Why does everyone hate him so bad?? Just because he didn't have the supernatural bad boy thing going on does NOT make him boring or any less good for Buffy.

Cue arguments. LOL

I really didn't mind Riley, and I never understood why he is so hated either! Of course he wasn't Buffy's first or even great love, but he was an important part of her growing up and experiencing relationships. Plus, he was an over-all good guy (until he went all vamp-obsessed at the end, but still...)

I completely understood his whole vamp thing toward the end of Season 5... He was hurt and looking for a way to understand Buffy's dark side. Even when he was doing that, I couldn't bring myself to get mad at him; I only felt sad for him. 🙁

I think I've said this before, I used to hate Riley, he really annoyed me, but now, I like him, I feel sorry for the guy, I understand him more now. And he's got cool hair.

Guess I'm the black sheep here, then.

Why does everyone hate him so bad?? Just because he didn't have the supernatural bad boy thing going on does NOT make him boring or any less good for Buffy.
And the fact that he does not have the supernatural bad boy thing going on doesn't make him more good for Buffy, either.
I just don't buy the "Riley is nice and normal so he must be the best boyfriend for Buffy!" theory. Oatmeal is nice and normal but I'd gag if I had to eat it every morning.

Then again, I hate Riley more than most, I'd say. So maybe I should just steer clear of this thread. 😛

I don't really HATE Riley either. I actually didn't mind him the first time I watched the series, but the more I rewatch it, the more he annoys me. I think it's down to Marc Blucas more than anything. He is just as bland as can be - both in terms of appearance and (ESPECIALLY) acting. Yawn. The character of Riley I don't mind really. I can understand and appreciate his story as well as the part he played in Buffy's life. It's just Blucas I can't deal with so well.

oh, Britt, i was just thinking that, *hopes this goes better than the xander thing*

I liked him too, i thought he was best for buffy (not nessacarily her true love, *whispers: Bangel* But I like the guy, he was a little corny, but not tacky, you know. Like Angel with the coat thing or spike with the hair.)

Right, Now I have to leave, as I just expressed Bangel love and that I thought Spike's hair was tacky. You understand why i need to run, i'm sure

Just because he didn't have the supernatural bad boy thing going on does NOT make him boring or any less good for Buffy.

And that has nothing to do with why I don't like him.
Indeed, the bad boy friends are way cooler (aaah.. Spike), but it was interesting for the story at this point for Buffy to have a 'normal' boyfriend. At a time of her life where she lost loads of certainties (growing up, going to colege, everything), a normal steady relationship was what she needed.
No, for me, Riley hating goes on a completely different level, namely that of the character, and how he's played. He's written like cpt. cardboard and Blucas actually plays him like a piece of cardboard. Even the cheese man had more depth. I'm not saying I could do it better, but his character is of Buffy-unworthy simpleness. Sure, they added some layers, first the initiative, than some pills that make him super strong, than when all that's done, he suffers because Buffy doesnt love him like he loves her. It adds something, but not much and it is all seriously predictable.
Well, that was my little rant, please continue ^^
