Yes, Angel is the father. How do you think this situation would've turned out? (Assuming that the shows were still doing crossovers)

How would both shows change if Buffy had been impregnated instead of Darla? Personally, I really love the idea. (And no, it WOULDN'T be like Twilight, so don't even go there lol)

Thoughts?

Buffy and Angel would have had sex, resulting in the return of Angelus. Then either Buffy would have had to dust him, he would have had to kill her, or there would have somehow been some way of restoring Angel's soul.

Assuming that Buffy were turned, then it were to be discovered that she was pregnant, pretty much the same thing that happened with Darla, where Connor's soul influenced his mother, would have happened to Buffy, but Willow and Giles would have found a way to restore her own soul and possibly her humanity along with it. (Angel would, of course be totally oblivious of all of that, because he would be back in Los Angeles helping the helpless) The Watchers' Council would take the baby, either with or without Buffy's permission, resulting in a Buffy/Giles feud similar to the actual Angel/Wes one) some twist of fate would have caused him to age 15 years in 3 months, and Connor would have shown up in Sunnydale, immediately had an affair with Dawn, and she would become pregnant with what would become Jasmine, and that whole story line would have played out in Sunnydale rather than Los Angeles, with Angel and his team just as oblivious, or at least unconcerned, as Buffy and the Scoobies were in Joss' original story line.

Once Jasmine was defeated, Dawn would take the nearly insane Connor, using her powers as the key, to the reality without shrimp, and neither one would ever be heard from again.

And no, it WOULDN'T be like Twilight,

I am sorry, this isn't the topic but i've always wondered why people compare Buffy to Twillight. It really not the same thing. Bella isn't a lead female character as Buffy, and Angel doesn't shine in the sun as Edward ^^

A lot of people do. I don't, and I wanted to nip that topic in the bud.

If it was a mystical pregnancy, then it would have been lame. Mystical pregnancies are almost always lame. And it would HAVE to be a mystical pregnancy, because vampires can't have children.

It's the hair:

But seriously - there's lots of similarities between Buffy and Twilight. Human girl falls in love with a creepy handsome vampire, teen angst ensues, fantasy elements in a modern setting, lots of "I shouldn't love you but I do", etc... Buffy did it much better, but it's still similiar.

Ha ha Both are beautiful hair :)
It's interesting, sure.... but I can't see how Buffy (the show) could have continued with a pregnant Buffy. So whilst the actual plot would be interesting (and akin to Nikki Wood's story perhaps), I can't see the TV execs agreeing that a pregnant young woman should be kicking butt on a prime time TV show.

And then, there's the small matter of the actual child - what does the show do with the child of a slayer & a vampire? Have the scoobies take turns with nappy changes and naptime?

I think had the show gone in this direction, the phrase "jumping the shark" would have been used. Angel (the show) could cope with the concept, but barely.

I think it could have survived with a pregnant Buffy long before it could survive with a pregnant Gellar. But yeah, a preggo Buffy would seem like an attempt at a ratings grab while a preggo Gellar I am pretty sure would lead to it's cancellation.

Like Dawn and Connor weren't ratings grabs...?
I don't think Buffy would actually keep the baby, in the comics
when she found out she was pregnant she chose abortion over bringing the baby into the world (of course she wasn't actually pregnant).
"The mission is what matters" and all that slayer stuff about never having a normal life. And this was in a world were there was slayers everywhere not just the one (or two depending on if Faiths circumstances).
But then again even though BTVS tried very hard to push the important topics and have gay and interracial couples on the show. Would an abortion back in the early 2000s have been acceptable considering it took ages for Tara and Willow to even be allowed to kiss?

Not necessarily. Assuming that Joss didn't get as put out with Sarah as he was with Charisma, they could have used camera angels, loose clothing, and stunt doubles to hide the pregnancy. In an extreme case, they could have had Buffy injured so badly that she would have to be bedridden and bring someone, probably Faith, in to fill in for her for a few episodes. It's been done more than once under the same circumstances on other shows and even movies, Scarlet Johansson in "Avengers: Age Of Ultron" being one example. I'm not saying that they could have continued shooting up until the day of delivery, but Sarah being pregnant while making the show wouldn't have to mean cancellation.

