If Nathan Fillion Had Played Angel...

In all fairness to Nathan, the Angel that he would have created over 8 years in the role would have certainly been different than the one that David played, but if he had had those 8 years, this thread would almost certainly have been about how David is too serious and introverted to have played the part properly. Personally, I think that Nathan would have made an excellent, if no doubt different, Angel, and, while I do agree that the dynamic between him and Sarah would have been different, both are skillful enough actors to have pulled it off wonderfully.

Plus, Bangel would have been a much more fun and less tragic a relationship. Nathan might have actually managed to coax a little more laughter and less tears out of Sarah.

True. But Bangel would not have had the same emotional impact that drew me to it in the first place and Bangel hasn't been all tears from Sarah the fun and the laughter has been there you just have to look for it.:biggrin3:

So... much... to... consider... oh, the change! Ow! It hurts! Must... stop... thinking about... two sexy men... at the same... time!

My problem is (and this goes for all characters not just Angel) i am used to watching the shows with the characters played by who they are played by so i have difficulty actually thinking about what other people playing the characters would be like. Same goes for Nathan Fillion playing Angel, i know him as Caleb and David as Angel so cannot pictures them playing different roles on Buffy or Angel.

I think they are both extremely talented actors and they both are great in the roles they have on their respected shows. I think saying that Nathan would have brought a different side to Angel is wrong though. We know from DB playing Booth in Bones that he can be light hearted and funny. Joss must have wanted Angel to be brooding regardless of who played him, so even though Nathan is funny I think he still would have played Angel the same way.

You say that as if David's the reason why their relationshop was so angsty...it's just the way it was written. It would have been angst ridden regardless, because that's the way it was intended to be. Also, David is a funny guy. Angel can be pretty hilarious at times, in my opinion. I personally found him pretty irritating on Buffy (although he did have his funny moments) but I like him so much more on Angel because there isn't the constant brooding and angst...ugh.

Maybe because to me Angel is such an iconic role, but I just can't see anyone but David Boreanaz playing him. And Nathon Fillion, while I like him a lot, he doesn't seem to fit the character. I mean, Angel's funny, yeah, but he's not really "haha" funny. His humor is more situational. He's not really witty (well, at least not until S5).

I mean, seeing Nathan Fillion as Angel with Buffy in S1-3, well, I just can't see it. Boreanaz was perfect for that role, just like I have a hard time picturing someone else playing Buffy. He matured as an actor as the character matured and evolved.

I have a much easier time picture Fillion as Spike than as Angel. Fillion doesnt pull off the dark Brooding type very well and thats Angels MO. Spike on the other hand with his sarcastic remarks and devil may care attitude I feel fits Fillion more. I think David has more flexibility as an actor. Fillions roles as Caleb, Mal, and Castle all have the general funny guy feel too them although they have their serious moments. I love the guy but he definitely has been type cast. Maybe Fillion could have filled in a little more of the post BtVS Angel who was a little more laid back and funny. He definitely was more in his element a leading man.
