Coming off seemingly endless 007 hype, Idris Elba might pivot into Stephen King territory: Deadline reports the actor is the latest front-runner to play the gun-slinging Roland Deschain in Sony and Nikolaj Arcel's first Dark Tower film adaptation. Nothing official has been confirmed, but the update comes after similar news of Matthew McConaughey thinking about a turn as the nefarious Man in Black. If deals follow through as forecast, Dark Tower would mark both actors' first times leading a major movie saga — one also set to have season-long TV installments. Although it's not the Bond role Elba fans have been lobbying for, Roland stands at the center of King's creative universe, a vast arena that signifies a similarly big deal. Not to mention badass.

Okay, Elba & McConaughey.. I would seriously fanboy out. That would be really good casting.

It has actually be confirmed now Elba as Roland and McConaughey as the man in black. Well.. since it looks like he's going to be tied up with this series of films that the Green Lantern thing is probably off the table.

But him as Roland.. wow.
 
Idris Elba could act the role of a despondent paper bag, blowing in the breeze, and I'd pay good money to see it. The man's a legend. This sounds amazing!
 
I loved him in Pacific Rim. I mean, it was an enjoyable movie. I love monsters. I love robots. I love monsters and robots fighting. But Idris Elba brought it all together!

Well that's just as well since he is the lead😉

I've never read this novel either, but I know it is considered one of King's best and the casting is really exciting. So I will be watching for sure🙂
 
So excited about this! After years of stuffing around its finally actually happening 🙂

I have seen that some asshats are whining about Idris Elba being black. Which is sadly not surprising. The only time the color of Roland's skin is any kind of "issue" is in the beginnings of his relationship with Susannah. So I suppose she wont be calling him a "Honky mutha f**ker" and other charming terms in the movie. But aside from that, he could be freaking purple for all it matters. Get over it.

I'm happy with Matthew Mcconaughey playing the man in black. I can't wait to see who will be playing Susannah, Eddie and Jake as well.

I'm also just so curious about how they are going to do this. The Dark Tower series is so damn big. The mythology is so tied to a number of King's other books. Sure people wont have trouble following the story I don't think, but its so much more enjoyable when you have read stuff like The Stand, Insomnia, Hearts in Atlantis etc.
 
Aaron Paul has reportedly been cast now too. People are speculating as Eddie.
 
Aside from that, if they do cast him then they ruined all hopes for the movie as far as I am concerned. As they are consolidating multiple books into the one movie.
 
Really? I'm actually quite happy with the idea. My only problem is that it could be considered typecasting. He would be playing another smart mouth junkie.
