I think that if we're going to criticise other people's work here then it should be a damn sight more constructive than that...if you don't like fan fiction WW, don't read it.

You're welcome to your opinion, but without suggestions on improvement, critcism is merely self-indulgent hot air. Like Mr. P said, if you don't like fanfic, why are you in this forum?

I read the new posts list, and I saw the title, so I checked it out. No amount of criticism would save this piece. Why bother?

Sorry that the title made to story sound driftnet. But if you don't like it don't read it. If I don't like Stories I never finish reading them. Also when you criticizes people's work. No one really wants to listen to you. So please next time you don't like a fan fic don't criticizes them. It could hurt people a lot mainly if it's there first fic. I've had people say the before and it hurt. I trust you guys not to hurt me by criticizing every thing I do.

I think this person is better served by knowing they can't write. Now this person knows to try and apply their talents in another field.

Well if 'no amount of criticism' would save it, why bother posting?

If someone wants to post their work they can, regardless of how good others think it is.

I think there are MUCH nicer ways to critique a piece of writing without making digs at the author's capabilities. We're all of different age levels and writing skills on this board, but I think all fanfics should be able to be posted without having to worry about receiving rudely put negative feedback.

If that's what you meant. Why didn't you just say that? "You're not the best writer. Why don't you try and apply your talents in another field. Such as--------" I would rather someone to say this to me then. "This was awful, a prime example of why fan fiction should be wiped from reality."

I'm glad you have such a great job at that major publishing house, WW. Careful, though, you might end up like the guy at MGM...you know the guy who, when assessing Fred Astaire's talent wrote, "Can't sing. Can't act. Can dance a little."

Cool Wes. Good for you, but now it's guts time.

Can you offer an edition number and title to check out. I promise an honest and unbiased evaluation, but seeing as your such a big fan of critique that doesn't pull punches, expect that too. 🙂

Sure. Pick up issue 155 or 156. 156 is the most recent issue. 155 is also called "Wizard X", don't get confused. The next issue, 157, also has some stuff I've written. Enjoy! Additonally, the website has some interviews I've conducted archived. Check the news archive feature and then "Five Questions", it's a drop down menu. I interviewed Rob Liefeld, Mark Waid and Brad Meltzer. Cheers!

Last night I watched Matthew Broderick on the Conan O Brian show. He was talking about his new movie.

Apparently it's based on a true story. It concerns an FBI sting operation where they were trying to catch some mobsters involved with the teamsters. They set up a sting operation by hiring some wannabe movie producers to create a movie. The thing is they don't tell the producers it's just a sting. The producers proceed as if they are creating art.

I listened to that plot described, and thought to myself, "that so reminds me of comic book fanzines.

The industry with which fanzine kids work to create something of no noticeable merit is embarrasing to watch for anyone not involved with the scam.

Exploited comic nerds desperate to connect to the talent, but lacking anything like a real gift themselves are encouraged to endulge their egos, by creating a sham that masquerades as professional critique.

You've got comic book fanboys following minor talents around salivating over the fact that their hero did a levis Ad on TV, then presenting themselves as professional journalists on fansites.

So this is what you do is it Wes? And this is what entitles you to puff yourself up, and present yourself as some kind of superior being whose word enforces worthlessness on an another's enjoyment of the word.

You know why fanfic is superior to fanzine writing? It's honest. It doesn't wrap itself up in some pretentious illusion of professionalism.

It's written for personal enjoyment, and the vague hope that such enjoyment might be shared with a small group of like-minded individuals.

It makes no pretense of being anything other than what it is - fun. No-one writing fanfic expects to win the Pullitzer prize, and no offence, but don't be expecting yours anytime soon either.

BTW, thanks Bud. I did enjoy.

i'm sorry, you must be confused about the difference between fanzines and internationally distributed publications. Wizard is read in over 20 countries, and US circulation alone is something like 300 K. It's the foremost publication on the comic industry and related fields like superhero films and cartoons. I dunno many fanzines that have interviewed Jude Law and Gwenyth Paltrow, do you? How about fanzines that have exclusive previews done for them by marvel and dc? Any fanzines that run 4 of the largest comic conventions each yeare? Just this past August, Wizard hosted Wizard World Chicago, a convention that Joss Whedon and Amber Benson attended. Now, are you really going to try and tell me that Wizard is just a fanzine, wrapping itself in falsely earned merit?
Additionally, I didn't come here to brag and prance around with my legitimate journalistic credits. I come her to talk about Buffy and Angel, not to become friends with you folks about talk about my personal life. You brought it up my implying that I have no writing ability. While I've already proven that I do, what does that matter? Do critics have to be better than those they review? Is Roger Ebert a finer actor than Ed Norton. Of course he isn't. Does that mean he shouldn't be allowed to weigh in on Norton's performance in his most recent movie? Try using logic before posting.

Ok I think this has gone far enough. If you guys want to take this to pm then thats fine with me. But this thread is for another members fanfic. People have opinions on it and regardless of how we all feel about it, its our own. You have each stated your side and I get the feeling that this could go on and on.

Fanfic is for pleasure, its not to earn any professional acclaim so lets just keep it at that and not suck the fun out of it. So any future posts should be related to the work posted.

As usual if either parties want to take this up with me they can do so via pm or email.

Calangel, you cleared up the little confusion from the begining there. I think it's a very original idea. I would love to see you take the idea and elaborate. Give it more body. I really liked it and I look forward to seeing more work from you. Don't listen to those that have nothing better to do than tear others down with their smug and witless remarks.

Watcher Wes, here's a little helpful pointer for you...pull your lip over your head and swallow.

HEAR HEAR....

Though, WW was right to have his own opinion, and I'm not saying it's right or wrong, it was a bit harsh.
Everyone has a right to say what's on thier mind, and ...erm...
no one probably finished reading this, so why the hell continue? Oh well...good work Calangle. Though still, Gunn should've died. :bounce: lol

Ok does no one read my posts anymore??

I understand that you are unhappy with WatcherWes's comments, I too thought it was too harsh but this has already been addressed.

As I said above (which it seems has been ignored) this thread either goes back to discussing the fic itself or I close it and leave it here for people to read. I hate to do this but if I have to I will.

Sorry there, Faith. : pout2: Just can't help getting my opinion in on things....:banghead:
