I am obsessed with Spike/Spuffy. Like, unhealthily so. Sometimes I can't even re-watch BTVS because I get so emotionally attached to the characters and relationships, especially this one. REALLY. Can anyone else relate? I've never had a show affect me this much.

I can definitely relate. And I have no idea why. I've decided just to accept it and move on with my life. Would you like to start a club? I'm sure @cryptwarmer will also be a charter member.

I totally understand. BTVS came into my life at a very tumultuous time and hit me on a lot of different levels. S6 was really a roller coaster for me because I had had a near death experience and had felt and gone through some of the issues that Buffy was dealing with (smaller scale of course).

There are so many issues and character types etc on BTVS and so well written that it just sucks people in.

And then there is Spike...Seriously? He's played by an incredible actor, he has the best lines, he's hotter than it should be legal to be and he has so many facets to his personality that it's hard not to identify with some of them and fall in love with the rest.

Or is it just me that feels that way?

When I feel lonely, or lost or depressed, I turn to my friends...in this case my friends are these characters who I've known for years, identify with, enjoy, and I can count on. They are real to me, we've been through a lot together. I can feel whatever I need to feel with them. I can laugh and cry with them.

It's like reading and re-reading a beloved book, or listening to a song over and over, in this case they are characters on a television show. Good art touches us deeply and becomes a way for us to touch base with and process feelings.

And it's wonderful to have imaginary friends. It just is. I don't know why some people ever gave theirs up in the first place! But it's never too late to pick up new ones along the way.

Ooh, it's so good to know I'm not alone in these crazy feelings. Haha.

It really is incredible writing and hard to remember that these characters aren't real people because you love them and identify with them so deeply. Imagine how amazing it would be to experience life in the Buffyverse with them. Especially Spike. Ya feel?

I feel. Just a word of warning though there are some here who do not share this view point. Apparently you either love him or hate him. I don't get that myself because although I have favourite characters and less favourite characters I don't really hate any of them. I can remember being really annoyed by Dawn on first watch through but over time I kind of got over that.

I can't say James Marsters would be my ideal type to be attracted to in real life but there is something about the way he plays
Spike. It's in all those little head tilts and showing his tongue and expressing his love with his eyes. I've seen him in other things and he just a nice looking guy but as Spike and as Captain John Hart he's on fire. I guess it's true, pretty is as pretty does and super hot is all just bad boy attitude, swagger, and leather. The accent doesn't hurt.

They are more real to us than most of the people we encounter on an average day. We know them better. We have been with them through all sorts of experiences in their lives, and know their personal issues. And if they disappeared we'd feel a greater loss than if most of the folks we pass by in a day disappeared.

I've fantasized about being in the Buffyverse...sadly I don't think I'd last a day...but if I was lucky Spike would be the one to take me out and at least I've had had his lips on my neck when I died....

Did I ever tell you about my dream a while back where he was cooking with me in my mom's kitchen?

Spike is sexy (to me) and fun to fantasize about. I watch the show to be entertained. He makes me happy. When I rub brain cells together and analyze his character he's all kinds of wrong, so it's really good I'll never meet him in real life and throw myself shamelessly at him and have to deal with the consequences. Instead I get to watch poor Buffy have to deal with the consequences.

then there is the other side of the coin...JM is so darn sexy in real life...seriously, the man makes my eyes hurt just to look at him.

All of them. Season 7 was not a favorite of mine (the whole tone felt weirdly different) and I think souled Spike was kind of a factor there. He felt slightly off, but mostly because of the shift in tone, not the character. I love the humor of S4 Spike, the new love of S5, the passion of S6, and his speech in Touched in S7. So, basically everything. I think one of the things all Spike fans agree on is that his evolution (without losing anything on the way) is the best part of his role on Buffy.

The scene where he sees Buffy for the first time after her resurrection is a good representation of my favorite Spike.

I was obsessed by Spuffy during the show, but I've recently started reading the comics and now I'm even more obsessed, if that's possible. Spike and Buffy's relationship is why I joined this site, I needed to speak with people who felt the same. I love the characters of Spike and Buffy seperately, but their chemistry together is amazing and elevates them both

I have to stand up as being a Spikophile who doesn't feel that his evolution is the best part of his role. I would have been as happy as pie had he stayed a Big Bad.

His soul made me gag.

I think the best part of his role is that he's funny, pragmatic, and is just "out there" all the time, full speed ahead no matter what he does. Until his soul came along and he got all with the discerning what was proper behavior.

S5 Ats he got more of his swagger back while still having a soul. THAT was a good Spike. The episode where he gets his hands cut off. I like him in that a lot.

This is exactly me too. Once season 10 Spuffy got hot and heavy again I started watching You Tube videos of them and then searching around the internet I came across BB and thought - oooooh a place to talk about what I love! lol

I am loving Spuffy in the comics. I get the trade paperbacks, so am always a bit behind, but they are looking like a well adjusted loving couple, after all they've been through I think that's pretty amazing and I am loving it!

