Hello, all 🙂 This is my first post on these forums, so I hope it's in the right place...

I used to watch Buffy years ago, and now I want to get one of the seasons on DVD partly for sentimental reasons, and partly because I've always loved the Spike character in the show.

My question is, which season should I get?

I know Spike doesn't appear until season two, but I don't want to get one of those seasons where he makes brief and short appearances.

I want the good stuff -- episodes where he figures prominently as a developed character, and where the focus is on his relationship with Buffy. From what I've read, season 5 or 6 would probably be best for what I'm looking for.

But I can only afford to buy just one season, for now. Which do you suggest?

Welcome!
Well, if you can only get one, and Spike is what you're looking for, S7 is probably the way to go. He's a main character in S6, but my favorite Spike stuff comes in S7. Plus, you get the ending to the series.

I guess that depends on what kind of Buffy/Spike relationship you're after.
If you want the 'just realising he has a thing for her' go for season 5, if you want 'they're sleeping together he says he loves her but she pretty much hates him mixed with Buffy's depression' go for season 6 or if you want the gradual beginning of what could be a 'healthy relationship', go for season 7.
It all just depends on what you'd like to see. Personally, I would go for season 5 and then watch it chronologically. That way it all makes sense. You can't really watch them separately if you want the whole story and motivations etc.
I hope that helps somewhat 🙂

Just curious, what's your favourite Spike stuff? I've never seen S7, but I watched the trailer on youtube and he's quite the sensitive, emotional man there 🙂 Not that it's bad, but I loved his character as a sarcastic, bad-ass and comic relief. Is he still like that in S7, but to a lesser extent?

Thanks, that's a big help and sums things up nicely 🙂

I actually did some googling, and it seems that they only have S1-S3 available for sale here 🙁 (I'm in Poland, and the show doesn't seem to be as much of a cult classic here as it is in the US and UK.) I'll check out a couple bookstores and see if they have a better selection. But if not, I guess S2 is the best option as far as Spike goes?

Yes, but check ebay and amazon's different sites. You might find something cheap.

Well, I liked him primarily in S7 because he stops being horrible to Buffy and treats her with respect, while at the same time retaining a lot of the core traits that made him a favorite character of mine. He's still witty and sarcastic and he's most definitely a bad-ass. I don't want to spoil any major plot points if you haven't seen it, but Spike absolutely rocks it in the final episode. And if you haven't seen it that's a plus.

With a few exceptions, I always found Spike entertaining, even as his story changed pretty radically. He was awesome in S2 as the secondary big bad, he was great as comic relief in S4 and his one appearance in S3. He was great when he was obsessed with Buffy in S5. Until the end he was very interesting in S6, even though that's by far his most complicated season. He shoes, in his own soulless way, that he loves Buffy while at the same time goes pretty dark as he twists and manipulates her. And he's awesome in S7 with his soul. He's also a huge part of why Angel S5 is so good.

I suggest season 6 as there is alot of Spike!! which is alot of good! plus you do see alot of different sides to spike. Season 7 you see more of who he really is (obviously because he has a soul and he becomes more sensitive). Season 5 you discover more about his character and how he defeated past slayers and how he became 'Spike'. And season 4 he cracks me up 🙂
So i think i would say season 6 if your a spike lover like myself.

p.s Hey dominika 🙂

I just saw S2 and it was awesome 🙂 I wish there had been more of Spike, but I'm also starting to like Willow/Oz and Angel more. It's been so long since I last watched the show that I'm basically seeing it for the first time. I don't remember anything about it from a decade ago, besides the general gist of it.

I bought S2, and now I'm thinking of either ordering a box set of all the seasons online, or just of S7. I can't really afford the former, but I might just justify the purchase by telling myself it's an early xmas gift 🙂 Thanks for the summaries, they're really helpful in seeing the big picture as far as the series goes.

Hey Jod 🙂 S6 sounds great. I did some digging around online (since they only have S1-S3 available in stores,) and my options are either to get all the seasons in a box set or S7... I'm afraid if I get the box set, I won't leave the house for a few weeks 😛

You know you can watch Buffy for free on Hulu.com, right?

If this isn't an option for you, and based on what you've said, I'd recommend purchasing 6 or 7.

Haha yay! 😀 season 4 was the first one I owned, and I was hooked. You would have ended up wanting them all anyway so good decision 😉

You don't mind spoilers do you? 😛 If not, then you can keep reading, haha.

I think Season 6 shows great development of Spike and his relationship with Buffy. At first it shows him being there through her depression, then their violent (but still passionate) relationship, and then Spike goes through a major character change in Seeing Red where he realizes he wants to change who he is for Buffy and then by the end of the season he goes to get his soul.

Season 5 is all about his crush on Buffy, and Season 7 is definitely the season where they have more of a "healthy" relationship, but Season 6 has all that good development that shows where Spike's character was and how he changed.

EDIT: Nevermind, I see you got Season 5, haha. 😛 Season 5 is truly a great season. Enjoy! 😀

Well... I got the box set, so I just started watching S5 but I own them all 🙂

I've skipped around a lot, and haven't watched every single episode, but I'm towards the end of S7 already and I have to say -- I love S6 the best!

S7 is nice, but there are downfalls - Spike rarely wears his leather trench 🙁 Also, it bothers me to see how badly Buffy still treats him, even when he has a soul. Especially how she just left him in the school basement when he was going all nuts, and just said, "I'll get back to you?" Seems a bit harsh for the man who once saved her sister's life and has fought alongside the whole gang that long.
