If Buffy Had Come Back Wrong

Since you stated this is hypothetical I won't bother going into that not being how Buffy would have come back wrong if she had.

Looking at your scenario as purely an AR that quite serious condition wouldn't--no couldn't go unnoticed. We've seen what a soulless being is in this franchise; cold, unfeeling and vicious, even malicious. She'd essentially have come back as something resembling what Faith was in season three after stabbing the Mayor's assistant except much darker and more void; her version of Angelus.

So there is no doubt she would have taken human lives. The Scoobies probably would have been forced to kill her at the end of the season. Honestly the concept is appealing, far more so than what that whole season was, incorporating her character back into the show in a nearly flawless sense like her death never happened and Willow needed such a backfire to set her ass straight about tampering with nature.

This would be true in a worse case scenario, but has there ever been a more friendly, charming character in the entire Buffyverse than Mayor Wilkins? He was everybody's favorite uncle, and even, in her own words, "like a dad" to Faith. Yes, he COULD be cold, calculating, even cruel, but he was also popular enough outwardly that he continued to be reelected Mayor of Sunnydale regularly, and he stated at least once that he had gotten rid of his soul long ago.

My point is, unless anyone actually saw Wilkins, or Buffy, doing anything so terribly wrong, if either one wanted to hide their soulless condition, it could be done. With a little discretion, she could kill, steal, or be the biggest slut in Sunnydale, and still manage, at least for a period of time, to fool even her closest friends. Remember how Faith fooled all of the Scoobies, Riley, Spike, and even Buffy's own mother, for awhile after the body swap, and Faith made little or no real effort to actually act the way that Buffy did. At the most, they all thought that Buffy was acting strangely. It took Tara, someone who didn't know her, who could be more objective, to see that something was actually wrong.
 
Mayor Wilkins had sold his soul a bout a hundred years previously- maybe he just got better at hiding his true nature?
He's basically the classic sociopath in that he's entirely selfish to the point of homicide...Although the only blip there is Faith- he seemed to genuinly care for her after a relatively short period of time- so he was capable of emotion/affection.

In that case was Mayor Wilkins truly souless, or had he just promised his soul to some demonic patron in the future?

I think there are countless ways a person could come back wrong. They could be physically perfect but have something wrong with their mind, or vice versa, and to many different degrees. I love that we don't actually see Joyce in that episode, it's entirely up to our imagination what she comes back like. It works perfectly.
 
I really don't see how Buffy could NOT come back wrong. Everything anyone on the show has ever said about bringing people back from the dead is, "They come back wrong."

That's a completely different case, Wilkins sold his soul

Mayor Wilkins sold his soul which allowed him complete control over his situation; when Buffy was resurrected from the grave she didn't initially remember who she was let alone that she was missing her soul thus the condition probably would have shown itself quite transparently at least in that period and the Scoobies did find her before she regained her memory.

The body swap is an interesting point and it annoyed me how no one saw through Faith's poor or rather complete lack of acting. Again a controlled situation in which those involved still knew who they were.

By the way, returning to the Mayor, Faith may have been charmed by him but she knew he was bad news, by then he was public Scooby enemy #1 but she was not only sociopathic by then he'd fulfilled her deepest desire, a loving father who spoils her. So it's not that he fooled her, he just made the dark side look more appealing. Especially after the Scoodies had ganged up on her over the murder she committed. I could go into a whole other paragraph about how she brought that on herself so I'm aware of that but I'm currently going by the way she saw it. In the end the Mayor was more accepting of her.
