As I’ve rewatched Buffy for like, the millionth time, I have been going through the episode trivia sections on IMDB. I knew that Amber Benson had asked not to come back after Tara was killed off, but now I’ve read in a few different places that Emma Caulfield had also asked not to come back and that was why Anya was killed off.

It made me go back and reread news articles and interviews with people like Charisma Carpenter and Michelle Trachtenberg where they spoke out about the toxic work environment on BTVS because of mistreatment from Joss Whedon and it has me wondering if Amber and Emma asked not to come back because their experience on the show was so horrible due to Joss.

MAN. I wish somebody would write a tell-all book. I want to know the tea!!!

I mean... considering they killed her off in the series finale there would be little reason for her to come back as there was nothing to come back to.

They brought back Andrew twice in the final season of Angel and at the time Buffy was ending there were other potential spinoffs that were a possibility, in addition to potential future seasons of Angel. She probably wanted to make sure her character was dead in case the franchise had a long life after the fact with Angel and other shows.

I have a hard time seeing how Anya would work on Angel or a spinoff.

Did you think Andrew would be used in the way he ended up being used on Angel?

And if there were, for example, a spinoff based on Faith or Giles or Spike (those are the only 3 characters I would consider interesting enough for a spinoff) there'd definitely be some familiar characters going with them. Did you expect, story-wise, that Cordelia and Wesley of all characters would become Angel's Scooby Gang? Or that Oz would be the first side character to cross over in-season?

I have no idea if the speculation about Caulfield wanting to be killed is true or not, but I can see the potential reasoning if she simply didn't want to answer questions about Anya as she moved forward with her career.

Amber made it clear in the book "Into Every Generation a Slayer Is Born: How Buffy Staked Our Hearts" that while the official reason for her not returning in season 7 (CwDP) was scheduling, she'd had enough bad experiences that she wasn't going to come back.
 
I never thought about that. I just figured they were like 'we won't use any of them again, so we might as well throw some deaths in there'.
 
It is hard to know just what Emma genuinely thought. Prior to season seven starting, she said in an interview (Starburst?) that she would not be back in an eighth season - the creators had not realised just how badly they had damaged the franchise at that point - but she hoped Anya would not die. In an interview in Buffy magazine afterwards, she said she was happy with Anya's death, but later said it was lame, so I don't know if she really was happy or just saying that not to get a reputation for being "difficult". It seems clear that, at the very least, she, Sarah and Amber were really unhappy with S6. I have read she volunteered Anya to die, but not from her; either S7 made her even more unhappy than S6, going by her interview prior to it starting, or it itsn't true.

I just bought my copy and will be starting it tonight!! Can't wait to read it.

Adding this to my Amazon list
One of the successor series was “Slayer School,” which probably became Astonishing X-Men, I could see Anya serving as some kind of Demonology Instructor.

Although, Anya being more like Emma Frost, I could see it. Like at some point, she has to become less autistic.

James Marsters fell out with the Producer Kelly Manners on Angel Season 5 and was going to hand his notice in but they then got the cancellation news

The Sequel or Spinoff or "Guest Appearance" is what Caufield was worried about. When she left, she did not want to be badgered (like Amber Benson was) to come back.
 
I learning tea from behind the scenes too!

I can't remember where I heard this, it may have been on a commentary, but I know that Katie Holmes and Selma Blair were in the running to play Buffy. Katie was offered the role. but turned it down so she could finish high school. Selma auditoned but didn't get it, but she was later cast alongside Sarah in Cruel Intentions, and the two are still close friends to this day.
