If Angelus had killed....

Well I don't think a loss of Cordy at that point would have had a particularly powerful emotional impact on either fans or Scoobies.
She got friendly with the Scoobies during the season, but she was hardly close to them, and I don't think her death would have shell-shocked them in the same sense as having Jenny being taken (if only for the shock of Giles' grief, reaction and change afterward). I think Giles' pain got to Buffy more than anything. He was her support system and his life was irreparably damaged by Angelus' actions, something she felt a good deal guilty for.
Cordy dying wouldn't have had the same effect on either of them even though they would surely have grieved and felt a similar desire for vengeance.
As for an overall effect on the series I think Cordy's death (had it come in s2) would have made a small ripple that would have been somewhat forgotten with the seasons to come. She would no doubt have been replaced by some similar character and the show would have moved on.
That said I think Ats would have suffered considerably much more than Btvs had Cordy disappeared so soon. (Ats without Cordy is hard to imagine... Perhaps they could have created some similar character but I don't believe it would've have been the same without her )

GASP! This makes me really sad just thinking about it. I wouldn't have been sad at the time, but now thinking back on it, I couldn't see the shows the same way without Cordeila. Especially Angel...I mean, I wouldn't have watched Angel if it hadn't been for Cordy.

Well, since Cander was hot and heavy at the time, I think the retribution would have been (or attempted to be anyway) pretty heavy from Xander's end and directed at Buffy's inability to kill Angel. He never specifically blames Buffy but his relationship with her would have changed completely and permanently. And for that matter, so would his relationship with Willow. I would imagine she would attempt to comfort him and a more direct Oz/Willow/Xander triangle could have been berthed. Not to mention Cordelia's humanizing effect on AtS, and the camaraderie they build as a result.
I don't think Buffy herself would have been nearly as driven to kill Angelus as she was after Jenny's death if Cordelia were gone instead. Emotionally speaking the tie wasn't there at that point, not to the extent that it was by even the end of season 2 and beginning of 3. In short, it would have changed a lot, about G/J canon, the Scoobies relationship, and later on, Angel himself.

I often wonder how the series would have changed if Oz had been killed as originally intended. And while Oz was cool, and I loved him and Willow, I prefer W/T and since Oz was only on the show another year and half, I kinda wished Angelus had killed him instead of Jenny (Woah, it sounds weird to be saying "I wish someone killed someone" lol)
I think it would've given Buffy the walk up call to kill Angel, and a lot to work with in Buffy and Willow's relationship. But I think it would've worked because I think overall Willow would have been able to forgive Buffy more so than Xander would have if it had been Cordy. Pretty much what [MENTION=9799]Taake[/MENTION] said. Cordelia at that point hadn't developed into the awesome character she is in AtS. Jenny definitely got a more emotional response from the viewers. I think killing Jenny was better for the story and Cordelia's character

I think it would have been pretty shocking simply because she was one of the regulars and it would have made them all think "It could have been any one of us." It also would have made the fans think "No one is safe!" and shook up the fan community a lot more than killing off Jenny Calendar, but I don't think the emotional ties to the scene would have went as deep.

Agreed. While Jenny wasn't as established as a main character the way Cordelia was, Jenny's death had an emotional impact that just would not have been able to have been achieved with killing Cordelia.

Yeah, I wasn't a fan of Jenny Calender, but I won't lie, when Angelus snapped her neck I teared up a bit.
Cordelia, great lines, but I never truly liked her either, so I don't think I would have minded either way, but it may have affected the series in a big way, especially Angel.
Actually, I read somewhere that Oz was supposed to die by Angelus, but seeing the characters potential kept him on for another season and a half 🙂

I think one of the main reasons that Jenny's death was so tragic on the show is because of her relationship with Giles. She was the only friend Giles had, I mean aside from the scoobies. Cordy's death wouldn't have affected Giles as much as Jenny's death did. Plus Cordelia's death was much more dramatic in Angel.
