"I know you'll never love me..."

Sorry, probably I'm very thick, but to say that Buffy didn't love Spike in Chosen because Spike said she didn't and deliberately choose to ignore several Joss statements that Buffy loves Spike...either I see no difference between bias and interpretation for this particular bangel fan either I need more dictionaries and translated texts. From my POV, the situation repeats in "Awakening" dream sequence (the curse already kicked in, Angel being in pain when calling Buffy's name vs. he remembered Buffy and then loses his soul) I mean, please, be a little objective, the shows were also outside the bangel verse.

And as far as I'm concerned, you're singing to the choir. It's always been my observation that Spuffy shippers seem on the whole to have far less trouble accepting the fact that Buffy loved Angel than Bangel shippers do in admitting that she also loved Spike.

Nope, I'm not suggesting that all. I said I don't necessarily believe that myself. I have stated in other threads that I belive this was Spike's FIRST action that he did more than Buffy's approval, however I've also seen others say otherwise. I'll have to see if I can find a thread but I think even someone who I presume is a 'Spuffy' has said that Spike solely did this because of his love Buffy and that it may not be AS selfless as doing it to save the world.

And just because the others didn't die doesn't mean they didn't give there all, and I don't think the reference to a real life war is very fair either.

Oh yes, you can. Roland Barthes developed a groundbreaking piece of theory called the Death of the Author, which refers to the fact that an author, never has and never will do, alive or dead have the final say on their work. In layman's terms, once they are dead and not able to say what they meant then it's completely open to interpretation but that it shouldn't just be until they are deceased that readers take what they want or feel from their work. Joss has his own interpretation of his work, and I have mine. I don't have to accept everything that Joss says. He's a good enough writer to mean this doesn't have to happen, hence we all have this extensive discussions about it.

Actually, this is ironic, because we were supposed to read that in class last week, and I never got to it (simply too much work!) Little did I know that it might come in handy with my Buffy-related debates! 😉

Once you put something out there in the world (a film or a book or a piece of art) you're accepting the fact that people will interpret it in any way they like, in a way that has meaning to them. I get this. I get that, but I still feel the writers intentions should be taken into account.

ubi4soft, you can talk to me you know, you don't have to refer to me as 'this particular Bangel fan'. 🙂

Aren't we all a little biased anyway? Isn't that WHY we have favourite and 'ships? Because we lean more towards one than the other?

And personally I consider interpreting the text in my own way and not completely accepting everything that Joss says as objective. I don't choose to ignore Joss' statements but I don't accept them all as gospel. Joss says so many different things about every aspect of his shows because it keeps all of us guessing.

And just because my opinion differs from yours doesn't mean I'm biased. I don't think you're biased just because you think otherwise and agree with Joss.

And like I've said many a time, I don't think that Buffy didn't love Spike. I just don't see it as particularly romantic, or him being the love of her life because it doesn't emulate my ideals about love and therefore I struggle to relate to it. I guess I'm just a conventional gal 🙂

I agree, Flannen. It is not a 'rule' that fans have to accept Joss' word as 'last say' (or any author for that matter), yet just as you have chosen not too, I have chose too.

Well, if we are referring to 'bias' as being a form of favoritism, then yes, we're certainly all biased. We all have our favorite characters, scenes, episodes, etc - all which vary greatly person to person. We all see things differently. Some things resonate with some while others simply don't. This is all perfectly awesome and fine.

Yet, I think 'bias' is all too often associated with discrimination and intolerance.

Partiality, on the other hand, is a type of, for lack of a better word, favorable bias. Maybe we could start using this expression instead when asserting our preferences.

So, perhaps I could word it from now on as, "I am partial to Spuffy."

Haha. 😉

Also, if Joss' and the other writers opinions aren't always something you take into consideration as the final word Flannen, then couldn't it be argued that Buffy didn't love Angel? (I'm obviously not saying I believe this, but I'm playing Devil's Advocate).

I mean, Buffy told Angel she loved him and she, well, told Spike too.

Joss has said Buffy loved Angel and Spike.

So, considering he said the same thing about both relationships, and if I took into account the fact that his interpretation doesn't have to be the final say, then don't I have a case that Buffy didn't love Angel? Do you get my point?

At some point, there has to be a final say.

Us Spuffies need something, you know!

lol, how very weird! It's a pretty good read actually. It certainly changed the way I interpret literature/texts.

Yup, absolutely. Of course you have a case. I firmly believe, as I've also said many times before, that I think we build our interpretations of things largely based on our lives, experiences and ideals. It's what helps us to relate to one thing and causes us not to relate to others. IF you didn't think that when Buffy tells Angel she loves him, that she lacks conviction or it feels forced, or she was young; whatever the reason, then that's how you interacted with that scene/s. I wouldn't necessarily be able to understand, in the sense that I might not see it myself, and you sure know I'd debate it into oblivion with you (😉) but I would fully respect your individual insight.

Part of me thinks there should be a final say, and I want to know about it, BUT at the same time, I think that takes a lot of the fun out of being in places like this. I like the fact things are left open. BUT, if there was a final say, I wouldn't necessarily accept it. Even if it that final say was Bangel, I wouldn't want to start thinking other people who think it should have been otherwise were wrong. (This totally makes me think of the Joey/Dawson, Joey/Pacey thing here, where there was a final say!)

I still don't agree with this but I can see why you think it, myself been a very good example! But I don't think my opinion on HOW Buffy loved Spike is solely down to the fact I prefer Bangel. Of course it plays a role, I would be a complete liar and a fraud if I tried to say otherwise, but like I say, another huge part of that is to do with what 'love' means to me personally and what resonates with me. And I don't think that's wrong, or biased. It's just me being honest.

Well, maybe I'll read the article then, possibly over Christmas break.

I was a big Pacey/Joey shipper...so it worked out nicely for me but I can see where people would have been pissed with how that went down, considering how many years Joey and Dawson drew out their epic "are we in love or are we not?" status... 😉

I'm going to be naughty and go ever so slightly off topic

When I was younger it was Joey/Dawson, then I realised that he didn't deserve her. But argument when I was younger was it's 'Dawson's Creek not Pacey's' 😛 But now I'm Joey/Eddie all the way.

Stops breaking the rules but I just had to say it!

Can I just say that I already know I'm totally biased? 😉

People who sail aboard the good ship Spuffy aren't biased. They're just convinced (and correct)
Me too, what can I say? But I also want Buffy to be happy and loved...see, that's where Spike comes in. 😉

Spuffy is by far the superior 'ship, of course.
