I met 2005's National American Miss Teen, Samantha Hahn, today. She came to talk to my school. I was very rude about her presense at first, because of preconceived ideas of what a pageant winner is like. I expected her to walk out and tell us how to wear a bathing suit properly, how to throw up your food and not stain your teeth, and find out our ideas on how to make world peace a reality.

I was actually really shocked when she came out. Her way of talking was so unlike a pageant contestant. She messed up her words, forgot where she was, and bumbed into the podium. I could tell her speech wasn't some prewritten b.s. that she'd use to win us (judges) over. She was also really dressed down. She wasn't in her formal dress, with the crown, and 9000 pounds of make up slapped on her face. Once I saw that not all pageant participants are phony, I was a lot more open to listening to what she had to say.

It turns out she had a really rough childhood/adolensence. She was heavily picked on because she was so perfect, and she even had to change schools after a vicious attack when a student stuffed a handful of metal shavings into her face. I got a picture of her and you can't see the scars on her face, but they're air brushed on the picture, and covered up with make up in real life.

She came to my school to talk to us about peer pressure and bullying. She encouraged us to make a stand and stop bullying. It was a very powerful talk she had with us, especially when she relived her past experiences. She was even in tears one point, which made the whole thing so much more real.

After the assembly I went down to talk to her. She's interested in helping people, and so am I . I thought it would be nice to thank her for coming to speak with a school where the term "gay" and the "n" word are common and "ok" to use. I had a small conversation with her, just joking around and she asked me if I wanted an autograph. So, I said yes and she signed a big picture of me. I'll post it later.

PS: she's also gunna be starring in a movie called "Return to Sleepaway Camp" that's a horror movie coming out in 2006. I'm excited!

There's the autograph. It was taken with a camera phone so it's really blurry. It says at the top: "To Mike, Best Wishes." and at the bottom it says "Samantha Hahn xoxo."

cool hero! :bounce:

she sounds like a really great person!!

i like how you've discribed your pre-lecture impretion of beauty queens 🙂 its really well written, and so true(that alot of people look at it that way, i have too...) but usualy the girls who run for those BIG contests(like the one she won, has to be pretty well-rounded, or so i've heard 🙂)

must have been so awful to have someone do that to her(the metaldust...🙁) so shocking to her all the AWFUL stuff people do to others and even at a young age.... i think it's great that people go to schools to talk about bulling! its an important issue, that we need to discus, and then try to get rid of.... '

oprah had a show on bullying last year( might have been earlier this year, but i think it was last year.) where she intervjued this 13 year old kid who was bullied pretty much every day on the school bus, kids even getting pretty violebt beyhond words(hitting and kicking him) 🙁

thanx for posting this Hero! 🙂
