Howdy and hey, BB folks. :: tu ::

Back in 2004 I posted a thread much like this one.
That roster of members proved most helpful and I gained new knowledge of good current music.
My tastes in music are eclectic. I've listened to a lot of it, from any era, and from many different genre categories. It was indeed a passion of mine....but recently due to job and basically other life matters, I have ONCE AGAIN fallen out of touch with the music world. There are so many different bands and solo artists out there appearing and dissapearing at a rabbit's pace....as well as some older bands that I never knew existed until now.

I am wanting to re-familiarize myself....get back up to date with today's music. It occurs to me that a lot of you young folks on here on the BB listen to a great deal of music and are very knowledgeable about it.
What are the current bands and artists that I may seek out and listen to...as I am so tired of being out of the loop? Any assistance at all would be most graciously appreciated. Don't be shy now. Dazzle me with your musical accumen, please.

I don't really know what oldies your are into but some of my favs are Otis Redding, Etta James, Don McLean, Jim Croche, The Eagles, Carol King, Cat Stevens, Joni Mitchell.
 
Oh, oldies are not a problem for me. That's all I manage to listen to these days. 😛

I listen to an oldies Rock station that has me overloaded on Rush and Led Zeppelin. It's the new, current stuff that's giving me a problem. I don't know what's out there. Timbaland I'm familiar with...except he only makes "eh! eh!" sounds whenever he's featured on somebody else's song. I need actual singing. 😛

Lol, ok, like I said, I'm only listening to oldies...and that's because I don't know what NEW stuff to listen to. I got oldies covered, so no need to give me any of those.

I am familiar with Britney, Timberlake, Rihanna, Timba ("EH! EH!") Land, Fergie, etc. 😛

List everything else that's new and current, from Metal, Rock, Pop, ANYTHING. :: tu :: (But please, no Rap music).
 
You really don't kow what your missing ruling out rap. It really has been responsible for some of the finest music of the last 20-30 years.

Voice wise Christina Aguilera, Alicia Keyes and Amy Winehouse really have it locked down. You really won't find anything better.

Bands that are worth a listen, the ones I metioned already plus Snow Patrol, Foo Fighters, Stained, Linkin Park, Greenday, My Chemical Romance, Dashboard Prophets, Oasis, Fallout Boy, Gym Class Heroes, Jet, Kasabian(cannot recommend them enough!), Placebo, Muse and the Kaiser Chiefs.

Male singers, John Legend, Ray LaMontagne, Robin Thicke, Damien Rice and Chris Brown

I did like Robing Thicke for a bit....but his non-stop falsetto is a little off-putting after a while. I'm learning to deal....
Like Old Master 111, I listen to a lot of the older stuff. I could point out that Led Zeppelin have just started a tour. They have John Bonham's son on drums.
As for modern day groups I'd have to go with WOLFMOTHER

I like threads like these, because I’m always looking for something new to keep my headphones warm. But please, if you’re cheerleading for your favourite band, tell me why. Make an argument, or a comparison or something to win us over. A big list of band names just leaves me cold, and you‘ll never wring a discussion out of it. 😀

Wilfully obscure indie stuff? I mean... it's not entirely mainstream, so it won't get you back in the loop with all the cool normal kids… but you might impress tedious indie nerds like me with some prudent namedrops. 😀

...are frequently, and unfairly, dubbed the British White Stripes. Unfairly because A) They don't sound like the White Stripes much, and B) I like this song more than anything the White Stripes ever did. They’re based in Brighton, and their debut album will be out this year. Hoping it’s a good ‘un,

The National
… are, for my taste, a little overhyped. But I’ve got friends who are absolutely psycho for them. Sort of an Americana flavoured Joy Division type sound. Their album, Boxer, is good, but many would argue it’s great, so I’ll throw them in anyway.

…sounds like a fantasy Balkan gypsy band, songs about the Rhineland, things stuff like that. Only the guy is from New Mexico. All weird trumpets and ukeleles, but a million times more listenable than that description sounds. Gorgeous.

… on the other hand, are real life gypsy punks. Kickass gypsy punks who’ve performed on stage with, of all people, Madonna. I really can’t describe their music. Um. But this is what it sounds like:

...is a hobo bluesman the likes of which they're not supposed to make anymore. He was the surprise hit of Glastonbury, kicking all ass with only a mangy old three stringed guitar and a box for company.

… was nominated for, and should have bloody won, the Mercury music prize. Spooky, dreamy vocals and a genuinely brilliant video more Donnie Darkoey than Donnie Darko was.

The Arcade Fire.
.... aren't obscure anymore. But they still make music worth getting extra ears for. Powerful, and I really mean that.

I know people who've flown the Atlantic to see this band. Rational, sensible people, who don't pull massive paychecks or have private planes to keep in business or anything. The last time I saw them play, I ripped a muscle in my ribcage and spent two weeks off my face on painkillers, bolt upright and barely able to breathe.
And it was still worth it.

. They played our venue last summer and their manager actually had me videotape the show for them lol. Which in the end sucked because I so wanted to dance during that one. Really fab. (Actually that last vid on their MySpace is us. Let me just say, it's really hard to stand perfectly still for an hour lol)

I am still hung up on the Beatles! I love Across the Universe because it was a new take on some really great music. I loved the music in Juno (the soundtrack truly is GREAT) especially All I Want is You by Barry Louis Polisar and A Well Respected Man by The Kinks. I also really love Jack Johnson. So yeah I am not really the best person to ask about the popular music right now but I listen to some really interesting stuff for now.

Have you seen this?

I highly recommend that website for finding weird new bands to like, too. Takeaway Shows, a wide variety of indie acts performing in unusual spots around France. Cool to see bands you know in a new light, or ones you've not heard doing their thang without any set dressing or whatever.

The Final Fantasy and Arcade Fire ones are especially good. Final Fantasy plays a violin and sings while literally running through the streets of Paris.

There are a couple of young female singers I've noticed since your last thread...I was the one pushing the Scissor Sisters btw - whatever happened to them? 😉...Kate Nash (excellent version of Christmas Wrapping on her myspace site btw) and Amy MacDonald are worth checking out IMO...as well as lovely Lily Allen, who was mentioned above...and apparently I was at school with the father of one of the Klaxons (we got into a fight during a football match after an uncompromising tackle from me on him...that would be proper football, as opposed to the gridiron version, which I believe you colonial fellas prefer 😉 - I know nothing about their music however 🙂) Linkage below, "fill yer boots" as they say in Yorkshire 🙂 -
