being lonely. I have certainly been there myself. Still, I can't be dismissive about the importance of friendship. It is magic. Just ask those ponies.

I was on the Storm Large boards for a while and was the third highest poster when it finally shut down and got converted to a facebook page (I refuse to join facebook). I went to a performance of Cabaret that she held in Rochester NY and met the people I had conversed with for years and guess what? They were exactly the same in person. Other than Buffy and Angel, the best shows on the air in the 00's was Rockstar INXS and Rockstar Supernova where both groups held a reality show contest for a lead singer. Storm was in the Rockstar Supernova series. I heard occasionally from them when they contacted me on the miata.net board but I had spent so much time on that board that I was relieved to have it end.

I am on the miata.net, clubroadster.net and miataturbo.net sites for all of us who are fans of the Mazda MX-5/Miata/Eunos. I meet some of these people at Miata get togethers and again, what you see online is what you get in real life.

I also have a few acquaintances from our Wednesday night and Saturday night car shows that are held from May until October in two venues nearby.

But I don't have friends that are here a lot other than friends of my daughter or son-in-law. And that suits me fine.

I was always a loner in my old high school. I saw the world divided into two kinds of people- enemies and potential band members. When I was 20 I was finally accepted into my own kinda Scooby gang and I loved every second of it. Didn't last though.

I kind of feel even now that close friendship with me comes with an expiry date. (@Geobubbles , don't leave me!) I mean, I still have friends around but they don't see the real me or they're not up to 'family stage' like I've felt in the past with different friends. Only exception here is my best buddy/guitarist mate, although I find it funny- when I first met him I thought he was a douchebag and didn't like him at all.

There have been times when I felt such loneliness that I thought I couldn't handle it. I think those times made me so much stronger and now I don't mind my own company.

I'm not really big on social media, this is the only board I post on really, but when it comes to people I know socially they all live/work in the same area, go to the same places & know the same people....plus they are mostly the same age group too so not exactly a diverse group....

One thing I love about this place is the huge spread of ages, countries, & life experiences of the people on here. We are a really diverse bunch but with one thing in common....a love of two shows that ended 20 years ago (Before some members on here were even born!!!!!).

Where else would such a mix of people interact & swap thoughts & ideas in such a laid back environment...safe in the knowledge that at any time they can hit that little cross up in the top right hand corner & just drop out......

As for Buffy....I had watched the series several times & thought I knew it well, but the more I come on here the more my eyes are opened as to how much I didn't notice, or never considered. And with the influx of new members coming in over time brining new opinions & insights it just never grows old....

Okay....I've rambled on way too long here....bottom line, I love this place & appreciate the responses I get from you good people to my inane prattling & even in the short time I've been mooching around these boards I have come to consider you guys as friends........

Sorry if this sounds a bit sappy but it's raining outside (again) & I'm feeling a tad bored & fed up........ 🙁

Friends can be tiring. They take energy and work. When I was younger I was kind of naive about people, I was just super friendly and open. This changed when I noticed a lot of people were just using me to meet others that I knew. Like, when I was in San Francisco, living at a residence club (The Harcourt...DON'T stay there!) there was A LOT of partying, drunkenness, and various hook ups. I was hanging with a girl from Manchester, a guy from Stuttgart, and another girl from Munich. I took pity on this American girl who didn't know anyone. So I included her in our group...next thing I know, this bitch was trying to exclude ME from the group!! Really, that's what I get for being nice? I've changed so much since then. I'm still quite friendly, but extraordinarily watchful.

I've discovered that being alone is super awesome. A lot of people are energy vampires...soul-sucking parasites. I mean, yeah, it can be fun doing stuff with people but not every day.

The Internet is a godsend because I can communicate without actually having someone in my face. 😛
