I Just Watched Ghostbusters (1984)

[Time to Shine]

Before everyone hates on me, I do really like this film but I believe it is a little overrated and I think this is because this is my first time watching it and I am a little bit older which both factors eliminate nostalgia and the enjoyment I could have got from it if I had watched it upon it's release in 1984. Nonetheless, it would be an understatement to say that this film is iconic and inspires many things we have today. Overall, I would rate it a 7/10

I doubt anyone would say it was high art, just a fun, goofy movie. I do have nostalgia for it, but I never thought it was Shakespeare. Still, as you say, there are still cultural references to it that you will now understand. Don't cross the beams, I am the gatekeeper and you are the keymaster, and the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man!

Even Buffy referenced it in S7, when Spike, whose chip is going bad, asks Buffy, "Who you gonna call?", and then comments that we'll never be able to use that line again or something.

On a similar potentially blasphemous note, I actually prefer The Invasion (2007) to Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), and the latter to the 1993 remake. But I liked them all (and think the 1978 one has the best atmospheric horror vibe), though I haven't seen the original.

This could be because I only had a minor brush with the fears (and hysteria) of the Cold War and the like. And back then I often had a dream of a son or little brother that I have to protect or save that looked like the boy Oliver in The Invasion.

Watching it for the first time now as an adult means you've got a different perspective for a couple of reasons. Most of us who love it have seen it multiple times. First time as children just loving the ghosts, action and general silliness. Then when we're older loving it more appreciating all the jokes we missed as kids. Also as a drinking game with mates it's amazing.

The other reason is you're seeing a film from nearly 40 years ago now, most stuff doesn't hold up at all. I think the fact it can still get an enjoyable 7 score from a fresh view from an adult actually says a lot about how good it is.

I just saw Ghostbusters 2 (1989) and I have an unpopular opinion, from what I have seen across the internet, I prefer Ghostbusters 2 (1989) to the original Ghostbusters (1984)

The film is pretty stellar; combining some great comedy, solid characters and some genuine scares. It's actually a masterclass on how to work comedic lines into story driven scenes for maximum payoff, and how to give different character various types of humour. Bill Murray might be remembered as 'the funny one' but all the characters- even just a colourful side characters like Janine- get good lines.
Harold Ramis' dry asides and understatements tend to be a favorite of mine.
