I'm sitting here in the dark, just me and the ol' IBM Thinkpad, and I really feel the need to be in touch with somebody. In about 7 hours, I will be going into surgery to have a small (Thank God!!!) cancer on my prostate dealt with. I say "dealt with," because it won't be removed, the prostate will just be trimmed on order to alleviate the discomfort associated with the condition. Prostate cancer is an extremely slow growing cancer, and, at my age, it may never develop enough to need anything else done to it in my lifetime, or some new, less radical treatment may be found. That was my decision, and I'm comfortable with it, or at least as comfortable with it as the word "cancer" allows one to be.
Anyhow, I said all that just to say this:
Those of you who believe in such things, I would be grateful if you would remember my family and me in your prayers for the next few days. It's not as much for me, you understand, as for my wife, who has had some bad experiences with cancer in her own family, and my sister. They seem to have gotten used to me being my usual sweet tempered self, and we have no real assurance that I won't sprout figurative claws and fangs during the next couple of weeks.
Also, I would be totally remiss in my duties as founder and director of Adopt-A-Bangel if I were to leave the organization without leadership, even for such a short time. Our mission is so vital and our task is so great. I am, therefore, formerly appointing Miss K to fill in as acting chairperson during this time, confident in the knowledge that she will be an inspiration to the other members and not let our progress falter.
In the words of that great statesman from California:

But I hope that I don't look like that when I return.
