Ok, so here is the thing...

I do alot of work from home for a second job I do for no pay(which really sucks, damn externships!!) and I have to use the internet like, all the time. The last time I logged on to my computer was before I went to work. Everything was fine. Then I come home and my internet isn't working. I checked to make sure it wasn't my modem or my router. and I'm pretty sure it isn't the cable company because my roommates internet is working just fine, and I can use the internet on my phone too. I even tried using a different web browser. Nothing seems to tell me how I can fixed this. The only way I can use the internet is if I use it on a guest account on my computer, which, is really lame because I hate having to go back and fourth between accounts.

I'm not very computer tech saavy...so here is my question...

Can anybody PLEASE help me?! I desperately need this so I can continue my dolphin research.

🙁

Are any of your housemates tech saavy? My old housemate used to block my laptop from connecting to the internet so that his download speeds would go better, sounds like yours could have done the same perhaps?

My other advice is from the IT crowd, 'try turning it off and on again' surprisingly this has worked for me before too.

I am by no means an expert, but there is certain spyware that will reduce, and possibly prevent internet access from programs other than itself. It also blocks outbound network connections.

Does your PC have any spyware/adware removal programs on it that you can run?

hahahahahaha oh lord this is going to be tricky, I can feel it!

I tried the whole "turn on, turn on" thing for like an hour. It didn't work. MY roommates are not tech saavy either. They are gay boys going into drama, whaddya expect haha

adware?spyware? have no idea what that is lol

The only thing I know is that I have an illegal copy of windows xp running for over 2 years and this is the first time this has happened. And I wasn't even the one that installed this copy!! i have no idea how to do that =/

i've been meaning to buy a macbook pro but everytime i have the money for it, something bad happens and i have to use it 🙁

Basically you need to check if you have any viruses on your computer and certain viruses can stop you gettting online.

grrr that doesn't make any sense...if it were a virus, wouldn't it stop my entire computer from getting online, rather than just my account? =/

So your computer can still get online, its just your account on the computer that cannot?

Thats new to me, never heard of that happening before. All i can suggest is that you move all your documents to the guest account and delete your old account and then just make the guest account into your new account.

Sam thing had happened to me, I couldn't get online or run a virus check from my account, i had to make a new one, then run the virus check and that fixed it.

The virus can be connected to 1 account only, cuz it may only startup when that particular account is opened.

this is seriously stressing me out =/ i don't have any antivirus software or anything like that.

i know my friend used to do remote assistance but he was pretty much wiped off the face of the earth. does anyone know how to do that?

ok I was able to transfer all my music and importand research files onto the other account and managed to delete the one that was acting up. thank you guys for your help! lets see how long this will last lol

If you're using Windows you really should get some antivirus protection - I've used AVG free edition before AVG Free - Free Antivirus Software for Windows 7 | Virus Protection at NO cost!
and I'm sure there are other free programs that will do the job...and a decent firewall would be an idea - Zone Alarm is a good free one that I've used - Best Free Firewall Software for Download: Personal Firewall by ZoneAlarm
...also a spyware checker like Adaware or Spybot S&D is a good move 🙂
Security software is a must have for a Windows PC...get the Mac ASAP is my (biased) advice 🙂

ahhh thanks so much!! i have AVG and Avast but sadly I don't know how to use them. i think i'll play around with it a little.

trust me when i'm done saving for a mac i'm not letting anything get in the way of me buying it!
