"I Need A Second Front..."

(Actually, I guess this is between Season 4 and Season 5)

Angel heads back to LA to set up Buffy's "Second Front," (and also probably to indulge in some quality brooding time about Spike's new soul)

If you were Angel, what would your preparations be?

I always assumed that the "I need a second front" thing was just a mutual understanding between the two-- an excuse for Angel to not be there.

Buffy didn't want Angel to be there; whether it be because she would be too distracted, or because it "wasn't his fight" to fight, or maybe a more personal reason in concerns for his well-being... it was clear that she didn't like the idea of him sticking around to fight.

To me, it always seemed as though she scrambled for an excuse for him to leave town, and that's what she came up with. She knew that wasn't why she didn't want him there, he knew that wasn't why she didn't want him there, but it worked. They both understood the real reason (whatever it may be-- that's up for debate), and were fine to just leave it the way that they did. I doubt that there were really any intended preparations on Angel's front, in reality. Again, just how I interpreted it! 🙂


But in answer to your question, I would probably gear up. Have an eye on Sunnydale, someone stationed to see it coming and everyone else just waiting for it to come. Grab anyone and everyone that you could, form a makeshift gameplan and get lots of weapons. Dealing with the first, it'd be all I would think to do. You can't defeat the first itself; just its army. And if the gang in Sunnydale couldn't beat that army, I think going at them full force is I would think of trying!

If i was Angel I would have wanted to be on the front lines with Buffy, but if you cant then you get your own weapons out back in LA and band together the gang. It might have helped to get more demons on his side if it had came to that, the whole of the underworld rise up to fight the first in a battle.

Good question.

Angel had all of W&H at his disposal at that point, so I would have had Wes hit the books, had Fred science up some uber-vamp repellent, had Gunn ask the Big Cat for some answers, and then I would have grabbed as many beasties and weapons as W&H had, armed everyone from Lorne to the pencil pushers on the first floor, and hoped nothing got through.

I always thought Buffy's second front idea was a good one. Interpersonal implications aside, there was a real chance that Buffy's General Custer-type plan wasn't going to work. If that happened, then the world was going to be in serious trouble. Who was better equipped than the fang gang to meet that threat?

The amulet that Angel gave to Buffy was meant for Angel to wear and not Spike. The fact that Spike happened to have a soul, was in Sunnydale, happened to be in love with Buffy and willing to do anything for her and was ultimately prepared to give his own life to save her, the scoobies and the potentials is not coincidental - it should have been Angel's job to wear the amulet, but because Buffy sent him away, it fell to Spike to wear - voluntarily or not.

Right but one could hypothesise that this was all intended because if I am not mistaken it pretty much was Lindsey who made sure Spike came to LA so that he could royally screw Angel in what ever dastardly plan he had brewing which was clearly very in depth and which he could not do if Angel was all firey. One could say that he made sure it was Spike who wore the amulet through a multitude of ways thusly ensuring his return. Could Lindsey have somehow coerced the actions of those in Sunnydale to ensure this happened or simply count on Buffy to turn Angel away? Hm...................I wonder.................

Eve certainly implies that the amulet found it's intended target all along too - and she was knee-deep in the whole amulet/lindsey thing too. Although how trustworthy she (and her information is), is highly debatable....

OK, my 'Second front' would be on the basis that Buffy failed(not having W&H as his help) AND also deal with some issues I actually have with Angel(I might borrow other peoples ideas).

Angel would be leader, co-ordinator.

I would have him have Wesley hit the books to do his darndest to find something on the First.
Fred to assist.

Gunn, I would send him out to locate EVERYONE that Angel has helped in the past. They need an Army and Angel has pretty much amassed one through all the time he has helped the hopeless - they have hope now, a reason to fight.

I would then have him contact Riley. I want the Initiative PLUS all that damned fire power. Agree/disagree with method, they ARE an army with access to so much.

Why hasn't Angel ever tried to find another contact to TPTB since the Oracles were killed. I would also research this - there has to be a way OTHER than The Visions.

I would then have David Nabbit brought it. Muscle and Weaponry - not BUT he has money AND I wouldn't wonder that since we last saw him he has now more connections.

I would then, and only then, seek out the Senior Parners. Determine IF they were in league with the First OR if instead the amulet just didn't work. It would be an alliance of necessity IF they weren't assisting the First - but I would be wary of them none the less.

I pretty much agree with what BotD put.
As WR&H wanted to be No:1 and the First wanted to be No:1. I'd have thought Angel would have known it was to wipe out the First.

The idea of a second front was to stop the First; which he did.
Good battle tactic...use one enemy to kill another enemy. Problem is it wasn't his tactic, it was WR&H's, so, did he know that and he was helping WR&H?.

Another issue is.... the amulet came from WR&H who Angel knew to be evil, so why did Angel give the amulet to Buffy at all?

On a personal level, if your enemy gave you the amulet, for you to give it to a friend you liked, to help her. Would you believe them? or would you chuck it in the bin?