I love Spuffy and I'm not afraid to admit it. Yes, their relationship is weird, toxic, sexually charged and violent, but it makes for interesting viewing. As soon as I saw them in Something Blue, even under the effect of magic, I could just see the spark between them. It's still one of my favourite Spuffy eps, because the chemistry between them is so good. Sarah & James just bounce off each other so naturally.

ah, the bouncing.....
Well, after Angel ended I stayed away from the Buffyverse and the fandom for more than 10 years, I didn't even watch my DVDs, or bought the ones that were missing (S6 and S7). I think life got in the way, the show stopped airing here, there wasn't anymore the Yahoo! group I used to post...

Then, in 2013, I was searching for shows or movies to see, and I realized that my cable company had Buffy S7 available, and I started watching some episodes - and BOOM, it all came back: Buffy, Angel, Spuffy. I really thought I had gotten over it, but apparently not... 😀 And then, I ended up here and reading the comics. And I finally bought S6 and S7, of course.

I think the same would happen if I had the chance to watch Highlander: The Series again - I loved it, but this show just vanished from TV and I don't have the DVDs (and neither the will to spend money on them now).

You're definitely not alone! I'm a hardcore fangirl for Spuffy. Buffy was the show that got me to venture into fandom in the first place, and Spuffy was the first fictional couple I have ever 'shipped. I still to this day have not found a show I care about as much as Buffy (Supernatural comes close), and haven't even come close to finding another couple on TV I find as fascinating as Spuffy.

I too identify deeply with Spike and Buffy as characters, and their relationship is also one I can relate too as well.

Feel free to sing your Spuffy love loud and clear here! But watch out, because Spike haters abound on this board.

This is exactly how I feel about James, too - he's definitely not my type - I don't go for blondes - but there is something about the way he plays Spike that makes him attractive. For me, the confidence is sexy, and Spike has that in spades.

It's so weird that people are split on this subject so much. I do appreciate Spike's character and adored him in seasons 2 and 4. I also think James Marsters is just a superb actor and I would have liked Spike to stay in Buffyverse - just not in the relationship way he was. I genuinely don't think Spike is attractive and think him and Buffy are all wrong. I do on the other hand feel strongly about Buffy and Angel. Wonder what it is that divides people on this?!

Their relationship was interesting, and I hated that it got so violent and toxic...which is insane to say because before S6 it was violent, but in a Slayer/Vampire way. It was another ball game when it got violent and toxic on a personal level.

One thing about S6 and Spuffy is that it drew me into the relationship because I totally understood Buffy's position. Being attracted to someone who is bad for you, and staying in a relationship that is bad for you. Because I am wildly attracted to many things about Spike, even while recognizing what a train wreck he is emotionally. So as I watched, I was torn myself and dealing with my own feelings about why I liked this guy so much when there was so many things about him that were just wrong.

Heck, if I was her I wouldn't have wanted to give him up yet...she had to because they'd gone to the bad place and there was no coming out of that without some sort of massive reordering.

I have the luxury of being able to enjoy all the things I like about him without having to live with the consequences, so I get to enjoy my happy fantasy from my comfy seat.

After DB as Angel and MB as Riley, neither of which were very good actors, it was hard not to cheer on Spuffy because JM is such a great actor. The character just pulled me in because he was so real. It never felt like I was watching someone act a part, it was as if Spike actually exists. It's hard not to get emotionally pulled in by that.

Sometimes I felt like it was a car wreck I couldn't take my eyes off of.

But pre Spuffy I was the same way about Spike. He drove into Sunnydale, stepped out of that car, my jaw dropped and I couldn't look away, he was a compelling character from the get go. I never had to warm up to him.

A great actor makes a ton of difference. I never had to warm up to or come round to accepting Willow or Buffy either. The acting made them real right out of the starting gate.

For me I fell for Spike the moment he turned towards Dru in School Hard and went from gameface to human in the process. I couldn't believe how beautiful he looked. Talk about contrast.

What I rapidly grew to like about his character was that he turned into a sort of Chimera of male of female traits. Often playing more a female role in his relationship with Buffy. The dirty little secret that the other person used, but wished to hide. The overtly emotional character who sometimes couldn't help but wear his heart on his sleeve.

The fact he had so many human like failings made him more 'alive' to me then some of the human characters.

The way he turned his personality like that was amazing, and his entire face would change too. Every tiny muscle, and both aspects of his personality so convincing...he is so compelling
I also thought of him as having more of the female traits and found that very interesting. Everything about Spike was a contradiction that just made you want to try and figure him out. It was so funny how he always wanted to talk and be open and Buffy was all stay inny. Not my life experience! Tough as nails slayer slayer who was also tender and romantic. I also think a big part of it was how I felt so sorry for him, he was such an outsider, the baby brother to Angel, Dru's second choice after Angel, not a demon, not a human....it just gave me the feels. And he was always trying so hard to find his place in the world, you have to admire the effort. And I think a lot of that did come from good acting. I don't know if just anybody could have played Spike and made me really feel for a souless killer.

JM MADE that character. I think anyone else would have overplayed him and made him obnoxious and totally unbelivable. Another actor and Spike would have been dead in five episodes as planned.
