would Giles and Wood have tried to kill her behind Buffy's back? Willow has the power to be dangerous, and if triggered would have no control over her power. Take Spike out of the picture to lessen the knee jerk response - what would they have done about Willow?

fun idea
If Willow loses control over her power then everybody dies and the world ends. As seen in the finale of season six the only thing that can stop Willow is Willow. If the first can take control over her, it does not need to bother with ubervamps, hellmouth and boring speeches anymore.

If it was Willow who had the trigger from the first would Giles and Wood have tried to kill her behind Buffy's back?

No because they would have been dead already. Suddenly Willow's eyes and hair turn black and this is it. They die in a matter of seconds.

They wouldn't have tried, and they wouldn't have even suggested it. Robin Wood wanted to kill Spike primarily out of revenge for his mother. If he cared at all about the safety of the Potentials, it was only secondary. As for Giles, he objected to Buffy's relationship with Spike in Season 7 because he "wanted so much more for her." That might not have been his primary reason for going behind Buffy's back, but I have little doubt that it definitely contributed his ultimate decision.

Willow had neither killed Wood's mother, nor was her relationship with Buffy anything that Giles found distasteful. Without those two factors as influence, Willow would have never been in any danger.

This sums it up well I think.
Wood's thing with Spike was personal, so I don't think he would have.

Giles on the other hand has a very grey moral compass, so I think if he thought Willow was a genuine danger then he would have taken her out, but the point remains that, as others have stated, no one could take Willow out unless she herself wanted to be taken out, as made evident by The First's attempt in CWDP

I think it's too different a scenario. Giles didn't have a personal relationship clouding his judgement like Buffy did to Spike, but he did have a personal relationship with Willow.
So I dont think he'd try to kill her, but I also dont think he'd let her stay there.

He'd send her to the coven, or bind her in her own power again, he wouldn't be stupid enough (like Buffy was) to let her walk around knowing she could go evil at any time. If they couldn't break into her emotion by trojan horsing her with good magic like he did in season 6, cuz she was triggered, they wouldn't stand a chance, he'd know that and he wouldn't be as reckless as Buffy was about it.

I think we'd have seen a similar story where Buffy wants to keep Willow, cuz she is actually the best weapon they have and behind her back Giles tries to bind her or recruits the coven to kidnap her - actually I kinda wish that was the story, it would have been much more relevant to centre that story around Willow as she was in the same position but she actually mattered to the overall story, and it would have been a much better reason for Giles and Buffy to fall out. Would have been actual drama, rather than needless melodrama.

I think it was Giles' re;ationship with Spike that was clouding his eyes - he had barely even met souled Spike. But that's neither here nor there.

So you believe that Giles would have sent her away - which he could do, or bound her powers which I doubt he could do. But as it happened she was necesary to the battle.

I agree that would have been a kick-ass season - you're right, a lot to play with there. And Buffy and Angel as well as Buffy and Spike did tend toward melodrama. I think that's why I like Spangel - more snark, more history and fewer tears.

They absolutely 100% would not have, unfortunately. No one touches Willow lol

But why not? And this is said with much Willow love!

But the First did get into her once - and she did go black eyed and no one died. I'm assuming the trigger would be aimed toward certain people - more or less like Spike was - but I agree that Willow is more powerful on the order of nuclear bomb vs prolific sociopath.

However, Willow has far more reason to trust than Spike did - she would vbe far easier to betray.

I ave to say I agree - lacking the personal vendetta there would be no reason to go for Willow. Other methods would be tried - restrictions might be effective if Willow agrees to them.

It all comes back to 'what the heck was the first trying to accomplish' in the first place? Why did it chose Spike and what was it planning to do with him and why not trigger him once he was with Buffy? Was triggering Willow instead even an option? If so then why not trigger Willow and use her to take over the world? There are so many questions about the first and how season 7 could have been different. What we get is few or vague answers and explanations, if any.

Using Willow as the trigger would have been better for me because I care more about Willow as a person rather than the newly souled Spike. Plus I don't care for Spuffy, I would have preferred more Buffy and Willow relationship development especially after what happened in season 6. As for Giles, I think he would have tried to remove Willow from the situation while trying to find a way to save her. Wood would have no reason to try to kill her, because he was motivated by revenge to kill Spike. He just used the trigger as an excuse to do it.

Well that's kind if incorrect. Buffy was trusting the fact that he has a soul to stop him, she didn't seen to comprehend that once triggered that's irrelevant. Spike wasn't in control.
The only one clouded was Buffy.

Well he bound her in season 6 and she only got out cuz Anya let her out.

I don't think so. If the first had a power to trigger people it would have done it more, Spike had Mommy issues so it was able to exploit that. The reason it triggered Spike was cuz he was the weak link in the fence.