I thought that but at the same time, she was the action hero of the show. The show, and ratings, were so dependant on her carrying the action. As close as the show was to cancellation on so many occasions I think SMG 'out-of-action' would be a hard pitch to the network. ScarJo had the luxury of being worked around because she was, what, the 5th fiddle? Charisma as never 'action girl' like SMG. Heck, I think Hannigan could have been pregnant and I think it still could have worked; just don't see them being able to work around a pregnant SMG.

A Buffy pregnancy could've worked if the child turned out to be Dawn which would've led into season 5. Parker could've been the father and wanted nothing to do with the child. Buffy would've ummed and arred over whether to keep the baby or not given the fact that she's a slayer which could lead to Giles telling her about Nikki Wood (which would set up Robin for season 7). Buffy would ultimately decide to keep the child who she calls Dawn. In season 5, Buffy could be struggling with motherhood but is glad Joyce is there to help then Joyce dies. Buffy finds out Dawn has been made a key by the monks (because they value the tenacity of a protective mother). Buffy jumps and dies to protect her daughter. When Buffy comes back, her attitude to Dawn is similar to post-natal depression, she just feels numb even though she knows she should feel great love and affection for her child, however all she sees is the reason why she died. Eventually Buffy gets better and adjusts to motherhood whilst the other scoobies help out on babysitting duty.

That's brilliant. I really like the idea of Dawn being Buffy's child.

Plus Buffy isn't a normal human girl like Bella is but is the slayer. According to season seven, the slayer not only has superhuman strength and abilities but also has the essence of a demon inside of her. So technically Buffy and Angel are both part human and part demon since Angel has his soul and vampires are a hybrid of demons and humans lol. I think they get compared because Twilight was all over the place when it came out and if you hadn't grown up in the nineties you were more likely to not have heard of Buffy before so when you tell them about it they assume that its like Twilight and not the other way around and the same thing when vampire diaries came out though I've heard that the novels came before Buffy. I think the human loving a vampire thing is very common in vampire fiction. Buffy is the most unique of them though because she isn't a normal human girl and she doesn't need the vampire to protect her. It's more interesting because as the slayer she should be slaying him since he is a vampire and he should want to kill her since she is the slayer but him having a soul allows for them to develop a relationship. They both walk in two different worlds and feel isolated because of it.

It would have been one of the worse creative choices in history. It would have hindered the lead of her show too much, and would just be cheap and add nothing of value. They've done a good job selling that Buffy can't have a regular life while she is the Slayer. Doesn't make sense that she would suddenly become pregnant anyway.

I disagree. I think it could work on many levels. Firstly you've got Buffy dealing with the consequence of unprotected sex, then you have her trying to juggle her job with motherhood (during which you could show her struggling) then she would adapt to motherhood more easily and find the right balance (important to show that motherhood isn't an easy walk in the park but that it can also be rewarding, rather than a you're either good at it or you're not). You can also have Joyce, the scoobies etc looking after the baby when Buffy is required to slay (showing the benefits of a good support network) plus also explains why the baby is offscreen and other character absences when not required eg Joyce and Dawn are out of town visiting relatives which enables Buffy and the scoobies to have very important meetings etc.

But the things you mentioned would just add to the soapy aspects which people complained about in the letter seasons. Also, I hate that the female experience has to be concerned with them getting pregnant in films and TV. Darla getting pregnant was more interesting because of her history with Angel and because she was a supporting character and a villain. For Buffy it would defeat the message of the show, wouldn't be as interesting, and wouldn't make sense anyway. She already has Dawn to look after, is the Slayer, and hardly wants a kid in her early 20s.

I disagree. Why can't Buffy be kickass AND a mother? So long as every female on the show wasn't getting pregnant, I see no reason why Buffy couldn't be. It would bring up Nikki Wood and Robin which would give some set up to season 7.

Just imagine this scenario. After the events of "I Will Remember You," Buffy returns home after her visit to Angel and discovers that she is mysteriously pregnant, with no idea how or when it could have happened. (Granted, when the Powers erased that day, it would have probably eliminated all chance of such a possibility, but let's forget that for the sake of argument) Now THAT could have been an interesting story arc, especially if Angel never found out about it until well after the fact, and decided as he so often does, that "the greater good" would be served by his not clearing up the mystery.

Just imagine all the opportunities for plot twists and turns that sort of story line might present.

I think what he means is that not all women become mothers, yet it's such a common recurring storyline trope for any female character on TV.

I do think it would be pretty stupid tbh, from a TV pov rather than the mythology. In fact, I'd probably have stopped watching it for jumping the shark.

That is pretty much spot on. Thanks for putting it better than I could.
