Don't you just love how much of an indie actress SMG is? You'd think with her background and acting history from working on Buffy, she'd be working on big movies. Veronika Deserves to Die is probably her most underrated film imo.

I'm happy she didn't sell out as an actress and riding on her success of Buffy by doing mainstream horror films.

Should I see "Possession"? is it any good?

That all depends on your belief on the meaning of the term 'indie'. Those people I have spoken to in the film making industry, and they were lecturers and the implimentors of lectures have said that the term 'indie' refers to independant film maker/ production company. With that in mind, how does an actor become an 'indie' actor?

I don't think of SMG as an indie actress at all. She tried, very hard, to become a big movie star after Buffy ended and she's tailed off in recent years. I mean, The Grudge, the Scoobie-Do series, Scream 2, even ones when she was younger like I know what you did last summer and Cruel Intentions, all of those were major Hollywood productions.

And I mean, Ringer? That was a CW soap opera really, hardly an indie show.

And, I think SMG got kind of typecast, which is a shame. That's happened to plenty of other actors (although to much greater extents) and they took what they could get. I mean, Mark Hamill didn't just vanish from the acting scene post-Star Wars because he wanted to. It was because no one could see him as anything but Luke Skywalker. I think that happened, to a lesser extent, to Sarah as well. Hell, it's happening now with Tom Welling.

Sure, she's had roles in smaller budget films (which is what I think most people think of when they think of an "indie" production) but so have many actors and actresses who have been in huge movies. All those movies, Buffy and Ringer don't really fit that mold.

Ringer was originally an ABC production

To be honest I personally wouldn't say that SMG is an indie actress. I respect her as an actress and it's great that you do as well!

Also I would say her appearances in I Know What You Did Last Summer and Scream 2 were mainstream horrors. It could also be argued that Grudge was mainstream as well.

Cruel Intentions was a huge movie - definitely not an indie flick.

Simply Irresistible and Scooby Doo were equally mainstream as they were terrible films.

Unfortunately for SMG I would say that she hasn't been given the greatest opportunities throughout her career and that she is more of a failed actress than an independent actress.

Interestingly enough I think that if she had perhaps tried to be a more 'indie' film actress that she could have done very well through it.

I mean her career currently not the movies she did in early 00's and the 90's.
The Dark Avenger agrees: I mean her career currently not the movies she did in early 00's and the 90's.

Sorry, but I'm still unsure how her career is indie. I've had a read through her imdb.com career post Buffy and still can't really see anything indie. I can see many things that are decidedly un-indie such as The Grudge, The Grudge 2, American Dad, Ringer, The Simpsons and Robot Chicken but can't see a single independent film on the list.

I'm sorry to sound argumentative, but I don't get it. Could you please explain further why you believe SMG is an actress that works on independent films?

yeah I guess I sort of labeled her wrong. I just thought she was always doing movies like "Veronika Decides to Die"

I get the impression that she's probably financially secure for life (and after seven years as Buffy and a couple of lead roles in commercial films, if she isn't financially secure she only has herself to blame) and takes the roles that interest her and fit in with her family life. If that means offbeat, so be it- I'd be surprised if she hadn't been offered at least a couple of romantic comedies which would have been easy money but no challenge to her professionally.

Romantic comedies would have been a challenge to her, as she has stated in the past that she prefers (via other people) not to laugh on camera, she gets self conscious about that. She has been involved in romantic situations before, on film. Those were mainly in films that could be classified as scary.

I loooved Possession, I definitely reccomend everyone seeing it. I love so many of her movies...The Return is underrated, Veronika Decides To Die, The Air I Breathe & I even love Simply Irresistible, it's a very cute film. I also quite enjoyed Suburban Girl. It wasn't what I thought it would be but grew on me with several viewings. Also, you can't forget Cruel Intentions. She was brilliant in it!!!
