Imagine that the Initiative had been set up and operating in Season2. Instead of having his soul restored, Angelus gets darted and has the chip planted in his head. There's no plot to destroy the world, and Spike and Drusilla leave Sunnydale, never to return, leaving a basically defanged Angelus to lurk the hellmouth.

How do you think that the series would have played out with those changes?

Angelus would be so pissed! lol. Hmm. He would take it different from Spike. As we saw in Passion he has other ways to mess with people. He's truly evil and I think he would just get a hoard of minions to do the killing for him. So maybe Acathla would still be a plan. Spike would laugh at him, Dru might take car of him the way she did Spike, so the only thing I think would change is Jenny would still be alive probably and then five him his soul back. It would be interesting.

If Angelus is chipped, that means he has been captured by The Initiative. Personally, I think he would rip the thing out of his own head before being tested on or just being left unable to hunt and kill. If he couldn't do that he would manipulate every single person or demon around him. He'd probably lead a riot from the cells. Point is, chip or not, Angelus is dangerous, often diabolically so.

I don't know if the story would just leave him there only to bring the story back again in S4, but if it did that would be very interesting. Especially if Jenny was still alive and had completed the spell.

I think all of this would have left Buffy worn down to her bones. With Angelus just taken off the street with no trace of for years, I think the worry of waiting for him to pop out at any time would have been quite difficult. I think we would have ended up with a Buffy a little bit closer to Wishverse!Buffy. Not fully gone, but definitely fraying around the edges. I think Faith's influence on her would have been much deeper because of this.

I think he'd get out of the Initiative no problem, probably by leading a manipulated riot like Kean said.

I'd say he'd act in a similar role to Spike for Adam, but he'd have played Adam while pretending to help him.
I think we'd see a similar storyline to the Acathla story, harming people directly wasn't involved in that plot, the goal was to send the whole world to hell, I think he'd just have done that found a way to, maybe involving Adams uranium power core?

I can't see him begging for help like Spike did from the scoobies. Maybe playing them by pretending the chip was more like a soul, the manipulation sounds right up his ally, but I think it would have been too much of a long con for Angelus.

I can certainly see Angelus manipulating Buffy that way. Saying that the chip 'has done something' to him way earlier. Telling Buffy that he has all these memories of their time together and that he dreams about being in love with her....

And I could see a 17 yr old Buffy falling for that line of BS (remember that Angelus is really good at playing the role of Angel when he wants.) and maybe deciding to trust him, preventing Xander and Giles from staking him (because you know they'd be itching to, chip or no chip.)

Angelus' danger always came from his playing mindgames and being sneaky rather than pure force like Spike, if he had worked with Adam I doubt the Scoobies would've gotten back together in time to stop the end of the world.

I think Faith's influence on her would have been much deeper because of this.

Somewhat off track, but I think that there would be a definite chance of at least a partial role reversal when, and if, Faith showed up in Sunnydale. No evidence one way or the other, but I've always just wondered. If Buffy hadn't been that heroic, would Faith have been more apt to not have gone dark. A lot of what she did, her reckless, almost irresponsible attitude was brought about, at least in part, by her admitted jealousy of Buffy, how from the time that she had been Called, everything was "Buffy, Buffy, Buffy..." I wonder if, without that influence, that constant reminder that she was always "the other Slayer," whereas Buffy was always "THE Slayer," Faith might not have been more apt to approach her calling more responsibly that what we saw in Season 3, might have actually accepted the blame for killing the Assistant Mayor, recognizing the fact that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time, and gotten on with her actual mission rather than going over to the Mayor's side.

For me, one of the main reasons Faith spirals is because there wasn't the place for her in Sunnydale that she wanted. She gravitated towards the mayor because he gave her the time and attention she desired. Without Angel in her life, I think Buffy would have had that time for Faith. I don't think Faith would have went to the mayor but I also don't think the situation would have been without trouble. I imagine Buffy and Faith being like their "Bad Girls" selves much earlier and for much longer than they were. That would have been destructive in a whole new way, with different disasters to try to overcome.

Structurally I'm not really sure how this would have worked at the end of S2, but disregarding that I could see Angelus easily outwitting The Initiative and escaping. I like what @black eyed guy said about the long con, I could for sure see that as a full-season arc. Angelus returns and slowly "grows" before ultimately revealing that he'd been screwing with Buffy and everyone all along. Trouble with that though is that is basically finishes the Angel character in a very, very dark way. That's a long time without Angel (the real Angel), which kind of kills Bangel in the long run and everything that happens on AtS. With that in mind, I wouldn't like to have seen it.

Speaking purely from an in-story perspective? I consider Angelus to be one of the smartest and most devious characters we meet in the Buffyverse, and have no trouble believing that he would have manipulated his way right out of The Initiative.

What was it that Faith said in Season 7 about "Little Miss Tight Wound getting her naughty on"? There's a world of unexplored possibilities there.

There are two examples of vampires manipulating people in the story - one is Angelus regarding Buffy's one-night stand with her as fun and he said he thought she was a pro and the other was The Yoko Factor where Spike tries to sow discord among the scoobies. The tactic Angelus used only works against someone who loves him. The devious tactics in The Yoko Factor work a bit more universally.

The best move for Angelus would be to convince the initiative that he is not a threat, but they rely on temperature measurements, so they would know he is dead and therefore a vampire. He would have gone along with Adam in a heartbeat, so he definitely would have been up to no good there. I could see him using the same escape plan Spike used and being more dangerous when he got out.

There was also the time Angelus got all the Fang Gang to go at each others throats while inside a locked cage. ('Soulless' and 'Cavalry' I believe.)

Made Spike look like an amateur by comparison.
