What is says in the title really - I need some new music to listen to but I'm rubbish with searching for it so anyone got some bands/artists they can recommend?

Most of my music taste is mellow stuff, some of my favourites at the moment are Kate Voegele, Matt Nathanson, Gavin DeGraw, Our Lady Peace, MGMTs.

So does anyone have any recommendations similar to those so I can widen my music library and stop listening to the same two albums over and over again? 😛

Just names is fine, I can have a mosey for them on MySpace and stuff, signed or unsigned, I'm not too fussed.

I'd love to help ya out, but I'm currently into Rock/Metal. :p
I really, really adore Marit Larsen right now, she is too adorable. "Ten Steps" and "If A Song Could Get Me You" are two songs I'd recommend, although I've grown a little tired of the second one since it's on the radio here all. the. time. But it's still a nice song. Do you know The Raconteurs? It's a side project of Brendan Benson (who's awesome in his own right too), Jack White and two other dudes I don't know and they're simply amazing.

I check those out, thanks lovely!
You can always use Last.fm and search on an artist and get suggestions of similar ones. Can be a good way to find new ones. And you can do it on the first page. You don't have to become a member.

I've heard of last.fm but I've never used it, but I will now, thanks!
Mellow? Ok I can do that 😉 Anything in brackets is a song you should look out for)

Damien Rice
Glenn Hansard
Ray Lamontagne
A Fine Frenzy
Joshua Radin ("When I find you, I'll find me")
BellX1( "South of her shoulder, west of her spine")
Ryan Adams
Tom Baxter
She & Him
Sarah Bareillis ("Gravity")
Patty Griffin ("Let Him Fly" and she does a stunning version of "Moon River")
Rachel Yamagata (She does a song with Ray Lamontagne called "Duets" that is gorgeous)
Fisher "I will love you"
Pink (She is known for her up tempo songs but her albums are full of these beautiful, mellow, classy tunes. Check out "Crystal Ball, Glitter in the Air, Dear Mr. President and The One that Got Away")

Oh, Justin Timberlake doesn't usually play this type of music but he did a version of Hallelujah with Matt Morrison (also worth checking out) and it was really gorgeous.

And if you are interested in some absolute quality and aren't put off about their age then people like

Cat Stevens (He is AMAZING...I defy anyone to listen to "Peace Train" and not find it both current and relavent)
Don McLean (Vincent *sob*)
Van Morrison

Well, aren't you just awesome! Thanks very much hun!

Wow, nice cover...
Marshall Chapman?
Leonard Cohen? His "Live in London" is no bad place to start if you're a newbie.
Ray Wilson? I'm in love with his "Live & Acoustic" at the moment.

Are you on Spotify? I have unused invites (4 to be excact).

ETA: All your artists were new names to me, but since most of my music is mellow I just picked a name and did a Spotify-search. Within four bars of the first song, Nathanson was given the official stamp of approval: My four-year-old came to me and demanded to dance with me around the living room.

Woo! I'm in love with Nathanson's latest album, it's beautiful!
Did you try Bethany Joy Galeotti's band yet, Everly? She also has some awesome solo stuff.

Bryan Greenberg, who played Jake on OTH, has some great music too, as well as Tyler Hilton.

oh she has a band? awesome, she has such a great voice

Yup, listened to Everly today. I really like them, they've got a really eerie feel to them but Galeotti's voice is just amazing so checked her newer stuff out too.

Bryan Greenberg! YOU STAR! I've been meaning to look for him for ages, I loved the songs Jake played. And yup, also looked up Tyler Hilton today too. He's a bit hit and miss sometimes but the 'hit' songs were ones I loved. There's one that really sounded like a Chris Keller song and it made me laugh! 😛

Now, all I need is money to download all this stuff...*sigh*

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions, I'll be checking them out. They're good company when I'm writing essays 🙂

And miromurr, I've looked at Spotify but it confused me. Is it free and do you HAVE to be invited?

Getting an invite is the easy way into free spotify, yeah. Once you're in, you can choose to pay a tenner or so a month to have it advert-free, or you can accept some degree of advertising and have music for free. It's easy to use once you get a hang of it, PM me your e-mail and I'll send you an invite.

I am sooooo checking out Bryan Greenberg!

Let me know what you think, his got a great voice. And, um, he's pretty hot too ;)
Mellow? Huh. Well, the stuff I listen mostly rock/pop/dance new wave and classic rock, mostly stuff like The Cure, Depeche Mode, Echo and the Bunnymen, and New Order, The Smiths, The Doors, etc.

My ex used to listen to a lot of mellow stuff, though; try Cat Power, The Chameleons UK, Coldplay, Death Cab for Cutie, Imogen Heap, John Mayer, Radiohead.

As for female singers, I like Jewel and Taylor Swift. Both have pretty and slow songs.

John Mayer was suggested on amazon too (as I'd been seeing how much the albums cost) so I might have a look at him.

I've always been a fan of Radiohead, not so much the new stuff though. They went all experimental and weird. Give me Fake Plastic Trees and High and Dry over the new stuff any day 😉

lol, and before anyone thinks I'm really boring and miserable, I don't JUST listen to mellow stuff but it's the only sort of music that I can just put on however I'm feeling and enjoy it. I have to be in the mood to listen to other genres.

But, I've fallen in love with music again today so thanks to everyone for their suggestions! 😀

You're welcome! Have fun. Finding new music is great fun. Yesterday my sister and I spent like three hours at this CD store looking for used Cds...lol.

Ya know I really try to get into John Mayer, some of his stuff is perfect for chilling out, Your Body is a Wonderland stands out, but he being an absolute douchelord always puts me off him. He sings in this Lucas Scott deep raspy voice that sounds all sincere and then he does interviews where he calls Jessica Simpson "sexual napalm".

He just ruins the whole illusion!

Sorry, you lost me as soon as I read the words Lucas Scott...man, I have issues. lol

I haven't got as far as as John Mayer yet...I'll let you know what I think when I do. I'd heard of him but had no idea he was a singer...

And Joan, you're right finding new music IS fun but I just hardly ever reach out to find it. I'm too stuck in my ways, lol.

lol, I don't know either. I've heard one that was on some compilation I had but can't remember what it's called. I might recognise some if I hear them but I don't recognise any names...

Am I correct in thinking he was in a band before going solo or did I make that up?

Willow-Tree
You made that up LOL
Aha i've never heard any of them you just mentioned Flannen, 😛.
You should listen to Damien Rice, his songs are a little depressing but beautiful. I've loved him for years.
I really can't help ya though, i only listen to R&B stuff these days. aha.
I'm just after downloading a lot of the dollhouse tracks though, they are amazing. 🙂

Ermmmm Sia: Blow it all away, breathe me, Girl you lost to cocaine, Don't bring me down.
Fiona Apple: Shadow Boxer, Paper Bag, Sullen Girl, Pale September.
I like Paramore: Emergency, We are Broken, Miracle, Pressure.
