I dont get the whole first evil thing... First, how did buffy's re-living give the first the oppertunity to attack buffy? She's died and been braught back before and the first didn't strike then... And why did it want to wipe out the line of slayers? It acted like it feared the potentials... Basically the whole thing confuses me... Everything about T.F.E

Yeh me too i didnt get it either, where you quoting buffy when you said i dont get the whole first evil thing when she says i dont get the whole graduation thing, if you did lool, if you didnt then im sad!!

I asked the question a few months ago and to be honest no one really knew the answer so i just make my own story up. Only one person knows how it really works..Joss and he hasnt given an in-depth explanation yet

She wasn't brought back with magic the first time. In the beginning of season 6, when Buffy is brought back, it's kinda like she becomes a new Buffy, it's not at all the same as in Prophecy Girl. In my opinion this is where the slayer line went back from Faith to Buffy, which is a huge thing, and does change a lot in the slayer line. Not exactly sure how it works but I think this is what Beljoxa's eye means when it says this made the change that gave the First the oppertunity to try to wipe out the slayer line.

I guess that The First Evil is always trying to get evil to take over the world. Without a slayer (or two) that would be a lot easier to do. I don't think the First feared the potentials, but of course they are the next generation so they need to be killed.. Without them, no new slayers..

I agree with ChosenOne. You pretty much have to make your own story up. That's the thing that irritates a lot of people about Season 7. They give you just enough info to create a theory, but never any black and white explanation. They rely on you to try to connect the dots. It does make for some lively discussion on message boards, but can be frustrating. Here's my theory on how it works.

The First appears in Amends. He has some plan that involves a slayer and a souled vampire. He tries to corrupt the vampire and wants the slayer alive.

In Season 7 the plan remains the same, but with a different souled vampire.

We know there is a prophecy saying a souled vampire will have a pivotal role in the coming apocalypse. We assume that applies only to the Senior Partners apocalypse, but really the Apocalypse is the one that works. This why the Senior Partners ultimately sabotage The First's plans. They don't want to see it's apocalypse become The Apocalypse.

So in The First's scheme it has one part in place. A souled vampire.

Once you know The First is paying attention to prophecies, you can extrapolate he may know of the coming of a second souled vampire. This is why Angel's life or death in Amends is not vital to it's plans.

Next, why does The First need the slayer? Beljoxa's eye tells us it has something to do with a disruption in the slayer line. Anya tells us this disruption happened when Buffy was magically resurrected in Season 6. At this point we know things have changed, so how have things changed?

Buffy, the scoobs, and The First tell us the slayer line can now pass at least through Buffy. It might also need to pass through Faith, but The First doesn't seem concerned about that.

The First also is looking for the Scythe. We know the Scythe can control how the slayer line is passed on. I'm going to assume in order for it's magic to work it has to be passed through the Slayer. This is possibly why Willow had to be situated directly above the Hellmouth.

We also know The First wants to be turned into flesh. In order to do this he insinuates he has to tip the scales of good and evil.

OK so it's time to put all the pieces together. The First needs the Scythe and the Slayer. He doesn't want the scythe, because it "slices, dices and makes Juliene Preacher", he wants it for the component of passing the slayer line. In order to do that he needs the slayer. In order to get the slayer on board he needs her to become evil. The easiest way to do that would be to vamp her, but no ordinary vampire could get close enough to do it. He needs a souled vampire.

The First's plan was to do exactly what Buffy ended up doing in Chosen. Create an army of slayers, then turn them evil and into an army of anti-slayers. Or possibly it simply didn't want a slayer guarding the Hellmouth. Either way the scales between good and evil could be tipped in evil's favour, and The First could become flesh. Before it could do that it had to make sure there was no network of watchers or watcher trained potentials that could interfere with it's plan. Thus all the dead watchers and potentials.

The First Evil's plans never really included a resurrected Slayer and a souled vampire. The First Evil knew that good and evil would become even more balanced (the presence of thousand of Slayers worldwide) due to a resurrected Slayer and a souled vampire - which is why it went after Angel in S3. After Angel left, it figured that balance would not be reinforced . . . until Buffy was resurrected for a second time in S6 and Spike became souled.

The First decided to make its own plans to upset that balance. By killing off the Potentials and starting an apocalypse, its goal was to manipulate and lead Buffy to that scythe, so it could wield it through her. Or get rid of Spike as an ally of Buffy's one way or the other. That is why it tried to manipulate Spike into siring Buffy in "Sleeper", if Buffy didn't kill him for killing off the town's numerous citizens. It even tried to use Robin Wood into getting rid of Spike.

Thanks to Buffy, the Slayer line, along with the balance of good and evil was redefined (the idea of one Slayer, amidst thousands or millions of vamps, demons, etc. did seem ludicrous). Thanks to Spike's soul, the Sunnydale Hellmouth was closed and the First's plans to change the world's dimensions ruined. Of course, Angel's attack on the Circle of the Black Thorn probably gave the First hope, since the attack spurred W&H to make that last and probably catastrophic attack on L.A.

great theory- really makes sense
The magic brought Buffy back vulnerable, that's why Spike could hit her even with his chip. Something in her changed and therefore something in the slayer line changed when she was brought back to lfie. The First was taking advantage of Buffy's new weakness.

good insight. :)
What I don't really get is how killing all the known potentials would wipe out the slayer line. Wasn't the rule that the slayer would be the next noblest girl in the world, so would The First have to murder all the women in the world to wipe out the slayer line?

Killing off all potentials was simply a distraction, concocted by the First. It wanted Buffy distracted, so it could eventually lead Buffy to the scythe. It finally achieved this goal by bringing Caleb into Sunnydale. Who did Caleb attack upon his arrival? A potential. He didn't bother to kill her . . . just injur her in order to attract Buffy's attentions. His words about having something that belongs to her, led Buffy to the winery and the scythe. The First knew that Buffy would be inclined to attack the Hellmouth, once she had the scythe. It failed to stop her from changing the Slayer line, but the First figured it would still have a chance, once the battle commenced. It did not count on Buffy having the strength of character to decline its offer enter her body, like it did Caleb's. Nor did the First count on Spike wearing the amulet that really destroyed its plans.

I'm going to choose to disagree with Vampire slayer, and say to me, this doesn't make sense.

It leaves too many questions unanswered.

Why did The First's original plan include wanting Buffy and Spike alive? Why did it originally prefer to have Angel alive?

Why did it try to kill Faith? If it's plan was to corrupt the slayer to activate the slayer creating properties of the scythe, why not Faith. Wouldn't it be considered easier to corrupt someone who's already been corrupted, and if the slayer line passes through Faith, wouldn't she be the natural choice to activate those properties of the scythe?

More precisely if Faith is the slayer, and the First needs the Slayer to activate the power in the scythe, why did it try to kill her?

Why did The First have to wait till Season 7 to attack?

What exactly was the "disruption in the Slayer line" Beljoxa's eye spoke of?

Why do Giles and Anya believe the disruption was caused as a result of Buffy being resurrected in The Bargaining?

Same thing for me...I was puzzled.
Not sure..but I always thought it was Buffy's destiny to die in the "Gift"..she wasn't suppose to be brought back..especially by magic..so I guess by bringing her back..there was a huge inbalance..between good vs. evil
